A social business financing and training livelihood businesses in Norway 1 Microfinance Norway for increased employment, economic and social integration for women Geografical coverage (since 1996) Five regions – Oslo/Akershus, Drammen (Buskerud), Trondheim (Sør Trødelag), Bergen (Hordaland) and Vesterålen (Nordland) Total: 225 groups of 5 women Programme: The loan fund is closely conncted with Microfinance Norway Association who runs ”The Creative Hub” project as an incubator. Plan to run the same project for women in Vesterålen. Duration of project: 01/04/2014 – 31/12/2020 Implementing agency: Microfinance Norway Association – Owns Microfinance Norway AS Has been working for Entrepreneurs from Ethnic Minorities and women in collaboration with partners for 20 years From our history as NCN before the Name Change in 2010 Based on Grameen Bank principles with group saving and lending among women First loan to Elena Rivas was given by Muhammad Yunus in September 1997. She is still active in business and met Yunus again in March 2015. THE NETWORK GROUP • The group is where thing happen • Makes business plans and evaluates loan – self managed proposals together • Groups consist of 4-7 members • Personal saving of at least 10% of loan • Building social capital – access to financial capital amount • Learning together and motivating • The group decides who will get loans for what each other is the main purpose • Individual loans given in group context – no • Groups define their own by-laws guarantee from group • The group’s needs and interests are important 5 Sunniva Network Group in Hordaland: Turnover 17 mill (€1,9 mill) 6 SOME OF OUR WOMEN CUSTOMERS http://nettradio.nrk.no/default.php?kanal=p2 7 Motivation to start 8 Barriers 9 Socio-economic effects in Nordic perspective Example from the region of Södermanland in Sweden – We expect similar results in Norway as the social situation and welfare system is very similar – no similar research exist in Norway yet.: Expected impact from started enterprises - € 443 833,4 Local level € 98 791,4 Regional level € 42 857,5 National- level € 302 184,5 - New production units - Increased consumption - Paid in taxes etc. - Decreased costs for social benefits According to prognosis made by Swedish Industrial Developement Centre (IUC Sverige AB) Goal: ”Make Women Bankable” To develop a sustainable Micro Finance Institution and create an entrepreneurial infrastructure - Norwegian model Project specific investments Social: To facilitate self employment opportunities to women from marginalised groups in five regions (one region – Follo in Akershus in the ATM for SMEs project) Structural: To establish four Micro Finance regional support centres – “Creative Hubs” and use the Credinfo.no MIS platform to support entrepreneurial women nationwide in the longer run with courses, support services and loans. Financial: To build-up a Microfinance Loan Fund to NOK 50 mill (€6 mill) Results, impact and sustainability of the project results so far... • The first Microfinance (Network Credit) program in Norway started in Lofoten and Vesterålen from 1992 • The projects leading to what is now Microfinance Norway started in 1996 for refugees and immigrants – 50% women. • Transnational cooperation: The Women’s Bank National Network functioned as a nationl network until 2003, but then the remaining groups, became more decentralized and fragmented. Some continued to make regional associations/foundations, but the status now is not very clear. • Microfinance Norway is working to coordinate these groups under one umbrella in the future by offering IT platform/MIS and additional support. Need loacal contact points from the old groups. This work will take many years still National level: Policy dialogue on Micro Finance as an inclusive labour market strategy has been initiated Developed Microfinance outreach methods and tools are exchanged with partners The Microfinance Institute in Sweden Ltd is started by beneficiaries Direct lending permit by Swedish Financial Authorities Regional and local economic perspective: Microfinance courses and mentoring has been going on in five regions, and we hope to carry on this work with more support, establishing Creative Hubs and providing loans with local contact points following up..
