RESOLUTION Gregory D. Moon

WHEREAS, Gregory D. Moon was born in 1969, a Hoopa Valley Tribal Member raised in Redding, CA and resides in Riverside, CA; and

WHEREAS, Gregory D. Moon attended Haskell Indian Nations University, Lawrence, KS and later received Technical Fire Management Certificate Washington Institute Bothell, WA; and

WHEREAS, He served as a natural resources student intern for U.S. Forest Service at EI Dorado N.F. and Six Rivers N.F., before starting as a warehouseman at the Hoopa Fire Department in Hoopa, CA; and

WHEREAS, Gregory worked his way through the ranks up to Battalion Chief and after fifteen years, took a position with the Bureau of Indian Affairs in Southern California; and

WHEREAS, Gregory has served for four years as the Southern California Agency Fire Management Officer; and

WHEREAS, He is currently working with Aztecs Rising, City of Los Angeles, City of San Bernardino, Southern California Tribes and other cooperators to establish careers for people who are interested in becoming wild-land firefighters:

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that by the adoption of this resolution, the Los Angeles City Council, along with the Mayor, hereby salute and recognize GREGORY D. MOON for his dedication to the communities of Los Angeles and for making the City of Los Angeles a safer and better place in which to live, work and play.

WHEREAS, as the population ages and more Americans become serious citizens with "nest eggs," they become greater targets for fraud and deception. The ease of access for criminals to contact seniors through the internet and telephone increases as more creative schemes emerge; and

WHEREAS, senior fraud is a growing concern as millions have fallen victim to Medicare scams, sweepstakes and lottery scams, investment and work at home scams, bereavement scams, identity theft, charity scams, granny scams and home repair scams. Seniors average one scam-type letter and two telemarketing phone calls per week; and

WHEREAS, senior fraud is under reported due to older adults' embarrassment and lack of information on where to report such fraud; and

WHEREAS, approximately 5 million cases of financial exploitation of the elderly in the U.S. occur each year and the financial loss by victims is more than $2.9 billion annually; and

WHEREAS, caregivers, con artists and unscrupulous salespersons are the primary instigators of senior fraud. The tactics used are intimidation, fear, friendliness, authority and control to get the victim to send money or share private financial information to; and

WHEREAS, senior citizens own more than half of all the financial assets in America and are consequently the primary targets for fraudulent practices. It is estimated by the U.S. Subcommittee on Health and Long Term Care that seniors represent 30% of scam victims; and

WHEREAS, the "Stop Senior Scams Program" is made up of35 students from the Los Angeles Unified School District's Programs for Older Adults who perform educational skits at numerous venues in order to inform the public about current scams that target the older adult population:

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that by the adoption of this resolution, the Los Angeles City Council hereby declares May 15,2014, as "Senior Fraud Awareness Day" in the City of Los Angeles.

RESOLUTION Katy Sullivan

WHEREAS, shortly after Katy Sullivan was born without either of her lower legs a doctor told her mother that, "the world didn't need another athlete, but she would find other things she'd be good at." At the time there was no way of knowing what had happened to her legs or if she was even going to be able to use them at all. But with the support of her family. she grew up believing that she could do anything and everything that wanted to and was never treated like I was any different than them. That doctor was right about sports for quite sometime as it was very difficult for Katy to 'keep up' with the other kids and she started to look for those other things that she might be good at; and

WHEREAS, as a young adult she discovered theatre and decided to dedicate her life to acting, including attending Webster University's Theatre Conservatory, where she spent four years training in acting, voice, movement, improv, dialects, and even gymnastics. She was involved in numerous productions in starring and supporting roles, she even performed in a production where one character was an amputee; she didn't play that role. Her acting career has taken her all over the country doing Stage in Chicago, Film in New York and TV in LA; and

WHEREAS, she continues to act and has appeared in numerous independent films, including the festival bound Recalculating, has been featured on many television shows, including NBC's pilot, I'm with Stupid, their hit show, My Name is Earl, ABC's Last Man Standing starring Tim Allen and the new comedy on FX called Legit. She recently starred in The Long Red Road directed by Philip Seymour Hoffman at the Goodman Theatre in Chicago. She also appeared in the upcoming Warner Bros sci-f project called Rise; and

WHEREAS, the move to sunny California not only brought her success in her acting career, it has opened the door to an athletic chapter in her life that she never saw coming, through the support of Hanger Clinic, she began running on custom made carbon fiber sprinting legs. It took a while and a lot of training but she learned how to run in these high tech legs and it has been a whirlwind ever since; and

