ABSTRACT THE PROCESS OF DEVELOPING AND IMPLEMENTING A STATEMENT OF MISSION IN A CHURCH-OWNED INSTITUTION USING THE DE-VAU-GE GESUNDKOSTWERK AS AN EXAMPLE by Wolfgang Manfred Witzig Chair: Walter B. T. Douglas ABSTRACT OF GRADUATE STUDENT RESEARCH Project Report Andrews University Seventh-day Adventist Theological Seminary Title: THE PROCESS OF DEVELOPING AND IMPLEMENTING A STATEMENT OF MISSION IN A CHURCH-OWNED INSTITUTION USING THE DE-VAU-GE GESUNDKOSTWERK AS AN EXAMPLE Name of researcher: Wolfgang Manfred Witzig Name and degree of faculty chair: Walter B. Douglas, Ph.D. Date completed: August 1991 Problem An organization will only succeed if all its entities contribute to its purpose. With time these entities tend to develop their own objectives, sometimes counteracting the overall mission of the organization. Religious organizations especially seem to encounter this issue. This study examines, in an exemplary way, the purpose of a health-food factory that is owned by the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Germany and attempts to rewrite their statement of mission. Method The project examines the historical background of the factory. It indicates the reasons that led to its founding and the changes that took place in the understanding of its mission since that time. Surveys have been conducted in different environments to establish present expectations towards the company. A study of the literature established the need for a clearly defined statement of mission and its influence on the long-range success of the company. Guidelines for writing a statement of mission were developed. With a representative group of employees the above findings were discussed. This group then developed a new statement of mission within the framework of the overall purpose of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. Results Working through the process of rewriting the mission statement helped the involved people to understand the need for a concise purpose. An awareness was raised of the company's roots and its embodiment in the Seventh-day Adventist church and the production and marketing plans became more customer oriented. The project became a catalyst in making administrators of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Germany more aware of the need for including different entities in the overall strategic planning process. Other institutions of the Seventh-day Adventist Church became interested and began the same process. Conclusion The need for a mission statement that is compatible with the overall purpose of the parent company is generally understood. But there is a great reluctance by managers and administrators to adjust their hidden agendas to the overall mission. Jackson Lears And approved by _____________________________ _____________________________ _____________________________ _____________________________ New Brunswick, New Jersey OCTOBER, 2013 ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION Magic Bean: The Quests That Brought Soy into American Farming, Diet and Culture by MATTHEW D. ROTH Dissertation Director: T.J. Jackson Lears In 1900, the soybean was a nonentity in American farming. By 2000, 87 million metric tons were grown each year and soy was the country’s most valuable agricultural export. A less concrete but perhaps more telling difference was the soybean’s increased presence in American culture: in 1900, a small number of Asian immigrants, adventuresome farmers, and agricultural researchers thought about soybeans on a regular basis. By 2000, that number had expanded to include chemical, nutritional and medical researchers; commodities traders; lobbyists; vegetarians and millions more buying tofu or soy health-foods; sufferers of soybean allergies; and countless others. Magic Bean charts the diverse paths of the soybean into American farming, diet and culture over the course of the twentieth century. These pathways were enmeshed in systems of knowledge and cultural transfer that themselves underwent enormous transformations in that time: immigrant networks, missionary enterprises, agricultural science, laboratory chemistry, commodities markets, spiritual pilgrimages, and marketing techniques.

  • An Exploration of the Seventh-Day Adventist Experience in Republican China
The Missionaries and the Guomindang: An exploration of the Seventh-day Adventist Experience in Republican China Ruth Crocombe BEd (History), Graduate Diploma in Applied Linguistics (TESOL), Post-graduate Diploma in Arts (History). A thesis submitted for the degree of Master of Philosophy at The University of Queensland in 2015 School of Historical and Philosophical Inquiry 1 ABSTRACT Seventh-day Adventists were late entrants to the China mission field, arriving in China in the first decade of the 20th century. Despite this late start however, by the 1920s the Seventh-day Adventist church had established a large network of schools and hospitals across China. In addition to providing educational and medical services free (or at low cost) to the poor, the medical institutions also serviced wealthy fee paying patients. Much of the initial contact between Seventh-day Adventist missionaries and prominent Guomindang officials and other members of the societal elite originated at the Adventist Shanghai Sanitarium and Hospital. Seventh-day Adventist medical centres in other cities also served this function. As a result Adventist missionaries became acquainted with numerous Guomindang officials and other members of the political elite. Although there is a wealth of popular literature produced by Seventh-day Adventists relating to the activities of the denomination in China, as noted above, there has been little academic study. Specifically, the personal relationships between Western Seventh-day Adventist missionaries and members of the Nationalist government, and the denomination’s representation of Chiang Kai-shek and the Guomindang have not been studies by historians. This thesis is the first scholarly work to focus on the Seventh-day Adventist church’s work in Nationalist China and the first to examine the impact which the church’s writings about China had on the global Seventh-day Adventist community.
