KARIPUNAS” E “BRASILEIROS” A TRAJETÓRIA DE DOIS TERMOS Uma contribuição à história indígena da região do baixo Rio Oiapoque Antonella Maria Imperatriz Tassinari GT: Etnologia Indígena XXI Encontro Anual da ANPOCS Caxambu, 27 a 31 de outubro de 1998. “KARIPUNAS” E “BRASILEIROS” A TRAJETÓRIA DE DOIS TERMOS 1 “... a objetivação etnonímica inside primordialmente sobre os outros , não sobre quem está em posição de sujeito. Os etnônimos são nomes de terceiros, pertencem à categoria do ‘eles’, não à categoria do ‘nós’ .” (Viveiros de Castro 1996:126). Este paper é dedicado à história da população Karipuna do Rio Curipi, região do Baixo Oiapoque, Norte do Amapá, de um ponto de vista externo ao grupo, através de uma análise sobre a trajetória de seu etnônimo 2. A história dessa população é quase inteiramente desconhecida, embora haja vasta documentação histórica sobre a região em que habita (Caetano da Silva 1861, Paranhos 1898,1945). Há citações sobre os Caripous na região do Oiapoque no século XVII, mas este etnônimo deixa de aparecer nas fontes do século seguinte (embora seja citado em diversas regiões da Amazônia), para ressurgir no século XIX. Alguns autores consideram que a população do Curipi formou-se por refugiados da Cabanagem (Coudreau 1893, Arnaud 1989a, 1996), deslocando a história do grupo, da região do Oiapoque, para a costa paraense. Considero que, para melhor compreender a história vivenciada por esta população, é preciso fazer uma distinção entre a trajetória de seu etnônimo, e as diversas trajetórias de vida dos atuais Karipuna e de seus antepassados. Isso porque o termo nem sempre esteve associado à população do Curipi (às famílias que ali habitam e seus antepassados, ou a outras famílias ali residentes em momentos diversos) e fazer esta separação será útil para entender o próprio significado que hoje tem o nome Karipuna, referindo-se à identidade étnica atualmente compartilhada pela população do Rio Curipi. -

This revision entails (1) the correction of a num- ber of forms, and the elimination of others, on the basis of criticism by specialists in various Amerind languages; (2) the consolidation of certain Amerind subgroup etymologies (given in Greenberg 1987) into Amerind etymologies; (3) the addition of many reconstructions from different levels of Amerind, based on a comprehensive database of all known reconstructions for Amerind subfamilies; and, finally, (4) the addition of a number of new Amerind etymologies presented here for the first time. The Ten Tonemes of Ticuna, an Amazonian Oddity
January 2018 – Talk abstract for AMAZÓNICAS VII The ten tonemes of Ticuna, an Amazonian oddity Ticuna is a language isolate spoken by an approximate 50,000 ethnic Ticunas in Western Amazonia, across the borders of Peru, Colombia and Brazil. The language’s unusually rich toneme inventory, consisting of 10 contrastive units in stressed syllables and 5 in unstressed syllables, makes it exceptional from both a typological and an areal point of view. Except for epenthetic syllables, each and every Ticuna syllable is lexically attached one toneme – which in specific morphosyntactic contexts may automatically alternate with some other toneme. No complex sandhi-like realization rules apply: each toneme, whether lexical or morphosyntactically conditioned, is always realized as its corresponding tone in the syllable it belongs to. A relatively straightforward phonological analysis of firsthand data from the San Martín de Amacayacu (SMA; Colombia) variety collected in 2015-2017 yields the following toneme inventory: Toneme inventory in stressed syllables in unstressed syllables 36 pitch 5 pitch 52 — 4 — 34 — 3 — 43 — 1 — 33 — creaky voice phonation1 31 — 22 — 21 — terminal creaky voice phonation1 initial creaky voice — TABLE 1 | SMA Ticuna toneme inventory (N.B.: 6 = highest F0; 1 = lowest F0) A comparably rich analysis probably holds for other Ticuna varieties, among others Caballococha and Cushillococha (Peru) Ticuna (Anderson, 1959, 1962; Skilton, pers. com.). In today’s SMA Ticuna at the very least, there seems to be no way to account for minimal pairs (such as those presented in APPENDIX, TABLE 2) with a more economic toneme inventory (such as Montes, 1995’s pioneering three-toneme analysis based on SMA Ticuna data collected from 1984 onwards). -

Indigenous children and adolescents in an anthropological perspective: rethinking intercultural ethnical conflicts 1 Cristhian Teófilo da Silva Abstract Indigenous children and adolescents in an anthropological perspective: Rethinking about intercultural ethical conflicts This article presents anthropological approaches about the cultural reality of indigenous children and adoles- cents and their differentiated cultural rights in Brazil. The aim is to outline the anthropological perspective on different representa tions that indigenous people have on children and youth, as well as the social problems faced by them, in order to discuss about the ethical conflicts and the att empts to legislate such issues in Brazil. The article also emphasizes the way how issues related to child labor, poverty and infanticide among indige- nous people suffer dist ortions as they are targeted by non-indigenous universalistic morality from a Christian influence. It also points out how some initiatives are st arting to appear in anthropology and bioethics fields, in order to interfere in practices considered morally wrong, although accepted by indigenous populations. Resumo Este artigo apresenta abordagens antropológicas a realidade cultural de crianças e adolescentes indígenas e seus direitos culturais diferenciados no Brasil, voltando-se as recentes tenta tivas de regulamentação. Objetiva explicitar a perspectiva antropol ógica sobre as representações diferenciadas que os povos indígenas possuem acerca das crianças e adolescentes e os problemas sociais enfrentados por estas, de modo a problematizar os conflitos éticos interculturais e as suas tenta tivas de normatização em projetos de lei. Também enfatiza como temas relacionados ao trabalho infantil, a pobreza e ao infanticídio entre populações indígenas sofrem distorções ao serem objetivados pela moralidade não indígena universalista e cristianizada. -

The 2010 Brazilian Population Census, conducted by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), im- proved research of the indigenous population, introducing on its ethnic sense, but also the language spoken at home and geograph- ical location, which are indigenous population criteria for identifying in censuses from different countries. The results potentially generated a great knowledge of the existing indigenous diversity in Brazil and a better understanding on the composition of this population segment. In 1991, the category “Indigenous” has been included as one of the options in the color/race question of the Brazilian national censuses. 1991 and 2000 censuses did not identify the each ethnic groups as only used as criterion the generic Indian, leaving to identify more than two hundred groups who inhabited the Brazilian territory. The “indigenous” previously raised by census 1991 and 2000 should not be used as a synonym and not as a substitute for “ethnic groups”, of “indigenous groups” or “indigenous population”, along the lines that predominate in the specialized anthropological literature. In 2010, for the first time in the history, IBGE provided a specific research of the census for the indigenous ethnic groups in the country. -