WHEREAS, upon completing her first event, the 100m, in 2007, Katy has been blazing a trail for women amputees around the world. She is the first bilateral above knee amputee to compete internationally in track in the world, male or female, which means she has to compete against women who have one leg. In a very short amount of time, Katy qualified for the US Paralympic Track Team and has represented the USA at multiple International events. She is the three time US Champion in the 100m, the fastest woman in the Western Hemisphere and ranked 5th in the world among women who have a whole 'leg up' on her. She was among the first bilateral above the knee amputees to compete in the Paralympics in ambulatory track when she ran in the 100m in London 2012. She set a new American record of 17.335 and finished 6th in the World:

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that by the adoption of this resolution, the Los Angeles City Council hereby salute and congratulate KATY SULLIVAN for her exceptional work and dedicated commitment to the students of the Ready, Set, Gold! Sally Field

WHEREAS, Sally Field, born in Pasadena, California and raised in a show business family, Ms. Field began her career in 1964 in the television series Gidget. She went on to star in the The Flying Nun in 1967. She starred in three television series by the age of twenty-five. She received Emmy Awards for her title role in the landmark miniseries Sybil and for her performance on ER. She also received Emmy nominations for her role in Showtime's A Cooler Climate and the NBC miniseries A Woman oj Independent Means which she co-produced and for which she received a Golden Globe nomination. Ms. Field co-starred in the ABC series drama Brothers & Sisters from 2006 to 2011 and for her role as "Nora Walker," Ms. Field received a Screen Actors Guild Award and an Emmy Award as well as two Golden Globe nominations; and

WHEREAS, Sally Field, a two-time Academy Award winner, most recently starred in Steven Spielberg's critically acclaimed Lincoln as Mary Todd for which she won the New York Film Critics award for best supporting actress and was also nominated for a Golden Globe, Screen Actors Guild, Critics Choice, BAFTA and Academy Award. Field previously won Academy Awards for her performances in Robert Benton's Places in the Heart, for which she also received a Golden Globe, and Martin Ritt's Norma Rae, for which she received a Golden Globe, along with the New York Film Critics prize, the National Board of Review Award, the Los Angeles Film Critics Award, the National Society of Film Critics honor and Best Actress at the Cannes Film Festival; and

WHEREAS, Ms. Field has also received Golden Globe nominations for her work in Smokey and the Bandit, Absence of Malice, Kiss Me Goodbye, Steel Magnolias and Forrest Gump, Her many film credits include An Eye for An Eye, Mrs. Doubtfire, Soapdish, Not Without My Daughter, The End, Hooper, Stay Hungry (her first major film role), as welland as Punchltne and Murphy's Romance, both of which were produced by her production company, Fogwood Films;

WHEREAS, Ms. Field made her directorial debut in 1996 with the ABC telefilm The Christmas Tree which she co- wrote and which starred Julie Harris. She directed an episode of the HBO miniseries From the Earth to the Moon" and in 2000 made her feature film directorial debut with Beautiful starring Minnie Driver; and

WHEREAS, In 2002, Ms. Field made her Broadway debut in Edward Albee's The Goat and in 2004, received rave reviews for her role as "Amanda" in Tennessee Williams' The Glass Menagerie at The Kennedy Center; and

WHEREAS, Ms. Field has served on the Board of Directors of Vital Voices since 2002. She has served as Mistress of Ceremony at Vital Voices Global Leadership Awards gala held at The Kennedy Center from 2002 through 20011. She also served on the Board of Directors of The Sundance Institute from 1994 to 2010; and

WHEREAS, In 2012, Ms. Field appeared as Aunt May in The Amazing Spiderman and will reprise her role in The Amazing Spiderman 2 scheduled for release in 2014; and

WHEREAS, Sally Field, on Monday, May 5, 2014, will be honored by the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame:

NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that by the adoption of this resolution, the Los Angeles City Council does hereby commend and congratulate SALLY FIELD on the occasion of being presented with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. We wish her many years of continued success on all future endeavors.

