Dr Cheong will offer a behind the scenes look into how Singapore has been designer to promote Harmony in Diversity, and the policies and practices that have been implemented to maintain this harmony. HDB is the developer of over 1 million flats in 23 towns and 80% of Singaporean homes, but more importantly, they are responsible for creating the social infrastructure that facilitates the cohesion of diverse groups of Singaporeans to live together in close proximity. They have been successful in building multi-racial communities across Singapore. Dr Cheong has been the CEO of HDB since 2010 and is concurrently the Deputy Secretary (Special Duties) in the Ministry of National Development. An architect-planner, Dr Cheong was also formerly the CEO of the Urban Redevelop- ment Authority from 2004 to 2010. Dr Cheong was awarded the IWF Women Who Make a Difference in Washington DC in 2011. Tour of the National Gallery: Harmony in Diversity – A Nation’s Story Through Art We will be hosted by IWF Singapore's Vice Chair, Ms Chong Siak Ching, CEO of the National Gallery Singapore and Head of the Visual Arts Cluster. She will speak on the design and building of the National Gallery. An icon of the 21st century, National Gallery Singapore elegantly integrates the historical former Supreme Court and City Hall buildings to become the largest and newest addition to Singapore's art museum landscape. Ms Chong will lead us through a specially curated exhibition on Harmony in Diversity in Art. Ms Chong assumed the role of Chief Executive Officer of the National Gallery Singapore and Head of the Visual Arts Cluster, Singapore, in April 2013. She is presently an Independent Director on the Board of Singapore Press Holdings and on the board of various companies, agencies, councils and universities. “In-Conversation” at DBS: The Social and Business Imperatives for Women’s Full Participation in Public and Private Corporations Lunch will be hosted by Mr Piyush Gupta, CEO and director of the Development Bank of Singapore (DBS). This will be followed by an exclusive "In-Conversation" with Minister for Social and Family Development, Mr Tan Chuan Jin, moderated by Sun Media China Founder and Chairperson, Ms Yang Lan. A member of the country's governing People's Action Party, Minister Tan Chuan Jin has served in the Cabinet since May 2014 first as the Minister for Manpower and currently the Minister for Social and Family Development. Minister Tan has taken a strong stance supporting women’s gender diversity and the importance of changing the roles of women in society so as to increase female representation in the workplace. Yang Lan is a household name in China, as a leading broadcast journalist and media entrepreneur. She is the cofounder and Chairperson of Sun Media Group and Sun Culture Foundation. Sun Media Group is one of the leading private media companies in China with businesses ranging from TV production, integrated communications, events, and more. Sun Culture Foundation is a non-profit organization aiming to improve education and promote philanthropy. Tour of the Peranakan Museum: A History of Harmony Explore the Peranakan Museum, with its unique collection of cross-cultural art, costume and jewellery, drawn from Malay, Chinese, Indian, Muslim and European influences. The museum houses the world's finest and most comprehensive collection of Peranakan artefacts. We will be guided through an introduction into the lifestyle and arts of the Peranakans, one of the world’s most successfully integrated communities with a culture that melds together cultures from the Southeast Asian region. She will speak on the topic of “Harmony in Diversity – The Singapore Story”, which will be followed by a Q&A. Mdm Yacob is Singapore’s first female Speaker of Parliament and the second Muslim to serve as the Speaker Parliament of Singapore. Prior to her role as the Speaker of Parliament, she was Minister of State in the Ministry of Social and Family Development and was the first Muslim to be elected a Member of Parliament. Currently, Mdm Yacob is advisor to the Diversity Action Committee. The committee has the objective of building up the representation of women directors on boards of companies. Mdm Yacob has championed the interests of women and workers and has urged companies to reap the benefits of women's participation at the top decision-making levels. Session 1: Harmony in Diversity – Private Beliefs, Public Space The first session will be a discussion involving panelists from a number of religious backgrounds, discussing their views on the topic of “Private Beliefs, Public Space”. The session will be moderated by orthopaedic, spine and hand surgeon, Dr Kanwaljit Soin. Dr Soin was the first female Nominated Member of Parliament from 1992-1996. She has been actively championing the idea of gender neutrality in the law and raising awareness for women’s rights. Dr Soin recognizes that her religion plays a part in her activism because Sikhs believe in gender equality and social justice. Panelists for the discussion include IWF Board member and former Jordanian senator, Ms Suhair Al-Ali. Ms Al-Ali has received a number of recognitions and awards from regional organizations and forums for her contribution as a leading woman in business and in the public sector. Another panelist in the discussion is Nobel Peace Prize winner, Sister Denise Coghlan. Sister Coghlan was awarded the prize for her work on social justice, refugee rights, poverty alleviation and the banning of landmines and cluster bombs in Cambodia. Other panelists include Dr Noeleen Heyzer, former under secretary for the UN, as well as Venerable Chuan Guan. Session 2: Harmony in Diversity – Arts, Culture and Language The topic of “Arts, Culture and Language” will be discussed by panel members from across various media and literary platforms. The discussion will be moderated by academic, diplomat, Singapore’s former ambassador to the United States and IWF member, Ambassador Chan Heng Chee. Ambassador Chan is Ambassador-at-Large with the Singapore Foreign Ministry. Previously, she was Singapore’s Ambassador to the United States and Singapore’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations with concurrent accreditation as High Commissioner to Canada and Ambassador to Mexico. Panelists for the discussion include media mogul, Ms Yang Lan, bestselling author, Ms Meira Chand, as well as Prof. Tan Tai Yong from the National University of Singapore. Session 3: Harmony in Diversity – Perspectives Across Generations Session 3 will incorporate four soapbox speeches by young leaders, facilitated by Chairperson of the Young Women’s Leadership Connection (YWLC), Ms Cheryl Chong. The young leaders will represent various sectors of Singapore from entrepreneurs to students, and discuss their views and experiences on the topic of harmony in diversity. One of the speakers is online marketplace startup, Carousell, co-founder Mr Quek Siu Rui. Since the launch of Carousell in 2012, Mr Quek has been deeply involved in product strategy, international expansion and capital strategy. He is committed to building a product-focused company, focused on solving meaningful problems for people globally. Another speaker is Ms Michelle Khoo, Senior Associate of Social Strategy at the Ministry of Finance. We will have comments and discussions from Ms Melissa Kwee, CEO of the National Volunteer & Philanthropy Centre, along with Mr Patrick Daniel, Deputy CEO at SPH, and Ms Aline Wong, Chancellor of the Singapore Institute of Management. Discussions will be moderated by Ms Teresa Weintraub, President of IWF. Session 4: Harmony in Diversity – Technology and Business Session 4 discovers the role of technology on harmony in diversity. The session will have media influencers and representatives from the media world. Moderating this session is Ms Debra Soon, Head of Family and Premier Segments at MediaCorp. One of the panelists is visually impaired IBM researcher, Ms Chieko Asakawa, who has been instrumental in furthering information accessibility research and development for over three decades. During her years at IBM, she has helped to improve web accessibility and usability for visually impaired individuals and others with special needs, whilst also contributing to advancing technology for these individuals. Two other panelists for session 4 include Ms Pat Law, founder of several digital marketing companies, and Ms Jenny Lee, Managing Partner at of a tech investment firm and recipient of the Business China Young Achiever Award 2016.
