Lotz, Chair Professor Susan J. Douglas Professor Regina Morantz-Sanchez Associate Professor Bambi L. Haggins, Arizona State University © Jennifer M. Fogel 2012 ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I owe my deepest gratitude to the members of my dissertation committee – Dr. Susan J. Douglas, Dr. Bambi L. Haggins, and Dr. Regina Morantz-Sanchez, who each contributed their time, expertise, encouragement, and comments throughout this entire process. These women who have mentored and guided me for a number of years have my utmost respect for the work they continue to contribute to our field. I owe my deepest gratitude to my advisor Dr. Amanda D. Lotz, who patiently refused to accept anything but my best work, motivated me to be a better teacher and academic, praised my successes, and will forever remain a friend and mentor. Without her constructive criticism, brainstorming sessions, and matching appreciation for good television, I would have been lost to the wolves of academia. One does not make a journey like this alone, and it would be remiss of me not to express my humble thanks to my parents and sister, without whom seven long and lonely years would not have passed by so quickly. They were both my inspiration and staunchest supporters. Without their tireless encouragement, laughter, and nurturing this dissertation would not have been possible.

ABSTRACT This qualitative analysis examines audience engagement with fictional portrayals of mother-daughter relationships in prime-time television of the 21st century. I used in- depth interviews with women of different backgrounds to explore how real mothers and daughters interpret portrayals of mother-daughter relationships on television; how they make sense of their own mother-daughter relationships through their engagement with these portrayals; and how and to what extent their engagement with these portrayals influences their own lives and mother-daughter relationships. The results of this study uncovered a process of audience engagement with mother-daughter relationships on television that involved the viewing experience, interpretation, sensemaking, and perceived effects on the participants' real lives and relationships.

“WITH PAIN THERE IS HOPE”: REPRESENTATIONS OF WORKING MOTHERS ON ABC’S BROTHERS & SISTERS by MEGAN VOGEL (Under the Direction of Peggy J. Kreshel) ABSTRACT The national conversation about working mothers and their place in society has been long, intense, and fraught with contradiction. These women are caught between the cultural ideal of nurturing domesticity on one hand, and economic reality and personal ambition on the other. Grounded in British cultural studies and feminist theory, this thesis explores this tension by examining the representations of working mothers on ABC’s Brothers & Sisters, a popular television drama. The findings suggest that these representations are messy and at times, contradictory, and that they both challenge and uphold traditional gender roles. The study’s findings are placed within contemporary social and cultural discourses to suggest the ways that the fictional characters are used to humanize the confusing position many women find themselves in today. Limitations and opportunities for future research are also discussed. • Calista Flochart Plastic Surgery Before and After
Calista Flochart Plastic Surgery Before and After www.celebritysizes.com Early Life and Success as a Television Actress 50-year-old Calista Flockhart has started her acting career in the late 1980s and despite her decades of tenure in the industry, there’s no doubt that she still looks amazing. It would seem that her relationship with actor Harrison Ford is not the only long-lasting aspect in her life, it’s her seemingly youthful appearance, too. Born on November 11, 1964 in Freeport, Illinois, she was interested in performing arts even as a young child that she even wrote a play herself and starred in it at a dinner party. Growing up, her passion for acting remained. Thus, after graduating from high school in 1983, she opted to attend Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University in New Jersey. It was also in the university that her talent for acting was further noticed. She later graduated with a degree in Theater in 1988. The following year, she decided to leave for New York City where she started attending auditions for film and television roles. Prior to finding a regular gig as an actress, she worked as a waitress and an aerobics instructor. Her television debut was in a 1989 episode of the soap opera Guiding Light. After a few more years, she landed a guest appearance in Lifestories: Families in Crisis in 1992. In the neXt few years, she mostly worked onstage. Then, in 1997, after being asked to audition for the lead role on the television series Ally McBeal, which she later won, Flockhart began playing the role that same year, earning her mainstream fame.

  • If Slavery Is Not Wrong, Nothing Is Wrong.” —Abraham Lincoln, in a Letter Dated April 4, 1864
“If slavery is not wrong, nothing is wrong.” —Abraham Lincoln, in a letter dated April 4, 1864 n the final four months of Abraham Lincoln’s life and presidency, the full measure of the man—his passion and his humanity—came to bear on his defining battle: to I plot a forward path for a shattered nation, against overwhelming odds and extreme public and personal pressure. Steven Spielberg’s “Lincoln” provides an intimate immersion into the American leader’s most perilous and revealing moments, at a time when the dark shadow of slavery lifts and a country torn by war must be made whole. A rich human drama plays out as Lincoln doubles down to end the devastating Civil War not merely by ending the war but by fighting to pass the 13th Amendment, permanently abolishing slavery. It will be an act of true national daring. He will have to call upon all the skill, courage and moral fortitude for which he’ll become legend. He will grapple with the impact of his actions on the world and on those he loves. But what lies in the balance is what always mattered most to Lincoln: to compel the American people, and those in his government of opposite persuasions, to alter course and aim higher, toward a greater good for all mankind. Brought to life via a layered screenplay by Pulitzer Prize winner Tony Kushner, Spielberg’s starkly human storytelling and the performance of Daniel Day-Lewis leading an accomplished cast, the film invites audiences directly into the heart and soul of Lincoln’s final achievements.
