SingTel-UTES NDOC 2009

To celebrate our nation’s 44th birthday, UTES jointly organized National Day Observance Ceremony with SingTel this year. This event was held on 17 August 2009 at Comcentre Theatrette. The Guest-of-Honour for the ceremony was Mr Masagos Zulkifli Bin Masagos Mohamad, Senior Parliamentary Secretary, Ministry of Education & Ministry of Home Affairs. The ceremony was also graced by Mr Allen Lew, CEO , SingTel.

In his opening address, Mr Masagos shared that his sister and himself were beneficiaries of UTES Bursary Award, “…I urged my sister to come out together with me to tell our stories so that parents and employees will know that there is always help from the union for their children to continue to excel in their studies.”

During the ceremony, Mr Logarajah s/o J K Sabapathy, General Secretary of UTES, read out the National Day Message from NTUC Secretary-General, Mr . Next, Mr Mohammad Emran Bin Hamid, UTES Executive Councilor, lead union and management in reciting the National Pledge in unison. The ceremony ended in a high note with all singing “Stand up for Singapore”.

Union Visit by Mr Heng Chee How

As part of NTUC’s ongoing dialogue with the affiliates, Mr Heng Chee How, Deputy Secretary-General, NTUC visited UTES on 25 August 2009. During the visit, Mr Heng shared with UTES Executive Council the overall economic situation and was updated on what is happening on the ground. The issues discussed are cost cutting measures during the economic downturn, 10% salary reduction at the age of 60 years old, and employability of older workers.

UTES Bursary Award 2009

As part of the Union’s continuing efforts to assist members in the education needs of their children, UTES once again offers bursary awards to schooling children of our members. The bursary awards are open to members of UTES, as well as employees in SingTel and SingPost who require financial assistance to meet the education needs of their children. The ceremony was held on 10 October 2009, Saturday at NTUC Auditorium. The Guest of Honor was Mr Wilson Tan, Group CEO of SingPost.

UTES Bursary Awards has been running for its 24th year since it started in 1985. Through the awards, hundreds of our members’ children have benefited every year. UTES, together with SingTel and SingPost continued to administer the bursary awards through a joint application and selection process in 2009. This would be the seventh year that the bursary awards are jointly organised with SingTel and a sixth year with SingPost.

UTES General Secretary, Mr Logarajah s/o J K Sabapathy, in his opening address mentioned that members should not take for granted that since they obtain the bursary award this year that they will automatically qualify for next year. Circumstances can change and they may not be the “needy” one next year.

For the year 2009, the total award value is $129,900, with $60,000 contributed by SingPost, $39,900 contributed by UTES and $30,000 contributed by SingTel. There is an increase of $6,900 given out this year compared to last year.

UTES would like to like to extend our congratulations to all recipients of the Bursary Awards.

SingPost Best Employee Award 2009

The annual SingPost Best Employee of the Year cum Commendation/WOW Award Ceremony was held on 6 October 2009 at Singapore Post Centre. The event was graced by Mr Wilson Tan, Group Chief Executive Officer of SingPost and Mr Roger Tan, President of UTES.

A total of 425 SingPost staff was presented awards in recognition of their performance. Besides the Best Employee of the Year awards, SingPost also gave out commendation awards ranging from Bronze to Gold, depending on the number of compliments received from customers.

UTES would like to convey our heartfelt congratulations to the awardees.

Postman Commended for His Honesty

SingPost Postman and UTES Member, Mr Anuar Bin Ahmad, has been commended by Mr Wilson Tan, Goup Chief Executive Officer of SingPost, for his honesty. In August this year, he found a bag containing cash at the SAM machine at Suntec Post Office. Anuar promptly reported the incident and hand over the bag to the manager at Suntec Post Office. He humbly shared that he just wanted to set a good example and wanted to return the cash so that the owner will be happy.

Submission of Welfare Benefits Scheme Claim

Kindly take note that hospitalization reimbursement and medical assistance claims are to be submitted not later than 30 days from the qualifying event together with supporting documents.

Notice – General Purpose Loan

With reference to the Co-operative Societies (Amendment) Act 2008, all non-credit co- operative are not allowed to offer financial services.
