Nsmen and Employers Reaffirm Commitment to Defence NSmen and Employers Reaffirm Commitment to Defence 01 Jul 2016 Minister for Defence Dr Ng Eng Hen (third from left) joined the NSmen, employers and senior SAF commanders in reaffirming their commitment to the defence of Singapore as they recited the SAF Pledge in the first of four rededication ceremonies, which was held at Singapore Chinese Chamber of Commer.. Earlier today, more than 680 NSmen from 303 companies and their employers gathered for the SAF Day combined rededication ceremonies held at four locations around Singapore to reaffirm their commitment to the defence of Singapore. 1 Minister for Defence Dr Ng Eng Hen officiated at the rededication ceremony held at the Singapore Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry, where he delivered the SAF Day message to remind Singaporeans of the importance of a strong and capable SAF to protect the nation's sovereignty and our way of life. He said "On this SAF day, the men and women of the SAF reaffirm their individual pledge to perform their duty to the best of their ability and to faithfully and diligently protect Singapore with their lives. I ask all Singaporeans in turn to support the SAF, with their hearts, encouragement and solidarity. What we inherited from our founding generation - our home, our Singapore - is precious and our way of life worth defending together." Pledge leader for the ceremony, CPT(NS) Benjamin Ow who led the 190 NSmen in the recitation of the SAF pledge, said that the ceremony was an opportune time for NSmen to reflect on their roles in the defence of Singapore. In his reflection, he recounted his NS, how it had changed his life and shared about his experiences during Operation Flying Eagle, the Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) Operation undertaken by the SAF for the Boxing Day Tsunami in 2004, saying that "NS definitely changed my life." He added that his "close circle of friends was made in NS and we still meet up regularly, even if some of us are no longer in active service… it was a big part of my life and will continue to stick to me as the time will eventually come for my 3 little boys to do their part. It was a privilege to contribute my part to NS." Minister for Health, Mr Gan Kim Yong, Minister for Culture, Community and Youth Ms Grace Fu, and Minister for National Development Mr Lawrence Wong officiated at the other three rededication ceremonies held at SAFRA Punggol, Singapore Institute of Technology and Biopolis respectively. Minister for Defence Dr Ng Eng Hen attended the 12th meeting of the Singapore- Australia Joint Ministerial Committee (SAJMC) via video conferencing this morning. During the meeting, Dr Ng and Australian Minister for Defence Peter Dutton reaffirmed the close and long-standing defence relationship between Singapore and Australia. Both Ministers expressed satisfaction with the steady progress made in the joint development of training areas and advanced training facilities in Queensland, Australia, amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. This is one of the key initiatives under the Singapore-Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. 2. The Ministers also exchanged views on regional and international security issues of mutual concern to both countries, including the need to enhance counter-terrorism and cybersecurity cooperation. They welcomed the deployment of an Australian liaison officer to the Counter-Terrorism Information Facility in Singapore. Both Ministers were also encouraged by the close cooperation between both countries at the ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting- Plus and the commitment to the Five Power Defence Arrangements, which will mark its 50th anniversary later this year. 3. The Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) and the Australian Defence Force have a long history of military cooperation, with extensive interactions including bilateral and multilateral exercises, professional exchanges, cross attendance of courses and joint operational deployments.     Speech by Minister Grace Fu on Population White Paper at the Parliamentary Debate Sustaining a Strong Singaporean Core Introduction Madam Speaker, many members before me have spoken from the heart about the concerns expressed by Singaporeans. Do we need to have so many immigrants? Are we getting the right immigrants? Can they be integrated into our society? I would like to address these concerns. I will focus on the need to sustain a strong Singaporean core, and how we will work towards achieving this. Our Demographic Challenge Last month, I visited an Elder Care Centre and met a lady there. She described her family to me. She has 6 children. Of the 6, 4 are married and 2 have remained single. The four married children gave her 5 grandchildren. So from large families of 6 children just a generation ago, more are remaining single, and those that are getting married are having significantly fewer children. This is quite typical amongst families in Singapore and reflects our marriage and parenthood trends, and the demographic challenge of Singapore. The demographic challenge of Singapore in my mind is an outcome of our fertility issues of yesteryear, before we became an independent country. We had a baby boom and this is where we will see a silver tsunaimi hitting us. To illustrate why we need to address this demographic challenge, I would like to introduce you to the Ng family. Mr Ng is 43 and his wife Mrs Ng is 40. The 2 of them have 6 siblings in total. The couple have 2 daughters.

One of Mr Gan’s key focuses at the Ministry of Health is to drive the Healthcare 2020, a masterplan outlining the Government’s strategy to ensure accessibility, quality and affordability of healthcare. This includes the roll-out of MediShield Life, a universal medical insurance that covers all Singaporeans, regardless of health status, for life. MediShield Life started on 1 Nov 2015, and provides Singaporeans greater peace of mind and assurance over their large hospital bills. Mr Gan also helms the Ministerial Committee on Ageing (MCA) which drives the formulation and implementation of ageing policies in Singapore. The MCA looks into matters such as active ageing and lifelong employability; senior friendly infrastructure; quality aged care and research into ageing. In August 2015, the MCA launched a $3 billion Action Plan for Successful Ageing to help Singaporeans age confidently and lead active lives, with strong bonds with family and community. It includes more than 70 initiatives across 12 areas, namely, health and wellness, learning, volunteerism, employment, housing, transport, public spaces, respect and social inclusion, retirement adequacy, healthcare and aged care, protection for vulnerable seniors and research. Mr Gan also co-chairs the national Diabetes Prevention & Care Taskforce which aims to drive whole of society efforts against diabetes in the key areas of prevention, screening and follow-up, and disease management. The Taskforce and its three supporting Workgroups work closely with the healthcare industry, academia, research, and community partners towards creating a supportive environment for people in Singapore to lead lives free from diabetes, and for those with diabetes to manage their condition well.
