Sankta Sunniva – Er Hun En Historisk Person? Den hellige Sunniva var sentralmotiv på alterskapet i Austevoll kirke i Hordaland. Masteravhandling i kristendomskunnskap (60 stp) NLA Høgskolen, Bergen Våren 2013 Kari Berle Nilsen 2 Sammendrag Målet for denne avhandlingen er å undersøke om vi med sikkerhet kan vite at Sankta Sunniva, helgenen som i den katolske kirken i Norden i dag minnes 8. juli, er en historisk person. Sankta Sunniva flyktet i følge legenden fra Irland sammen med flere av sine landsmenn og strandet på øya Selja. Der levde disse fromme kristne en tid inntil de ble beskyldt for å stjele sauer. Da Håkon jarl og flere av hans menn kom for å drepe dem, ble de på bønn til Gud reddet av et ras der de omkom. To handelsmenn fant en lysende hodeskalle på øya, og senere ble menneskeben funnet i raset av kong Olav Tryggvason og biskopen hans. De fikk bygget en kirke der, og siden ble i følge legenden Sunniva også funnet hel og uskadd. Hun ble lagt i et skrin, som i 1170 ble flyttet til Kristkirken i Bergen. Vårt utgangspunkt er at Sunniva er en historisk person slik hun er skildret i den latinske legenden, en legende som er satt sammen ved hjelp av fire bevarte kilder. To norrøne versjoner av legenden finnes også, den ene skrevet av islandske Odd munk, og bevart i to håndskrifter, den andre skrevet på Island som en del av Flateyjarbok, en bok som er bevart den dag i dag. Vi har sammenliknet disse tre legendeversjonene både ved å se på vekten av legendenes fem hovedhendelser (narrative element) og ved hjelp av en synopse, der vi har tilpasset Odds narrative rekkefølge til den latinske legendes struktur. Den latinske legenden vektlegger Sunniva i mye større grad enn de norrøne, og denne legenden bærer et sterkt preg av å være en liturgisk tekst. Den latinske legendens funksjon er trosformidling gjennom Sunnivas liv og martyrium, mens de norrøne legenders funksjon er å presentere Olav Tryggvason som helgen. Sunnivalegenden har lav kildeverdi som historisk beretning. Kilder for kulten rundt Sunniva og de hellige på Selja: I de fire eldste norske landskapslovene finnes betegnelsen Seljemannamesse, mens Sunniva først kom in i lovverket i 1276, ikke før på siste del av 1300-tallet var Seljemannamesse erstattet av Sta. Sunniva. Andre kilder for kulten er bønner, hymner og mirakelberetninger, f.eks. gjengitt i Breviarium Nidrosiense. Det fantes relikvier av Sunniva flere steder i Norge og i Norden. Til sammen 23 ikonografiske Sunniva-fremstillinger vitner om en utbredt Sunniva-kult, spesielt i tiden før reformasjonen i 1537. I senmiddelalderen var 8. juli en av de største festdagene i landet, og kulten hadde spredt seg til hele Norden og Nord-Tyskland. Også helgen- anlegget, kirkene og benediktinerklosteret på Selja vitner om en flere hundre år gammel kult på øya. Sunnivalegenden har blitt sammenliknet med legenden om Ursula, om Modwenna og om Donnán. Det er mange likhetspunkt, men Sunnivalegenden har også mange detaljer som den er alene om, f.eks. at Gud sender raset for å redde dem. Parallellitet betyr ikke nødvendigvis avskrift. Faktorer som har blitt diskutert i forbindelse med alderen på Sunnivakulten er: Eksistensen av en eldre tradisjonskjerne i legenden, landskapslovenes bruk av betegnelsen Seljemannamesse, Sunniva- navnets opprinnelse, Adam av Bremens scholion 145, opprettelsen av bispedømme på Selja, kirkens behov for en helgen og kongemaktens behov for å bli legitimert på 1100-tallet, og Orø-korset. De fleste av disse faktorene brukes for å forfekte en sen datering for kulten rundt Sunniva. Er Sunniva en historisk person? Etter en vurdering av påstanden om to tradisjonslag i legenden, av vektleggingen av Sunniva i den latinske legenden og i Bergen bispedømme, og av andre faktorer, konkluderer vi med at hun tidlig kan ha vært med i legenden, men at vi likevel ikke med sikkerhet kan vite at Sunniva var en historisk person ut fra det kildematerialet vi i dag kjenner. Vi tror ikke at hun er tatt inn i legenden av kirkepolitiske årsaker eller på grunn av kongemaktens behov. Å velge å tro at hun har levd, er et valg som hører til innenfor troens rom, og kan ikke etterprøves vitenskapelig. 3 Innhold Sammendrag Eric Stavney Mukilteo, WA Along the rugged coast of Western Norway lie thousands of desolate, rocky islands. Just north of Måloy, near the mouth of the Nordfjord in Sildegapet Bay, is a hilly green island that at first glance appears just alike. But this island, called Selje (or Selja), holds a secret that makes it a unique and significant island in the history of Norway. Few would suspect that this island, measuring only a mile or so across at its widest, played a central role in the early history of the Christian church in Norway. The secret of Selje Island is found on the flatlands of the western, seaward, side. Hidden from the mainland, ruins of an ancient stone building stand silently on a green plain. The broken marble walls define a large building with many rooms, now open to the sky. Rising up out of the ruins is a four-sided tower with a peaked roof and windows near the top. Within the tower, a set of crude stone stairs winds up into an attic room, where windows in each wall look out in all four directions. A short distance from the tower building a series of steps and terraces cut into the hillside lead up to the high cliffs overlooking the plain. The steps end abruptly under the cliffs in a small cave in the hillside.

