D. Additional Information Executive Summary

This project involved restructuring of the Far Point dike and intake structure and construction of a 400m side channel at North Vancouver Outdoor School. Approximately 80m of dike was reconstructed and the existing 2- 2ft intake pipes replaced with a single 3 ft pipe, headwall and valve assemblies. A 400m river fed side channel was constructed, providing 3840 m2 of new habitat. This project was link to other ongoing initiatives funded by various partnership groups including the School Protection Program, the Provincial Emergency Program, District of Squamish, School District #44 and the concurrent BCRP project 04.Ch.3 (Cheakamus River October 2003 Flood Restoration).

Introduction

The North Vancouver Outdoor School (NVOS) has worked with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) and various funding partners to develop salmon habitat restoration projects on school property over the last two decades. These projects have been directed at improving spawning and rearing habitats for coho, chum, chinook and pink salmon. NVOS has operated a teaching hatchery that has produced chum, chinook and coho fry for over two decades. This project is directed at providing additional important spawning and rearing habitats, primarily for chinook and pink salmon and steelhead.

Study Area

The restoration site is located off the right bank of the Cheakamus River approximately 500m upstream of the Paradise Valley Road Bailey Bridge on property owned by the North Vancouver Outdoor School, School District 44 (North Vancouver). The site is designated as District Lots 1245 within the New Westminster Land District. Maps covering the site are Natural Resources Canada National Topographic System 92G/14 and Base-mapping and Geomatic Services Terrain Resources Information Management 92G.085. The site lies roughly between GBS coordinates: (Far Point intake structure): N 49°˚ 49. 844' W123°˚ 09. 396' and (the Mykiss Channel exit): N 49˚° 49. 687' W123°˚ 08. 238' Methods

Approx. 2080 m3 of rock was excavated from the Farpoint intake site and placed on the reconstructed dike nearby. Appox, 2200 m3 of engineered fill, supplied by the District of Squamish, was placed and compacted during reconstruction of this dike. (Material supplied by the District of Squamish replaced materials borrowed from NVOS to make emergency repairs to Paradise Valley Road - immediately following the October 2003 flood)

Excavation was done with Cat 225, 235 and 320 excavators and Cat 966 loaders. Material was moved around site by a variety of standard dump trucks and a D250 Cat truck. LWDs were placed using a Cat 320 excavator and transported with standard dump trucks and a D250 Cat truck. LWDs were supplied by NVOS. NVOS partnered with Fisheries and Oceans Canada during all phases of the design and development of these restoration works.

Results

The Farpoint intake dike was upgraded to Ministry standards with the addition of 2000 m3 of rock excavated during construction of the new intake outflow channel and pond. The new intake pipe and valve assemblies provide significantly greater flows than the structures they replaced. Prior to completion of this project, significant portions of the Far Point Channel system dried up during periods of low flow due to the insufficient water supply. When the new intake system went on line, it was necessary to raise some stream side trails because of minor flooding because of the augmented flows. The Mykiss Channel was constructed utilizing existing relic channels and floodways. Construction resulted in the creation of 400m of new channel, providing 2760 m2 of prime spawning and rearing habitat, 580 m2 of wood filled “refuge” pockets and 500 m2 of connected sidepond habitat. Two log jams were constructed to divert flood flows and debris away from the new habitats. 5: Acknowledgements

This project would not have been possible without the financial support of BC Hydro Bridge Coastal Fish and Wildlife Restoration Program and the technical and supervisory support of Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Pacific Region Habitat and Enhancement Branch, particularly Matt Foy, Harold Beardmore, and Sam Gidora. Excavation contracting was provided by John Hunter Ltd. This project would not have been completed without the dedicated service of Rick and John Hunter. Mykiss Channel’s final form and success is the result of the sensitive construction expertise of John Hunter. Rock, additional gravels and LWDs were supplied on site by North Vancouver Outdoor School. Valve assemblies were paid for with contributions from Greg Miller and the Ministry of Environment, Lands and Parks (MELP) Log jam cabling was completed by Cory Hryhorczuk and the Greater Georgia Basin Steelhead Recovery Plan (GGBSRP) www.steelheadrecoveryplan.ca Letters of support were provided for the initial grant application by: Randall Lewis ; Harold Beardmore P.Eng. Cheakamus River - Mykiss Channel Project / 04.Ch.1 / Final Report / Photo page 1 Far Point Intake Reconstruction Replacing the Far Point Intake Supply and Valve The pre-existing Far Point intake consisted of an intake, which entered a concrete chamber, from which exited 2 - 2 ft diameter steel pipes, controlled by gate valves on the end of each pipe. This system was prone to flow losses and silt deposition, significantly decreasing supply. The concrete chamber was removed and the 2 pipes replaced with a single 3’ diameter pipe, new headwall structure, new 3’ gate valve and extended headpond. Pipe installation The first section of pipe was installed with a 1/4” plate steel “blind” between the two lengths of pipe. This blocked the flow of water through the intake structure until the downstream sections of pipe, headwall and valve assembly were installed. Upon completion of valve installation this blind was removed and the two lengths of pipe bolted tightly together. A concrete piping shield was then poured around the intake pipe approx. mid way through the dike to prevent seepage.

Constructing protective berm - note concrete chamber • While the existing infrastructure was removed and replaced, temporary supply to the Far Point system was provided by a 2’ pipe feeding directly from the river. A temporary berm was constructed around the site - protecting it from river inflows. Significant effort was made to protect large cottonwood habitat trees in the work site.

Completing installation of headwall structure

Completed headpond, valve and headwall assembly First section of pipe with “blind” installed • Cheakamus River - Mykiss Channel Project / 04.Ch.1 / Final Report / Photo page 2 Laying rock toe protecting Far Point intake pipe Mykiss Channel Background Mykiss Channel lies within the floodplain of the Cheakamus River, protected at the inflow end by a constructed log jam. It is approx. 200 metres long and is designed with a series of riffles and pools providing habitat for all species of salmonids and trout in the Cheakamus system.

Far Point Dike Reconstruction The impacts of the 2003 flood captured the attention of mainstream government agencies. Dikes that were once considered “bank protection” were now being reassessed and the Far Point area attracted this review. Staff from the office of the Inspector of Dikes and engineers representing the District of Squamish, reviewed the proposed works in this area and their “recommendations” were included into the new design criteria. Looking south - lower reach 3 Mykiss Channels also includes a side pond complex and several refuge pockets filled with large woody debris. Because this channel is outside the valley diking system, wood cover is buried deeply into the bank or anchored with steel cables.

Far Point intake pipe scour protection completed A trench was excavated along the existing intake pipe (on the river side, outside the dike) and filled with large rip rap material creating a toe along its entire length, protecting it from erosion. Smaller blasted material was deposited on top of the dike for scour protection. Looking north - upper reach 2

Cheakamus River - Mykiss Channel Project / 04.Ch.1 / Final Report / Photo page 3 Channel Construction Construction started after a corridor was established down the floodplain utilizing relic channels and existing flow routes. This corridor was scrubbed out, removing existing underbrush and excavated to rough grade while maintaining the bank side cover of trees and other riparian plants. A final construction “pass” included installation of cobble filled riffles and large woody debris filled refuge pockets.

Completed channel: riffles, pools, LWD cover Flow Controls Constructed log jams at the mid point of reach 3 and at the main intake, control the flow of water down the channel and are designed to capture flood debris and divert the majority of the flood flows away from the channel.

First pass: clearing a corridor

Constructed log jam: reach 3

Second pass: defining to grade

Finishing pass: digging pools and setting cobble in riffles Constructed log jam: channel intake
