People post variations on the same theme again and again, almost as though they are trying to reaffirm their normalcy by locating their photos squarely in the realm of the average. This is particularly true for snapshots of China life, with the same (admittedly sometimes striking) images occurring repeatedly, reinforcing a narrow view of the country and its peculiarities. For those of us who have lived a while in Zhongguo, it’s become automatic to distinguish between what is truly unusual and what is merely the same old dross with a new filter slapped on top. But for people abroad or those who are new arrivals, it’s easy to develop tunnel vision, seeing only a fraction of the cultural uniqueness that is on display In Guangzhou, a bottle daily.
