As you will have noticed, for the fi rst time this catalogue is coming out under the Bloomsbury name instead of the separate Continuum and Bloomsbury Academic imprints. We wanted to give you some background to this rebranding: in 2008, Bloomsbury decided to invest in building a new academic division. Growth since that decision was taken has been very rapid; we now publish around 1,100 titles each year, with a particularly big presence in the Humanities and Social Sciences, and our backlist comprises some 20,000 titles. The purchase of Continuum in 2011 was a key part of this growth. We believe we are stronger as a group, which is why we have taken the strategic decision to adopt the Bloomsbury name for all academic titles that we publish. The values of Continuum, Berg and our other imprints, which you have appreciated over the years, are already integral to the larger entity that is LETTER FROM THE EDITOR THE LETTER FROM Bloomsbury. Much has changed over the past 2 years, but we remain as committed to our authors and to publishing the same high quality textbooks, course books, and research. In this catalogue, we are excited to announce some very important new titles. We’ve re-launched the 33 1/3 series under the Bloomsbury name and will be releasing 20 new volumes on new albums over the next two years. First up, in October 2013, is a brilliant book by Darran Anderson on Serge Gainsbourg’s Histoire de Melody Nelson shortly followed by Phillip Crandall’s diligently-researched take on Andrew W.K.’s cult classic, I Get Wet. Finally, we are delighted to promote our global Bloomsbury website: www.bloomsbury.com. This site brings together everything under the Bloomsbury Group, including Continuum, Berg, Methuen Drama, Arden Shakespeare, T&T Clark, Bristol Classical Press, and A&C Black titles. The site features enhanced academic functionality such as online previews, digital inspection copies, textbook companion sites and online resources. Go to www.bloomsbury.com/academic for more information. I hope you enjoy reading our latest catalogue. The book frames recent experimental composition as a deviant kind of sound art whose a ective and formal elements refl ect on current issues in contemporary culture, and o ers analyses of musical works and performance practices that are rarely heard, let alone considered as signifi cant cultural phenomena - showing the role that obscurity and the esoteric have in articulating current cultural realities. Ambitious in content and experimental in its approach, Boring Formless Nonsense will challenge and fracture your views on failure, creativity, and experimental music. ELDRITCH PRIEST is a composer, writer and co-artistic director of the experimental music collective Neither/Nor. Priest’s essays on musical aesthetics and avant-garde poetics have appeared in various academic journals including Postmodern Culture, Radical Musicology and Mosaic. While the eyes may lead to the soul, the mouth exposes the vitality of the body. Examining the movements of the mouth, or what LaBelle terms “micro-oralities,” this book considers the relation of voice and mouth, suggesting that the importance of voicing is inextricably bound to the exertions of the oral. Though denied by its author as the source of his inspiration, what musical work has strong resemblance to the story of a mythical village called Germelshausen that fell under a curse and appears for only one day every century? Brigadoon by Alan Jay Lerner and music by Frederick Loewe The story involves two American tourists who stumble upon Brigadoon, a mysterious Scottish village that appears for only one day every hundred years. Tommy, one of the tourists, falls in love with Fiona, a young woman from Brigadoon. Lerner, however, denied that he had based the book on an older story and stated that he didn't learn of the existence of the Germelshausen story until after he had completed the first draft of Brigadoon. 156. In December 1971, Frank Zappa and The Mothers of Invention were playing in a concert when the casino venue they were in caught fire due to an over-zealous member of the audience firing a a flare gun into the rattan covered ceiling. This is the true origin story of what rock classic? "Smoke on the Water" by Deep Purple The resulting fire destroyed the entire casino complex, along with all the Mothers' equipment. The "smoke on the water" that became the title of the song (credited to bass guitarist Roger Glover, who related how the title occurred to him when he suddenly woke from a dream a few days later) referred to the smoke from the fire spreading over Lake Geneva from the burning casino as the members of Deep Purple watched the fire from their hotel.

