Nsmen and Employers Reaffirm Commitment to Defence NSmen and Employers Reaffirm Commitment to Defence 30 Jun 2017 Minister for Defence Dr Ng Eng Hen (centre) joined the Operationally Ready National Servicemen (NSmen), employers, and senior Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) commanders in reaffirming their commitment to the defence of Singapore, as they recited the SAF Pledge earlier this morning at the first of fo.. More than 460 Operationally Ready National Servicemen (NSmen) from about 380 companies and their employers gathered for the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) Day 1 Combined Rededication Ceremonies held at four locations around Singapore this morning to reaffirm their commitment to the defence of Singapore. Minister for Defence Dr Ng Eng Hen officiated at the rededication ceremony held at Temasek Polytechnic, where he delivered the SAF Day message to remind Singaporeans of the importance of a strong and capable SAF to protect the nation's sovereignty and our way of life. He said, "This year's SAF Day is special because we are commemorating 50 years of National Service… As a small country with limited manpower, we could not have built today's strong SAF without the commitment and whole-hearted support of national servicemen." Dr Ng added, "The SAF must stay active and alert against the threats to our security.…We live in troubled and violent times and must guard against extremist terrorists who would do us harm, whether it is here or abroad… A strong SAF will be maintained as the most effective deterrence against potential aggressors. But the SAF can only be as strong as its individual soldiers, so each national serviceman and Regular must give his and her best to protect our beloved Singapore. This SAF day, let us all solemnly pledge to defend our home and fellow Singaporeans -- our families, friends, colleagues and neighbours." Minister for Trade and Industry (Trade) Mr Lim Hng Kiang, Minister for Manpower Mr Lim Swee Say, and Minister for the Environment and Water Resources Mr Masagos Zulkifli Bin Masagos Mohamad officiated at the other three Combined Rededication Ceremonies held at The JTC Summit, Singapore Institute of Technology @Dover, Procter & Gamble's Singapore Innovation Center respectively. The Combined Rededication Ceremonies this year featured an NS50 Pledge Ceremony to commemorate 50 years of National Service (NS). A total of 372 participating companies signed the NS Mark[1] Declaration of Support -- which symbolises the collective commitment of employers in catalysing a societal movement in support of our NSmen as they tirelessly preserve and protect the peace and stability of our nation -- to pledge their support for NS. [1] The NS Mark is a national-level accreditation scheme that recognises businesses and organisations that have policies and human resource practices in place that support NS and 2 our NSmen. It aims to encourage businesses to adopt a more NS-friendly workplace culture that helps our NSmen to fulfil their NS obligations, while balancing their work and family commitments. Minister for Defence Dr Ng Eng Hen attended the 12th meeting of the Singapore- Australia Joint Ministerial Committee (SAJMC) via video conferencing this morning. During the meeting, Dr Ng and Australian Minister for Defence Peter Dutton reaffirmed the close and long-standing defence relationship between Singapore and Australia. Both Ministers expressed satisfaction with the steady progress made in the joint development of training areas and advanced training facilities in Queensland, Australia, amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. This is one of the key initiatives under the Singapore-Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. 2. The Ministers also exchanged views on regional and international security issues of mutual concern to both countries, including the need to enhance counter-terrorism and cybersecurity cooperation. They welcomed the deployment of an Australian liaison officer to the Counter-Terrorism Information Facility in Singapore. Both Ministers were also encouraged by the close cooperation between both countries at the ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting- Plus and the commitment to the Five Power Defence Arrangements, which will mark its 50th anniversary later this year. 3. This includes areas such as scenario planning, budget, manpower, population, land, security, climate change and new opportunities in the Digital and Future Economy. We have formed the Smart Nation and Digital Government Group last May to accelerate our Smart Nation efforts. Dr Fatimah Lateef and Mr Lee Yi Shyan cited demographic challenges, which stem from our low total fertility rate. Agencies have worked together to strengthen our support for marriage and parenthood in the key areas of housing, pre-school, and support in the workplace and the community. Minister Josephine Teo will give an update of our population priorities and strategies to ensure that we are well-prepared for the future later on during this Committee of Supply for PMO. Climate change is also a whole-of-nation issue where all countries need to take action now to safeguard our collective future. Together with other countries, Singapore will do our part to reduce our emissions. To do so in a cost-effective manner, the carbon tax is a decisive move. Its merits were discussed extensively during the Budget debate. The transition period and support will also help our companies and consumers make the adjustments.     CONTENTS | NEXT PREVIOUS | CONTENTS | NEXT 24 Jul 07 Mr Mah Bow Tan Minister for National Development Dear Minister, In November 2006 you asked me to lead a public consultation exercise to explore how we can better build HDB communities, in response to the challenges of globalisation, changing demographics and increasing expectations among Singaporeans. I launched the Forum on HDB Heartware with a team of Parliamentary colleagues to engage the public on this issue. Our vision was to build a HDB community where residents do not just own their own homes, but also share a collective ownership of the entire community. The Forum has now completed its study after several rounds of discussion with the public, and deliberation with Government agencies. We propose to enrich the character of the HDB Town, enhance the neighbourhood precinct and raise the community involvement of schools. We also feel that it is important to support the family unit within the community, engage residents more and encourage local voluntarism. The Forum is mindful that community building is essentially a ground-up process. Much will depend on the response of residents and the leadership of local institutions such as the grassroots, the schools and the voluntary welfare organisations. Besides policy measures and recommendations relating to facilities and other hardware, the Forum has kick-started a few pilot projects at the local level, and highlighted some existing ones in our Report, with the intention of catalysing similar efforts at community building in other neighbourhoods. The wide-ranging scope of our recommendations is a reflection both of the complexities of community-building and the richness of the public discussions.
