These forests have met the needs of Maine residents and businesses for generations. From wood fiber for Maine’s forest products sector, to wildlife habitat and recreational opportunities, Maine’s forests have endured through the centuries as both economic resource and cultural mainstay. Today, Maine is home to one of the nation’s largest and most diversified forest products sectors, with over 200 processing facilities located state-wide. Each year, our mills produce materials ranging from paper and lumber, to hardwood panels, composite decking, renewable energy, and a host of specialty products. Maine ranks 1st in the Nation in terms of the sector’s contribution to the state’s economy, and 2nd in the sector’s contribution to state jobs. Maine also ranks 2nd in paper production, exceeded only by Wisconsin. Maine’s forest products sector generates some $4.3 billion in value each year, and accounts for over 40% of Maine’s manufacturing sales while supporting over 18,000 direct and 55,000 indirect jobs. These well-paying jobs – with wages roughly 50% higher than the state average – are especially important to the state’s rural communities. Sustaining Maine’s forest products sector and the jobs it provides requires a productive, well-managed and healthy forest. It also requires up-to-date information about products and markets. The 2010 Directory of Maine’s Primary Wood Processors is a comprehensive listing of all facilities in the state that convert roundwood into finished products. The Directory is intended to help businesses and individuals make informed decisions by providing a resource for both buyers and sellers of wood, forest products, and manufacturing-related byproducts. Such information is important in building awareness and establishing communication between mills, loggers, and landowners. It is also critical in realizing the highest value from our forest resources, and in assisting individuals in locating new processing facilities that rely on raw or processed inputs, or produce secondary forest products. The information reported here is based on processor production reports for calendar year 2010 received by the Maine Forest Service in early 2011. In most instances, information on products and facilities was provided by processors through mail and phone surveys. For mills that did not respond to the surveys, the information listed in this Directory is repeated from the 2000 edition – the most recent listing prior to this. Such mills have an asterisk following the mill name. At this time, firewood producers are not included in the Directory, although future editions will likely include these processors. 1 Using the Directory… The Directory divides Maine’s primary wood processors into five sections: (1) stationary sawmills; (2) portable sawmills; (3) pulp and paper manufacturers; (4) stand-alone biomass-fired electrical generating facilities; and (5) wood pellet manufacturers. Entries under each section provide location and contact information, along with processing equipment and the types of wood purchased. A new feature of the 2010 Directory is information about whether or not mills purchase certified wood. Here, purchaser preference for wood certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) is indicated under the SPECIES category with matching footnote #. A question mark next to the SPECIES category indicates that the mill purchases certified wood, but did not specify any particular species or certification program. A set of indexes in the back of the Directory provide processor information by name (alphabetical listing with page numbers), location by county, and products manufactured for sawmills. A Note to Readers… Keeping this Directory up-to-date is a challenge. If you see that a particular mill is missing or has incorrect or incomplete information, please contact the Maine Forest Service toll-free at 1-800-367-0223. Acknowledgments We would like to thank Peter McBride and Jamie Judd for assistance with this project. The Directory is a joint effort by the Maine Forest Service and the University of Maine’s School of Forest Resources. Funding and support was provided by the Maine Forest Service, the University of Maine’s Forest Bioproducts Research Initiative (National Science Foundation Grant No. EPS-0554545), the Maine Sustainability Solutions Initiative (National Science Foundation Grant No. EPS-0904155), the Center for Research on Sustainable Forests, and the Maine Agricultural and Forest Experiment Station. 2 3 PART I.
