Cablefax Dailytm Thursday — January 9, 2020 What the Industry Reads First Volume 31 / No
www.cablefaxdaily.com, Published by Access Intelligence, LLC, Tel: 301-354-2101 Cablefax DailyTM Thursday — January 9, 2020 What the Industry Reads First Volume 31 / No. 006 Quick Bites: Quibi Not ‘Shrinking TV’ For Mobile Viewing In just over a year, short-form content streamer Quibi has been able to raise $1bln in funding while receiving the back- ing of major Hollywood studios, but are consumers ready to embrace the app? CEO Meg Whitman and founder Jeffrey Katzenberg used the company’s CES keynote Wednesday to dispel any consumer skepticism regarding Quibi, calling it the world’s first mobile-only premium entertainment platform. “Mobile phones are the most widely-distributed, democra- tized entertainment platform the world has ever seen,” Katzenberg said. The idea behind the platform is to deliver movie- quality experiences in quick bites (known as Quibis) for Millennial and Gen Z audiences that take advantage of all of the capabilities modern smartphones offer. To do so, Quibi had to tackle the usual challenges that come with mobile viewing, including the inability to watch content in both portrait and landscape modes. “It means creating a technology platform optimized for people on the go and giving them a great entertainment experience in those in-between moments,” Whit- man said. “We’re not shrinking TV onto phones. We’re creating something new.” Chief product officer Tom Conrad took to the stage to unveil Turnstyle, a new way to watch that allows viewers to move between a full-screen landscape mode and a full-screen portrait mode experience at any time. Conrad illustrated Turnstyle by showing the short film “Nest.” When the phone was held in portrait mode, viewers were able to see an intruder trying to break into a woman’s house through her Google Nest doorbell camera. -

Achieving "The Franchise": the Comcast-Nbc Universal Merger and the New Media Marketplace
ACHIEVING "THE FRANCHISE": THE COMCAST-NBC UNIVERSAL MERGER AND THE NEW MEDIA MARKETPLACE Thomas Curtint I. INTRODUCTION In 1997, then-Chairman of the Federal Communications Commission ("FCC" or "Commission") Reed Hundt delivered a speech to the leaders of the cable industry in which he described the future of cable television in terms of what he called "the Franchise."' According to Hundt, this model "consists of the core package of the most popular TV channels and the most popular way to deliver them." Hundt acknowledged that the cable industry "has made huge inroads on the delivery side," and classified broadcast television as "the other side of the Franchise." 2 The Chairman further forecasted that "the core pro- gramming package may or may not be possessed by local broadcasters in the future."' Nearly thirteen years after Chairman Hundt foretold an all-in-one entertain- ment content and delivery service, the Comcast Corporation ("Comcast") is on its way to realizing this vision of "the Franchise," as the media delivery giant undertakes efforts to merge with NBC Universal.' If successful, the merger would give the nation's largest cable corporation control over NBC Univer- t J.D. Candidate, May 2011. Hulu, to Be Or Not to Be
Case #6-0030 Hulu, to be or not to be Los Angeles-based Hulu.com had finished 2008 with impressive growth in both viewership growth and market visibility. The video portal startup, established in 2007 with the backing of NBC Universal and News Corp., had 227 million video views and had become the sixth most visited online video web site. Popular media had taken notice and prominently featured the company. Even the harshest Hulu skeptics, like Michael Arrington of the popular TechCrunch blog, acknowledged its success.1 But Jason Kilar, the CEO, was cautious about the future. Despite a stellar year, Kilar was concerned about the dynamics in the industry. He had been hired away from Amazon as an outsider to the media industry just over a year ago. At Amazon, Kilar had played a key role in its expansion into home video. He had joined Hulu on the promise that he would be allowed to run the company as an independent startup and not a simple offshoot of the big media conglomerates. Despite, or perhaps because of, this separate existence he had to negotiate aggressively and work through many roadblocks to get the variety of media content now available on Hulu. He reflected on the inherent tension between NBC’s and Fox’s current TV and DVD businesses and the on-demand online video offerings of Hulu. Although NBC and Fox had been cooperative so far, Kilar understood the risk of having a business model that was merely a channel for their content with little negotiating power. Growing viewership and buzz helped Kilar’s independent position and the growth needed to be nurtured. -
Paula Madison Executive Vice President, Diversity & Chief Diversity Officer, NBC Universal Company Officer, General Electric
Paula Madison Executive Vice President, Diversity & Chief Diversity Officer, NBC Universal Company Officer, General Electric Paula Madison is the Executive Vice President of Diversity for NBC Universal and a Company Officer for GE. In May 2007, NBC Universal President and CEO Jeff Zucker appointed her as the company’s chief diversity officer. When the announcement was made, it was the first time in the history of NBC Universal that a senior executive has had diversity as his or her sole responsibility. As the liaison between the company and key national and local leaders, Paula also serves as the diversity spokesperson for NBC Universal. Paula is responsible for working with the company’s business executives to ensure the organization is an industry leader in developing the programs and culture that will enable the company to better reflect the makeup of its increasingly diverse, globally-based customers, clients and audiences. This appointment speaks not only to the critical importance of diversity as a strategic priority for NBC Universal, but is a testament to Paula’s rich history in the media marketplace and tireless leadership in this arena. Paula’s rise to this historic position began shortly after graduating from Vassar College. She worked as a newspaper reporter in New York and Dallas/Fort Worth. After a few years at television stations in Texas and Oklahoma, Paula returned to her native New York City by joining NBC's owned and operated station WNBC in 1989 as Assistant News Director. Paula rose to be the station's Vice President and News Director in March 1996.
