Media Nations 2019
Media nations: UK 2019 Published 7 August 2019 Overview This is Ofcom’s second annual Media Nations report. It reviews key trends in the television and online video sectors as well as the radio and other audio sectors. Accompanying this narrative report is an interactive report which includes an extensive range of data. There are also separate reports for Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales. The Media Nations report is a reference publication for industry, policy makers, academics and consumers. This year’s publication is particularly important as it provides evidence to inform discussions around the future of public service broadcasting, supporting the nationwide forum which Ofcom launched in July 2019: Small Screen: Big Debate. We publish this report to support our regulatory goal to research markets and to remain at the forefront of technological understanding. It addresses the requirement to undertake and make public our consumer research (as set out in Sections 14 and 15 of the Communications Act 2003). It also meets the requirements on Ofcom under Section 358 of the Communications Act 2003 to publish an annual factual and statistical report on the TV and radio sector. This year we have structured the findings into four chapters. • The total video chapter looks at trends across all types of video including traditional broadcast TV, video-on-demand services and online video. • In the second chapter, we take a deeper look at public service broadcasting and some wider aspects of broadcast TV. • The third chapter is about online video. This is where we examine in greater depth subscription video on demand and YouTube. -
INDUSTRY REPORT (AN ARTICLE of ITV ) After My Graduation, My
INDUSTRY REPORT (AN ARTICLE OF ITV ) After my graduation, my ambition is to work in ITV channel, for creating movies for children and applying 3d graphics in news channels is my passion in my life. In this report I would like to study about Itv’s News channel functions and nature of works in ITV’s graphics hub etc. ITV is a 24-hour television news channel in the United Kingdom which Launched in 1955 as Independent Television. It started broadcasting from 1 August 2000 to 23 December 2005. Latterly only between 6:00 am and 6:00 pm when ITV4 cut its hours to half day in 2005 and analogue cable, presenting national and international news plus regular business, sport, entertainment and weather summaries. Priority was usually given to breaking news stories. There was also an added focus on British stories, drawing on the resources of the ITV network's regional newsrooms. As a public service broadcaster, the ITV network is obliged to broadcast programming of public importance, including news, current affairs, children's and religious programming as well as party election broadcasts on behalf of the major political parties and political events. Current ITV Channels: • 1.1ITV • 1.2ITV2 • 1.3ITV3 • 1.4ITV4 • 1.5ITVBe • 1.6ITV Box Office • 1.7ITV Encore • 1.8ITV HD • 1.9CITV Uses of Graphics : 3D Graphics have been used to greatest effect in within news. In what can be a chaotic world where footage isn’t always the best quality news graphics play an important role in striping stories down to the bare essentials. -
Sky's Response to Ofcom's Strategic Review Of
SKY’S RESPONSE TO OFCOM’S STRATEGIC REVIEW OF SATELLITE AND SPACE SCIENCE USE OF SPECTRUM: CALL FOR INPUT 1.1 Sky welcomes the opportunity to comment on Ofcom’s call for input on its strategic review of satellite and space science use of spectrum (“the call for input”). 1.2 Sky is a heavy spectrum user, with activities ranging across many frequency bands. We use spectrum to deliver our services (via satellite, DTT, Wi-Fi and mobile), to create our content (using wireless microphones and cameras and programme links) and to connect our customers (through in-home and public Wi-Fi). 1.3 Our varied use of spectrum makes us well placed to appreciate the tensions between competing applications which make use of scarce spectrum, and the challenges that policymakers may face when considering spectrum allocation in the medium- to long-term. 1.4 Sky strongly supports moves that ensures more efficient use of spectrum, through (for example) the use of newer more advanced and efficient technologies, the application of market forces wherever practical and innovative approaches to allocation and access such as spectrum sharing. This approach is consistent with Ofcom’s general duties as set out in statute, including securing the optimal use of the spectrum and encouraging investment and innovation. 1.5 Sections 2 and 3 of this response provide brief and high level comments on the call for input. In section 4, we provide specific answers to questions that are relevant to Sky. 2. The motivation for Ofcom’s review is unclear 2.1 Ofcom states that the reason for issuing the call for input is “to understand potential demand and supply trends, as well as trends in technology that might mitigate additional demand”1. -

Regional Variation in 140 Characters: Mapping Geospatial Tweets
Regional variation in 140 characters: Mapping geospatial tweets George Bailey University of Manchester @grbails Using Twitter for Linguistic Research - University of Kent, 31st May 2016 What is Twitter? • Social media platform where users post short, 140-character messages called ‘Tweets’ So weird how like a potato can taste so diferent just by cookin it in an oven rather than boiling it - it's the same food #themindboggles • In most cases, Tweets are visible to anyone • You can choose to ‘follow’ other users, so that their Tweets populate your timeline • Noted for viral content, internet memes, early adoption (innovation?) of online slang terms, hashtags etc. 2 Why study it? • Great source of natural language data • more than 500 million tweets sent each day (Twitter 2015) • as of 2013, seven years after its founding, over 170 billion tweets had been sent (Leetaru et al. 2013) • Easy to collect, just leave the script running! • Informal style, which leads to lots of variation and creative use of language • Lots of metadata… 3 Metadata {"created_at":"Mon May 09 07:59:23 +0000 2016","id":729581517257740288,"id_str":"729581517257740288","text":"Dumb idea.
