Marion-Kay Spices is one of those companies in which the presence of the founder looms large even years after his passing. Today, the firm, ensconced in a plant-and-office facility nestled in a valley on the outskirts of Browns- town, ringed by the hills of western Jackson County, supplies its seasonings to large insti- tutional customers across the nation, chefs who swear by its products as they move from one restaurant to another, as well local retail outlets. There’s no escaping the legacy of Marion K. “Bill” Summers, though. Right inside the entrance to the office area is a small museum, which houses the collection of antique cam- eras, 1950s audiovisual equipment and other technological artifacts Summers had amassed. MHis interests were wide-ranging. The

He was so fascinated by clocks that he had the company manufacture them from 1965 until three years after his death. (The next generation of family man- agement decided in 1987 to refocus on the core business of making seasonings.) In 1961, he self-published a book titled “The Vanilla Story.” The scope far exceeds vanilla’s role in the company’s develop- ment. He even self-published a col- lection of the inspirational poems he wrote rather prolifically. The company had been located in the St. Louis area from its 1922 founding until 1949. That’s when Summers, on a camping trip to Brownstown, found the 50,000-square-foot building in which it’s been situated since. His travels to far-flung locales in the next decade set Marion-Kay’s standard for using the finest raw materials possible in creating its spice blends. Long-lasting supply He deemed cinnamon from Vietnam to be the world’s best and was reliably supplied with it until the U.S. imposed an embargo on goods from South Vietnam in 1972. Seeing it coming, Summers brought in one last shipment, of such a size that several bags still sit in a corner of an office. The Malabar peppers Marion-Kay uses come from India’s west coast. The tarragon comes from France. The hulled sesame seeds come from Egypt and Guatemala. Other raw materials come from equally distant locales. The company has used the same New York importer since 1962 to obtain its ingredients. Kordell Reid and Pam Warren are sib- lings and Summers’ grandchildren. They are the current owners and stewards of the company’s vision. Reid moved back from Texas to come on board in 1986. Warren joined after raising her children. One area that makes Pollert stand out is his unique approach to the design process, Arnholt says. “I think his putting what they already have into the process and not having to pur- chase new things all the time is what contributes to the appeal of what he offers,” she says. “People think we only work with high-end clients, but we don’t. Pollert will work with anyone on projects big and small.” As a professional member of the American Society of Interior Design- ers, Pollert has had the opportunity to take his designs beyond Indiana’s bor- ders. Over the years, he has contracted to work on residential projects in other states, including Florida, Michigan and Arizona. Working in another state presents its own issues simply by virtue of the distance. “It is exciting,” he says. “But it is a little more challenging to find re- sources and artisans to get the work done right.” As many businesses are adapting to operating under new parameters with the pandemic, Pollert says his business HGTV and Pinterest offer inspiration Another consequence of relying too has gotten busier as more people have for thousands of projects, but they closely on those sources is the influ- been staying home. Overhead Door Co. of South Central Indiana is ap- proaching the two-year mark of its current era, and it’s surmounted a number of challenges to thrive and set new standards of advancement. Don Schmidt and his wife, Pat, founded the Colum- bus distributorship for the nationally known brand in 1965 and grew a solid business. A few years ago, they began casting about for a buyer. Chuck Wells, a Columbus native, expressed interest, and they likewise were pleased with the direction he envisioned for the company. Wells majored in political science at Butler University, spent some time with the Columbus parks department and then rose through the ranks at Home News Enter- prises (now AIM Media Indiana) to become publisher of The Republic and other newspapers. By age 48, he was interested in going in a more entrepreneurial direction. Pictured: Chuck He assumed ownership of Overhead Door of South Wells Ois owner of Overhead Door Co. Along with Overhead Door, the company distributes McGuire loading docks for com- mercial customers. It serves an 11-county area, spanning from Brown County to Bates- ville east and west, and Whiteland to New Albany north to south. “We have an enormous amount of institu- tional knowledge,” he says. “I’m the benefi- ciary of a lot of expertise.” Michael Corya, the commercial service specialist, has been with the firm over 30 years. Brent Watson, who oversees commer- cial installation, has been there over 25 years. Chief financial officer Leslie Crawhorn has been on board over five years. Wells says she’s been invaluable in helping him understand AFTER the particulars of finance in a door distribu- torship. “Receivables and payables are handled differently in a business like this than they are in a media company,” he notes. “Dale Dixon is the warehouse manager; he makes sure our guys have what they need when they leave every day,” says Wells. Kendall Ping is the fleet and facility manager. Wells admits to a steep learning curve. “When I bought the business, I knew nothing about garage doors, but I sit next to Rick Fields, our operations manager, who is the garage door doctor. I’ve also spent a lot of time in the field with our technicians.” Wells had business cards printed, the back of which outline the core values that drive the firm in its new era: treating others as one would want to be treated; prioritizing safety; taking ownership of every situation; a clean, organized and efficient work environment; and giving back to the community. One thing he’s learned is that “something Overhead Door Co. of always comes up. I had no idea that I’d be dealing with losing three trucks to break- South Central Indiana downs in the first month, or with a car veering off Indianapolis Road into the front address: 1685 N. Indianapolis Road, of our office and commercial warehouse Columbus building, or a flood or a pandemic.” Challenges notwithstanding, progress has phone: 812-379-2358 continued apace. The damage to the building he references website: www.overheaddoorsci.com has been repaired, and a large space upstairs is being customized as a training area and conference room. Training is an ongoing part of life for the staff. Sales people participate in webinars on the latest developments in that area. The

22 The Business Connection | FALL 2020 company has sent four people to a McGuire regional training center in Hot Springs, Arkansas. It qualified, based on a growth criterion, to send four people to the Over- head Door national convention in Scottsdale, Arizona, in 2019. New technology that the company is able to offer includes an app called Overhead Door Anywhere. It enables customers to open their doors remotely. “One reason I bought the business was the strength of the Overhead Door brand,” says Wells. Esprit de corps is a major part of company culture. Once a month, he cooks breakfast for his crews, and there are occasional cookout lunches. Wells says that while he gives some thought to strategic considerations, he keeps most of his focus in the present. “I would never make it in a big company,” he says. “Without intense focus on operations, you won’t be a successful leader. I do have a vision for growing Overhead Door, but there are no buzzwords to tell you what it is.” He says that acquisitions could be part of the picture, but “we’d be careful. There would need to be synergies. How could we help them and how could they help us? We’d want to foster a collaborative spirit. You can’t just walk into a place and say, ‘Here’s how it’s going to be.’” Anthony Valencia While his wife, Suzanne, has a career within Cummins and is not actively involved at Overhead Door, Wells says her accumu- lated experience in areas such as finance, quality, purchasing and engineering is helpful. “How lucky am I to have such a woman to run things by?” He also has an advisory board that had been meeting quarterly until the pandemic. It consists of John Elwood of Elwood Staffing, Brian Hannasch of Couche-Tard, neighbor and friend from college Tony Gambaiani, Tony Bultinck of Watermark Accounting, John McCormick, who owned Kenny Glass for many years, and his attorney, Jeff Beck. “I understand that there are many areas in which I need guidance,” he says. And he knows that he’s stewarding a legacy. “This company has built a solid reputation over many years,” he says. “Now we need to Rick Fields make more people aware of that reputation.”
