JOB PURPOSE

The post holder is required to contribute to the day to day running of the Maxillofacial/Orthodontic clinics in the Outpatient General Department (OPD).

To provide chair side surgery assistance for Clinicians in the performance of their range of complex specialisms in Dental, Maxillofacial and Orthodontic treatments.

Provides pre and post operative dental hygiene advice to patients in specialist areas such as and Maxillofacial.

Prepares materials, instruments and equipment for the Dental/Maxillofacial/Orthodontic Practitioner.

KNOWLEDGE, TRAINING & EXPERIENCE REQUIRED TO DO THE JOB

 Registration with the General Dental Council.

 Attend personal review interview at least annually and identify own educational and training needs and incorporate them within the needs of the Directorate and the organisation.

 Attend all mandatory training in accordance with the Hospital programme.  Attend other service training as directed for personal and professional development.  Able to obtain information from the Patient Administration System Medway and Picture Archiving Computer System (PACS) as well as use a word processor.

 Maintain and improve professional knowledge, skills and competence to ensure delivery of evidence based practice in line with the GDC Code of Conduct.

MAIN DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

 In conjunction with the Senior Dental Nurse contribute to the planning, implementation and review of the Maxillofacial/Orthodontic service.

 Contribute to the supervision and training of unqualified Dental Nurses, Dental Nurse Students, Health care assistants (HCA’s) in relation to Maxillofacial/Orthodontic clinics in the OPD setting.

 Provide clinical assistance for a Clinician in the performance of their clinical duties which cover a range of procedures from full mouth dental examinations, minor oral surgery to orthodontics, in an OPD setting.

 Must not, by act or omission, endanger the safety of him / herself or others and must report all untoward occurrences.

 In conjunction with the Senior Dental Nurse be responsible for the management and safe usage of all clinical equipment.

 CLINICAL

 Undertaking surgical assistance in Maxillofacial/Orthodontic & Dental procedures, handling sutures, blades & hyperdermic needles.

 Responsible for the cleaning and sterilisation process of dental instruments in accordance with the Hospital Infection Control Policy.

 Ensure accurate preparation and mixing of dental materials and medicaments which requires a high degree of precision, for correct presentation in accordance with hospital policy/statutory guidance and legislation.

 Undertake the cleaning of the clinic areas, and routine minor maintenance of dental equipment and

 Responsible for maintaining and updating patient’s contact details and maintain an efficient filing system in line with Data protection Act.

 Ensure that the ordering, storage and administration of medicines are in accordance with the Hospital Medicines Policy.

 Promote practice conducive to reducing the risk of cross infection in accordance with the Hospital Infection Control Policy.

 Ensure that the ordering, storage and administration of drugs are in accordance with the “DH Medicine Policy”.

 Incorporate health education and health promotion within clinical practice through providing verbal and written information to patients/carers/visitors.

 Maintain full and accurate clinical records and be aware of the legal implications of these documents.

 TRAINING, EDUCATION & RESEARCH

 In negotiation with the Surgical Outpatient Senior Nurse and/or Senior Dental Nurse ensure that all mandatory training is completed and updated in line with Hospital policy.  Attend in-service training as required.

 Implement policies and procedures.

 Identify, collect and participate in the evaluation of information to support multi-disciplinary decision making.

 Undertake clinical audit in line with National/ organisational audit tools, develop and implement action plans as required from results.

 Under direction and supervision participate in clinical trials in accordance with the procedure of the trial.

 Provides advice and education regarding health promotion to patients/relatives/ carers.

 PLANNING & ORGANISATIONAL SKILLS

 Organise equipment and instruments required for minor oral surgery sessions and clinical procedures.

 As requested by Senior Nurse or Division Manager contribute to or represent the Oral Surgery Department on committees/working groups within the hospital.

 Organise own workload to ensure that the needs of the patients are met.

 Responsible for ensuring own mandatory training is up to date in line with hospital policy.

