Medium to full bodied, but no oak, and vines that pre-date phylloxera. Burlotto Verduno Piedmont [ 2016 ] 13 52 Pelaverga is a rare, heirloom variety almost extinct by the 1970’s and rarely seen outside of Verduno even today. Once prized by the Royal Italian court and thought of as an afrodisiac, the Burlotto family have been growing and championing it since 1800; hibiscus, spicey red fruit, light-bodied, juicy. Piculit Neri Bulfon Friuli [ 2015 ] 15 60 A rare variety popular during Roman times, it’s rather unknown by modern eonology, only rediscov - ered by local producers; wild berries, both fruity and tannic. Nerello Mascalese Calabretta Etna Sicily nv 14 56 This super small production Nerello Mascalese comes from 70-80 year old organic, ungrafted vines planted on black volcanic soil. An uber traditional wine fermented with native yeasts that resembles old school Barolo meets Burgundy.
