Items not included will be published in the next edition. From the Director... The academic year 2004/2005 was a particularly full one. We welcomed Claudia Rankine to the faculty; we participated in the inaugural course for the new Cynthia Woods Mitchell Center for Col- laboration among the Arts; and on April 16, 2005, we hosted a celebration of the UH Creative Writ- ing Program’s 25th anniversary. This year we will welcome Kimiko Hahn to the poetry faculty and welcome Patricia Powell in the Fall and Peter Turchi in the Spring as visiting professors of fiction. And 19 new students will join the program: 10 in poetry; 8 in fiction, and 1 in non-fiction. In 2005/2006 we will address the undergraduate concentration in Creative Writing; we will work with the Graduate Studies Program to reform our graduate programs; and we will continue our ef- forts to build a strong and effective alumni association. It was especially gratifying in April to visit with alumni and former faculty. It allowed us the op- portunity to recognize the special contributions of some of our former faculty, to acknowledge people in the community who have generously supported the program over the years, and to ac- claim the achievements of our alumni. -

For further information contact the UOW Library: [email protected] [Review] Hippie Hippie Shake by Richard Neville Abstract The 60s, ew are constantly told, were a time of rebellion, a time of change, a time of hope, or just a self- indulgent game of the "me" generation, depending on point of view. The 60s ra e currently decried by a younger generation, jealous of the alleged freedoms and actions of the baby boomers who have supposedly left them nothing to inherit but the wind. Revisionist writers go to extraordinary lengths to debunk the mythology of the 60s, but in essence they mainly rail against the late 60s early 70s. In their attacks on the baby boomers they conveniently forget that the oldest of this demographic grouping was only 14 in 1960, and the vast majority of them were not even teenagers! America in Revolt: the Art of Protest
AMERICA IN REVOLT: THE ART OF PROTEST February 3nd – February 27th, 2016 Private View: Tuesday, February 2nd, 6 – 8.30pm Shapero Modern is delighted to present AMERICA IN REVOLT: THE ART OF PROTEST, an exhibition of original posters and artwork created by students and activists during the landmark ‘Berkeley demonstrations’ in California in the early 1970s. Drawn from the archive of the late publisher Felix Dennis, and curated by the revered writer and counterculture historian Barry Miles, the collection is comprised of more than 150 posters, each one capturing the incendiary spirit of that time. While the demonstrations were initially sparked by the massacre of four unarmed student protesters at Kent State University by the Ohio National Guard on May 4th, 1970, they were also a response to the reinstatement of the military draft by President Nixon, and the escalation of the Vietnam War into Cambodia. AMERICA IN REVOLT: THE ART OF PROTEST is made up of 50 works from the Felix Dennis collection, which was recently acquired by Shapero Rare Books. All of the posters demonstrate the swift organisation of the student body. Just days after the Kent State shooting, the Berkeley Political Poster Workshop, made up of art, design and political students, took over a small space donated by a sympathetic contingent of the faculty. Here they quickly disseminated their message through an ad-hoc production line. Posters were silkscreened onto recycled computer paper and psychedelic calendars; others went straight onto cardboard to be used immediately at demonstrations. Only a few of each of these posters were made and most did not survive, such was their immediate necessity. -
