  • Easter ORIGIN of EASTER: WHERE DID IT COME FROM?
Easter ORIGIN OF EASTER: WHERE DID IT COME FROM? The exact origins of this religious feast day’s name are unknown. Some sources claim the word Easter is derived the Teutonic goddess of spring and fertility. Other accounts trace Easter to the white clothing donned by people who were baptized during that time. Through a translation error, the term later appeared as esostarum in Old High German, which eventually became Easter in English. In Spanish, Easter is known as Pascua; in French, Paques. These words are derived from the Greek and Latin Pascha or Pasch, for Passover. Jesus’ crucifixion and resurrection occurred after he went to Jerusalem to celebrate Passover (or Pesach in Hebrew), the Jewish festival commemorating the ancient Israelites’ exodus from slavery in Egypt. Pascha eventually came to mean Easter. In the Christian Religion Easter is also called Resurrection Sunday. It is a festival celebrating the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, It is a movable feast. Gregorian Calendar has 5th April, Julian Calendar 12th April and Jewish Passover 4th April, for this year. Customs vary across the Christian World. Easter is preceded by Lent. A period of fasting and penitence for Easter, which begins on Ash Wednesday and lasts forty days (not counting Sundays) The week before Easter is Holy week, The Sunday before Easter is Palm Sunday, the last three days are Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday and Good Friday commemorate Jesus entering into Jerusalem. Ash Wednesday a day of fasting, the first day of Lent. Jesus Christ spent 40 days fasting in the dessert.

Traditions: Are these fables and commandments of men or are they of Christ? Author: Pierre Dungee www.getyouranswersonline.com As we explore what traditions are, let’s first find out what the word tradition means: noun 1. the handing down from generation to generation of the same customs, beliefs, Especially by word of mouth 2. the body of customs, thought, practices, etc, belonging to particular country, people, family, or institution over a relatively long period 3. a specific custom or practice of long standing 4. a doctrine or body of doctrines regarded as having been established by Christ or the apostles though not contained in Scripture 5. a body of laws regarded as having been handed down from Moses orally and only committed to writing in the 2nd century AD 6. the beliefs and customs of Islam supplementing the Koran, esp as embodied in the Sunna 7. the act of formally transferring ownership of movable property; delivery Let’s further refine our definition: Traditions are the handing down from generation to generation a doctrine or a body of doctrines regarded as having been established by Christ or the apostles though not contained in Scripture, including the body of customs, beliefs, thought, and practices belonging to a particular country, people, family or institution over a relatively long period of time. 1 Notice in our definition that we see the following phrase: … the handing down from generation to generation a doctrine or a body of doctrines regarded as having been established by Christ or the apostles though not contained in Scripture… We can already see the deception in traditions and that deception is evident because these traditions are NOT ANCHORED in SCRIPTURE.

EASTER IN SCOTLAND The Easter weekend starts on Good Friday and marks the end of Lent. Unfortunately, this does not always mean a day off work. Easter takes place in spring, this is the so-called "moving holiday", which means that the exact date of Easter Sunday changes every year and can fall every Sunday between March 22 and April 25. This year it falls on April 12. For Scots, these holidays are mainly limited to Easter Sunday. According to the current tradition, on this day, the whole family eats a festive Christmas dinner. Easter is celebrated here completely differently than in Poland. For Easter Scots, it is before all a period of very active rest, trips, visiting local attractions and participating in outdoor activities. Easter dishes • Like other major holidays, Easter has its own culinary traditions that Scottish families have been sticking to for many years. In this regard, it is the same as with us. Surely each family has its own unique recipe for preparing a festive meal. Roast Lamb • Roast lamb as the main meal is something that cannot be done in Scotland without. Simnel Cake This cake is filled with fruits, spices and also covered with marzipan. Traditional cakes also have 11 marzipan balls on the top layer, which represent the 11 apostles Hot cross buns • Hot Cross Buns are sweet rolls filled with raisins or currants, marked with a cross on top. History has it that they were invented by a monk who was inspired to celebrate Good Friday by laying on his crucifixes. What does Easter look like in Scotland? • In Scotland, as in our country, eggs are the most important element of Easter.

Easter customs Since its origins, Easter has been a time of celebration and feasting and many Traditional Easter games and customs developed, such as egg rolling, egg tapping, Pace egging and egg decorating. Today Easter is commercially important, seeing wide sales of greeting cards and confectionery such as chocolate Easter eggs, marshmallow bunnies, Peeps, and jelly beans. Even many non-Christians celebrate these aspects of the holiday while eschewing the religious aspects. Easter customs in English-speaking world Marshmallow bunnies and candy eggs in an Easter basket. In some cultures rabbits, which represent fertility, are a symbol of Easter. Throughout the English-speaking world, many Easter traditions are similar with only minor differences. For example, Saturday is traditionally spent decorating Easter eggs and hunting for them with children on Sunday morning, by which time they have been mysteriously hidden all over the house and garden. Other traditions involve parents telling their children that eggs and other treats such as chocolate eggs or rabbits, and marshmallow chicks (Peeps), have been delivered by the Easter Bunny in an Easter basket, which children find waiting for them when they wake up. Many families observe the religious aspects of Easter by attending Sunday Mass or services in the morning and then participating in a feast or party in the afternoon. Some families have a traditional Sunday roast, often of either roast lamb or ham. Easter breads such as Simnel cake, a fruit cake with eleven marzipan balls representing the eleven faithful apostles, or nut breads such as potica are traditionally served. Hot cross buns, spiced buns with a cross on top, are traditionally associated with Good Friday, but today are often eaten well before and after.