  • Aesthetics, Taste, and the Mind-Body Problem in American Independent Comics
PAPER TOWER: AESTHETICS, TASTE, AND THE MIND-BODY PROBLEM IN AMERICAN INDEPENDENT COMICS William Timothy Jones A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS May 2014 Committee: Jeremy Wallach, Advisor Esther Clinton © 2014 William Timothy Jones All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Jeremy Wallach, Advisor Comics studies, as a relatively new field, is still building a canon. However, its criteria for canon-building has been modeled largely after modernist ideas about formal complexity and criteria for disinterested, detached, “objective” aesthetic judgment derived from one of the major philosophical debates in Western thought: the mind-body problem. This thesis analyzes two American independent comics in order to dissect the aspects of a comic work that allow it to be categorized as “art” in the canonical sense. Chris Ware’s Building Stories is a sprawling, Byzantine comic that exhibits characteristically modernist ideas about the subordination of the body to the mind and art’s relationship to mass culture. Rob Schrab’s Scud: The Disposable Assassin provides a counterpoint to Building Stories in its action-heavy stylistic approach, developing ideas about the merging of the mind and the body and the artistic and the commercial. Ultimately, this thesis advocates for a re -evaluation of comics criticism that values the subjective, emotional, and the popular as much as the “objective” areas of formal complexity and logic. iv ACKNOWLEDGMENTS To Anna O’Brien, for the original germ of this idea and hours of enlightening conversation and companionship. To Jeremy Wallach and Esther Clinton, whose emphatic response to the paper that eventually became this thesis was instrumental to my belief in the quality of my work.

The reclusive new wave band usually doesn't tour much as original founder Mark Mothersbaugh has since moved on to creating commercials and soundtracks at his Los Angeles production company Mutato Muzika (that fantastically weird space-ship-looking building on Sunset Boulevard) along with the other Devo members save Jerry Casale who has been directing videos for such bands as the Foo Fighters and Soundgarden. However, this summer Devo got together and played limited dates all across the country--and this fall they released Live 1980, a full-length concert video shot at the Phoenix Theatre in Petaluma, CA on August 17, 1980. Complete with white uniforms, blue background screen and "energy domes" (don't you dare call them flower-pot hats), Devo play the hits off of their albums, Q: Are We Not Men? A: We are Devo!, Duty Now For the Future and Freedom of Choice. Twenty-one songs are featured in this 75-minute disc including the classic MTV staple "Whip It", the oft-covered "Girl U Want", and their own covers of Johnny River's classic "Secret Agent Man" and the Rolling Stones "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction".

  • Andrew W.K. Talks New DVD, LP, and Talks, and Talks
Andrew W.K. Talks New DVD, LP, and Talks, and Talks Amy Phillips reports: What does Andrew W.K. enjoy more than partying hard? TALKING HARD. When Pitchfork got the jolly headbanger on the phone recently, all I intended to discuss was his new DVD, Who Knows?: Live in Concert 2000-2004, due in stores today, February 7, and the state of his upcoming album. But Andrew had a lot more on his mind. It started with a few simple questions about his forthcoming third LP. "We'll have it complete by the end of March, and we're going to release the album first in Japan, and the rest of the world after that," W.K. said. "I'm taking about 20 songs in, and we'll see what comes out. I would hope that all 20 songs are going to be heard at some point or another." Right now, two of those 20 songs, "Kicks and Bricks" and "You Will Remember Tonight", can be heard on the Andrew W.K. website. The former cut sounds a bit hip- hop-influenced to me, so I asked Andrew about it. "I think that it depends on what kind of context you approach certain types of rhythms with in mind," he said. "I was really looking to syncopate more with that song and allow the beat to have more holes in it. In rap, in funk, in soul, the performers and the songwriters will leave room for movement, and I was trying to leave more room in that song to move around to the beat." OK, fair enough.

Half of the material here is not only previously unreleased - it had never been heard, even by the most dedicated collectors of Wyatt rarities. Until reappearing, seemingly out of nowhere, last year, the demo for “Rivmic Melodies”, an extended sequence of song fragments destined to form the first side of the second album by Soft Machine (the band Wyatt had helped form in 1966 as drummer and lead vocalist, and with whom he had recorded an as-yet unreleased debut album in New York the previous spring), was presumed lost forever. As for the shorter song discovered on the same acetate, “Chelsa”, it wasn't even known to exist! This music was conceived by Wyatt while off the road during and after Soft Machine's second tour of the US with the Jimi Hendrix Experience, first in New York City during the summer of 1968, then in the fall of that year while staying at the Experience's rented house in California, where he was granted free access to the TTG recording facility during studio downtime.