Upton Denver, Colorado The paper uses methods from medieval sermon studies to argue that an insularity in “monastic consciousness” can be traced to earlier centuries than the more generally discussed (and better documented) scholastic environments of 13th century monastic and cathedral schools. It assesses how a monastic discourse reliant on Biblical typologies informed the Christian conversion of northern Germanic and Scandinavian peoples (c. 500-1300, including the British Isles and Iceland). Moments of encounter between Christian missionaries and pagan cultures helped delineate this discourse, most apparent in extant records that reveal Christian and Norse perceptions of geography, holy places, deity worship, and eschatological expectations.

    SUNNIVALEIA FROM BERGEN TO SELJE Gulatinget and the Millstone-quarries in Hyllestad are two more central Selja Kloster historic sites on the western coast of Norway. The activities here took place in an age of conflict resulting in great changes to society: the trans- SUNNIVALEIA ition from the time of the vikings to the Middle Ages. Gulatinget, the Millstone-quarries, the Selja Monastery and the Kinn Church, have all played an important role in allowing Christianity to gain a foothold in this – a pilgrimage over land and water country. on the west coast of Norway THE GULATING was a legal assembly held annually in Gulen between AD 900 and 1300. Here chieftains, men of distinction and free men owning farmland met BERGEN ∙ KINN ∙ SELJE to discuss problems and attempt to solve them – often by passing rele- vant laws. Gulatinget,was one of the oldest and largest medieval assem- blies in the Nordic region, and Eivindvik seems to have been the site of the assemby. Two large crosses of stone produced in Hyllestad around AD 1000 are still found here. www.gulatinget.no THE MILLSTONEPARK IN HYLLESTAD For more than 1200 years millstones for hand- and watermills have been produced from several quarries in Hyllestad. This large-scale industry started in the beginning of the Viking Ages and continued through the Medieval Ages and up till our time. This commodity was exported to all areas in Norway and to Iceland, Sweden and Denmark as well. Most of the historic stone-crosses along the coast of Norway were made here. The crosses in Korssund, Vilnes and Kinn originate from these quarries.

    St. Elizabeth the New Martyr July 5 Grand Duchess Elizabeth, a grand-daughter of Queen Victoria of England and elder sister of Empress Alexandra of Russia (see July 4), was one of the most illustrious women of her day, known throughout Europe not only for her high birth and graceful beauty, but also for her modesty and goodness of heart. After marrying Grand Duke Sergius Alexandrovich, she converted to Orthodoxy, although this was not required of her by her position. After the assassination of her husband in 1905, Grand Duchess Elizabeth withdrew from public life, founding the convent of Saints Martha and Mary, of which she became the superior. There she dedicated herself to prayer, fasting, tending the sick, and caring for the poor. After the Bolsheviks seized power, she was exiled to the Urals, where she and those with her were martyred in 1918 when they were cast alive into an abandoned mine. The Novice Barbara followed Saint Elizabeth into exile. When she was separated from the Grand Duchess, Barbara asked to be allowed to join her again; to terrify her, the Bolsheviks told her that she would be allowed to do this, but only if she were prepared for unheard-of torments and a violent death. To their amazement, she consented, and was deemed worthy of martyrdom with the Grand Duchess. Their holy relics were recovered and taken through Russia to China, and came to rest in the Convent of Saint Mary Magdalene in Jerusalem. When their reliquaries were opened in 1981, their bodies were found to be partially incorrupt, and sweet with the odour of sanctity.1 1 www.goarch.org St.

    The Medieval Dioceses of Norway. The Norse Church, in its embryonic period, was, like those of Sweden and Denmark, part of the province of the archbishopric of Hamburg-Bremen.1 But it was an often querulous relationship particularly so since Norway was at an enormous geographical distance from Hamburg - at the outermost limits of the province. Lesley Abrams says that, “the study of Scandinavia’s conversion is a treacherous exercise,” and she concludes that “no Scandinavian conversion history is reliable.”2 A particular problem is that what appears, at first, to be an excellent source, the attractive “Gesta Hammaburgensis Ecclesiae Pontificum,” written by Adam of Bremen in the 1070s, proves itself as a work of propaganda and a very unreliable source of history.3 To understand matters it is best to start with a brief overview of the introduction of Christianity into these northern lands. The Faith arrived first in Denmark. At some point in the 9th-century St Anskar, known as “the Apostle of the North,” became attached to the retinue of Harald, who called himself ‘a king of Denmark’, on the occasion of his baptism at the court of Louis the Pious (only surviving son the Emperor Charlemagne). Anskar, who died in AD 865, was the first Archbishop of Hamburg-Bremen, but his effect on the Scandinavian people was minimal and it was not until the later 10th-century, and the following century, that a real impetus came from England. What we can confidently extract from the written sources is that Norway’s conversion story is tied to a series of kings who were baptized abroad and who then brought the Faith home with them on their return to their own country.