"Dia del Nicaraguense" May 3,2014

Whereas, There are approximately 400,000 Nicaraguans in Southern California There are approximately 200,000 Nicaraguans in the City of Los Angeles The Comite Cultural Nicaraguense Jose de la Cruz Mena has requested that the City of Los Angeles recognize these Nicaraguans in a celebration of their cultural background and of their establishment in the fabric and communities of Los Angeles and Southern California; and

Whereas, The Comite Cultural Nicaraguense Jose de la Cruz Mena is also recognizing and honoring the Nicaraguan composer who was born on May 3, 1874, in the City of Leon, Nicaragua, and would like to share recognition of the life and music of Jose de la Cruz Mena with the rest of the residents and citizens of Los Angeles and Southern California; and

Whereas, Jose de la Cruz Men":i(187lt-1907),was a music composer little known outside Nicaragua who composed classical waltzes in Nicaragua in the European style popular at the time. At a young age he was diagnosed with leprosy and was blind by 22. He was put in a leper colony but his music caught the attention of an Army general who brought him back to society to compose more waltzes before his untimely death at 33; and

Whereas, a day of recognition for the Nicaraguan community serves to strengthen their roots and cultural heritage and helps bind the community together. Recognition by the City of Los Angeles helps strengthen ties to their adopted City and to the government and democratic processes of their adopted country; and

Whereas, the cultural contribution of Nicaraguans to the United States is a rich mix of traditions and flavors. Nicaraguans enjoy these traditions and flavors because they are the roots and customs which are shared with great pleasure and pride to the country and other communities; and

Whereas, Nicaraguan's most outstanding traditions are: Folkloric Dances, the sounds of marimba and Nicaraguan Music and our Patron Festivals. These include San Sebastian in Diriamba on January 20th, Viacrucis at Easter, the celebrations of Blue Fields with the dances of Palo de Mayo, festivities of San Jeronimo, and the famous Toro Venado of Masaya, The Managua festivities of Santo Domingo on August, celebrations of La Purisima with chants to Virgen Mary, the traditional Misa Campesina and Chritmas Festivities; and

Whereas, Nicaraguan flavors are those given by nature to enhance its food. These are mixed together to get that season which characterizes Nicaragua and fills us with smells of: Nacatamal, Baho, Gallo pinto, Guirila with Cuajada, Leche Agria, Vigoron, Yoltamal, Indio Viejo, Sopa de queso, Rondon and many dishes more. Other flavors are refreshing beverages and sweet desserts

such as: EI Pinolillo, LA Chicha, the Pozol con Leche, EI Tiste, E1 Cacao, La Pitahaya, E1 Atol, ~'~~~"i~ La Cuznaca, EI Almivar, Los Coyoles en Miel, Los Nancites en Guaro, Las cajetas, Los Bunuelos f."~e~ and all those sweet memories of our beloved land of lakes and volcanoes, so is our culture, so is e..'iBR8iW~ Nicaragua; and

Whereas, a day of recognition for the Nicaraguan community serves to welcome residents and citizens that are already here but may feel isolated from the polyglot of communities that is Los Angeles and Southern California and encourage these residents to leam about and participate in governmental and civic institutions; and MAY - 2 2014 Whereas, it is also with the purpose of establishing solidarity for all Nicaraguan people, which at one time during recent history in Nicaragua was not so unified, that here in Los Angeles and Southern California, a solid cultural pride and awareness for Nicaragua can be established by all persons here of Nicaraguan descent.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that by the adoption of this resolution the Los Angeles City Council do hereby declare May 3, 2014 "Dia del Nicaraguense" in celebration of the beautiful and rich culture ofthe people of Nicaraguan descent in the City of Los Angeles.

WHEREAS, we are proud to honor the contributions of Chartered Financial Analysts (CFA) and to celebrate Putting Investors First Day in Los Angeles; and

WHEREAS, CFA's mission is to lead the investment profession globally by promoting the highest standards of ethics, education, and professional excellence for the benefit of investors and, ultimately of society; and

WHEREAS, Putting Investors First Month will feature a series of events and outreach throughout the month of May, hosted by hundreds of CFA Institute members and many of the organization's 143 member societies worldwide; and

WHEREAS, through Putting Investors First Month, CFA Institute aims to inspire the industry to ensure that investors' rights to information, fair and honest advice, and accurate assessment of risk and reward is at the core of client service; and

WHEREAS, CFA has made a commitment to uphold the highest standards of investment practice and to serve investors and the global economy and to affect positive change in finance; and

WHEREAS, CFA Society of Los Angeles continues to work to improve the quality of financial decision-making throughout the city by developing their members' ability to provide valuable leadership for their clients, their firms, and the CFA Institute; and

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVEDthat by the adoption of this resolution, the City of Los Angeles hereby proclaims May 16, 2014 to be Putting Investors First Day in the City of Los Angeles.
