HISTORIC RESOURCE DESIGN GUIDELINES CHAPTER 2.1: WINDOWS CITY OF SANTA BARBARA CHApteR 2.1: WinDOWS INTRODUCTION Windows are one of the most visible, yet commonly under-appreci- ated components of older and historic homes and historic resources. Many historic structures in Santa Barbara have original wood win- dows that have lasted over a century. They may have intricate details that give depth, light, and shadow to a building’s façade. Original windows reflect the design intent for the building, including the period, regional style, and building techniques. In fact, many wood windows are considered hand-crafted pieces of art that are examples of exceptional craftsmanship and design. Windows give scale to a building and provide visual interest to the composition of individual façades, while distinct designs help de- fine many historic building styles. These openings define character through their material, profile, shape, size, configuration, and ar- rangement on the façade. These Guidelines will help property own- ers consider all the factors and options when repairing or replacing original windows. INNOVATIVE BUILDING SOLUTIONS: Building Better Commercial Buildings With Engineered Wood Technologies Presented By: Sharon Roscher LP Building Solutions This Presentation was developed by a third party and is not funded by Woodworks or the Softwood Lumber Board 6/2/20 1 Engineered Wood Is Made From Wood – A Renewable Resource § Manufacturers use SFI®-certified forest management and procurement systems which help ensure wood comes from well-managed forests § Improved Manufacturing process means no part of the log goes to waste § Use of only low-emitting, safe resins as a binder History Of Engineered Wood • Even after the delivery of logs to Particle Board a sawmill, residue materials had • represented up to 60% of the log 1887-1941-Particle Board-Germany • 1950’s-Particle Board production in the US (LDF) • Wood waste after the production of structural lumber Plywood was a concern for producers and • 1940’s-Plywood Forestry Agencies • 1946-NOVOPLY (3-ply MDF) Strand Board • 1965-Waferboard (random strand) • 1978-Flakeboard (Oriented Strand Board) Forest Service Supported OSB Technology • In 1973 A symposium was held by the Forest Service’s Structural Flakeboard OSB Growth in the US Task Force. The meeting was titled 1980-750M sq ft “Structural Flakeboard from Forest Residues” 1990-7.6 B sq ft • The cost savings from plywood helped 2006-31 B sq ft OSB gain market acceptance 2013-24 B sq ft • Benefits include: shear strength, longer 2018-26 B sq ft lengths, using new growth trees over larger trees needed for plywood What is Cementitious Coated