On occasion, in the absence of the Senior Dental Nurse

 Arrange appointments in conjunction with patients.

 Plan, organise and co-ordinate complex activities such as emergency admission to clinics, theatre emergency slots at short notice.

 Contribute to the planning and co-ordination of care for orthodontic patients.

 COMMUNICATION

On a daily basis:

 Ensure that accurate records are kept and are ongoing whilst treating patients in your care.

 Communicate with other members of the multi disciplinary team to discuss and ensure appropriate treatment is delivered to patients.

 Be empathetic and be able to handle difficult and emotional situations where persons may be angry, confused or distressed.

 Provide and receive sensitive and confidential information by telephone, written, electronically and verbally from all healthcare professionals regarding patient care.

 Expected to utilise effective verbal and non-verbal communication and interpersonal skills with patients / carers / relatives / visitors and healthcare professionals with internal departments and external agencies, e.g. community dental clinics;

 Contributes to the effective efficient day to day operational management of the Maxillofacial/Orthodontic clinic in OPD setting.

 Attend and contribute to Team/Directorate meetings.

 Responsible for the daily servicing of equipment.

 Promote and work within the agreed directorate Philosophy.

 Supervise junior dental staff and act as a source of advice to ensure that their educational needs are met.

 CLINICAL GOVERNANCE

 Assist in the maintenance and monitoring of an acceptable environment for patients, reporting and taking appropriate action on hazards and faulty equipment.

 Participate in the DH framework of Clinical Governance, clinical effectiveness and risk management and participate in delivering the Directorate agenda.

 Be aware of and comply with policies, procedures and guidelines. This will include the identification of risk (clinical, health and safety and security).

 Record and report all incidents/complaints involving staff, patients or visitors and assist in any investigation as patients or visitors and assist in any investigation as required in accordance with the DH Complaints Procedure/Incident Reporting Procedure.

 Comply with the need for patient confidentiality, including requirements of the Data Protection Act.

 Establish and maintain caring relationships with patients and their carers. Respond to any minor complaints promptly and courteously. Ensure that complaints of a more serious nature are dealt with in accordance with Nobles Hospital Complaints procedure taking any immediate action required. Inform the Senior Dental Nurse or Senior Nurse as soon as possible.

 Ensure that all equipment used in the area is maintained and working safely. Also that safe working practices are adhered to in line with Health and Safety Legislation

 Ensure accuracy is maintained in the ordering, storage and administration of medications in accordance with local hospital policy.

 Maintain departmental stock levels, through ordering of stores, ensuring economic use of all resources, keeping records in line with hospital policy and procedures.

 Ensure equipment or instruments used have been properly checked, left clean and ready for use in accordance with the Infection Control Manual / hospital policies.

 DECISIONS & JUDGEMENTS

 Correct use of decontamination and maintenance of autoclaves, x-ray processes, bottled water systems, suction equipment, hand pieces & scalers.

 Exercise own judgement in emergency situations i.e. fire, cardiac arrest, initiate first responses and report to the relevant persons.

 Exercise clinical judgement in response to the deterioration of a patient’s condition ensuring appropriate action is taken.

 Anticipates the needs of the Clinician during all clinical/surgical procedures.

On no account must information relating to identifiable patients be divulged to anyone other than authorised persons, for example, medical, or other professional staff, as appropriate, who are concerned directly with the care, diagnosis and /or treatment of the patient. If you are in any doubt whatsoever as to the authority of a person or body asking for information of this nature, you must seek advice from your manager. Similarly, no information of a personal or confidential nature concerning individual members of staff should be divulged to anyone without the proper authority having first been given. Failure to observe these rules will be regarded by your employers as gross misconduct which could result in disciplinary action being taken against you. In the case of information held on computer systems, you may be held personally liable if you in any way knowingly contravene the appropriate terms of the Data Protection Act 2002.
