JOB IDENTIFICATION Job Title: Dental Nurse in Restorative Dentistry Locations: Inverness Dental Centre CfHS and Raigmore Hospital, Inverness Department: Restorative Dentistry Service Operational Unit/Corporate Department: Raigmore, Surgical Division Job Reference: SSSARAIGDENT13 No of Job Holders: 1 Last Update: August 2015 2 3 2. JOB PURPOSE To carry out Dental Nursing and administrative duties in support of the Restorative Dentistry Service delivered by the Consultant in Restorative Dentistry in NHS Highland and trainees allocated to this service. This post has specific duties and responsibilities related to the care of patients affected by head and neck cancer, dental implants and complex restorative treatment including endodontics, prosthodontics and periodontics. To work as part of a team of Dental Nurses, giving clinical & administrative assistance as required to Clinicians (Consultant and NES trainees). The post will include all duties normally expected of a Qualified Dental Nurse required to provide high quality patient care. To participate in all programmes arranged for the training of Dental Nurses in order to meet agreed quality standards, to maintain awareness of any changes in dentistry and to participate in continuing personal and professional development. To Participate in Audit and research programmes as required. Maintain a high standard of infection control. 3. DIMENSIONS Provision of routine and emergency dental care to a range of adults who are referred to secondary care NHS HIGHLAND Restorative Service in Raigmore. The consultant works multiple sites, including Raigmore Hospital, Inverness Dental Centre, Stornoway and Elgin. The post holder will be required to work flexibly across a variety of services including; Hospital, Public dental services, General Anaesthetic, Relative Analgesia and IV Sedation. The post holder may be required to cover staff absence. 4 5 4. ROLE OF DEPARTMENT The role of the Restorative Dental Service is to provide a diagnostic, treatment planning and advice service to referring practitioners and to carry out specialist level treatment where appropriate. Management of patients requiring the full range of specialist care including the rehabilitation of individuals with congenital and acquired defects. Clinical training of junior staff and trainees in Restorative Dentistry. Development of teaching and training in Restorative Dentistry, particularly across the North of Scotland, and development of a network of dentists with enhanced skills across the regions, to ensure the service model meets the needs of a rural population. Monitor the dental health of the population of Highland Promote dental health. 7 6. KEY RESULT AREAS Clinical Chairside assistance during all procedures, providing support to the consultant, NES trainee in restorative and occasionally the dental hygienist at Raigmore. NHS HIGHLAND Monitor the patient during recovery to check that measurements return to normal. Ensure post- operative instructions have been given. From dentists instruction advise patients on details of treatment and aftercare within level of knowledge. Chart the patient’s oral health status from the dentists’ / dental hygienist’s instructions. Preparation of filling materials, instruments, equipment, dressing and syringes. Safe disposal of hazardous and clinical waste in appropriate container. Includes soft waste contaminated with body fluids (e.g. paper towels, swabs), sharps, waste amalgam, and x-ray developing fluid / fixative. Take, process and mount x-ray films where required. Completion of standard operating procedures in accordance with the NHS Highland X-ray Quality Assurance programme. Clean and sterilise instruments and maintain clinical environment, adhering to Departmental and NHS Highland protocols and procedures. Ensure that prescribed standards of decontamination are met and all documentation completed. Follow all protocols in relation to the central sterilisation of instruments at Raigmore Hospital. Responsible for checking that the correct instruments are on the tray prior to treatment, and for signing the tray off prior to returning it for sterilisation. Maintenance and inspection of surgery equipment and instruments in line with standard operating procedures. Assist patients with mobility difficulties during procedures, adhering to NHS Highland Moving and Handling protocols in order to minimise the risk to staff and the patient. Promotion of good dental health during the patient’s visit, providing oral health advice to patients, carers, staff and parents / guardians. Participate in the development of protocols for specialist dental services where required. Administrative Deal with patient telephone enquiries and liaise with department’s reception/ secretary to issue appointments, maintaining confidentiality at all times. Liaise with PDS and Raigmore reception and laboratory regarding medical notes, appointments, labwork, etc. Liaise with other departments (e.g. OMFS, Orthodontics, Oncology, ENT, Hospital Clinicians) in order to co-ordinate dental treatment and ensure that the appropriate tests are carried out before and during treatment. Ensure patients with dental emergencies receive appropriate prioritisation. Ensure safe storage of dental and hospital medical records, liasing with reception and medical records staff. Transport patient records between clinics as appropriate. Check that consent has been given and the relevant documentation has been completed prior to treatment. Deal with the paperwork associated with dental laboratory work and orders and ensure lab work is available and ready before each clinic. NHS HIGHLAND Processing and reporting of patient complaints/ adverse events, escalating to appropriate department, (Datix). Managing Resources Day to day ordering and stock control of all restorative dental materials. Carry out stock audits where required. Ensure that all dental equipment is maintained regularly, notifying the correct NHS department promptly with regard to faults or problems General Work placement support and guidance to Trainee Dental Nurses working in the clinic. Provision of observational feedback to NES trainees where appropriate. Provide cover for staff absences on approval from the Restorative Consultant. Control overall effectiveness of the department to ensure aims and objectives of the clinics are met. Manage on-going change within the service. 8 7a. EQUIPMENT AND MACHINERY Dental Equipment and instruments; ultrasonic, washer/disinfector, aspirator, LA syringes/cartridges, oxygen cylinders, amalgamators, X-ray- machine/X ray viewer, light curing lamp, sharps and emergency equipment / drugs Specialist Equipment; operating microscope, B-system, Obtura, Implant drilling machine, sterile instrument trays, resuscitation trolley, and other moving & handling equipment, Cavitron, Apex Locator Telephone, answering machine, fax machine, photocopier, PC/Lap top, printer 7b. SYSTEMS Working knowledge of PMS/ TRAK, PACs Working knowledge of Microsoft Office systems (e.g. Word, Outlook) where appropriate 9 10 NHS HIGHLAND 8. ASSIGNMENT AND REVIEW OF WORK The Registered Dental Nurse will be assigned their duties and responsibilities by Divisional Nurse Manager for Surgery. The type of duties carried out may vary in accordance with the day to day requirements of the service. Review of work is measured against set objectives as agreed with line manager at PDPR meetings, using eKSF. The post holder will review their development needs annually with the Senior Dental Nurse, as part of the NHS Highland Personal Development Planning and Review policy. Attendance at Dental Team meetings to discuss service objectives. 11 12 9. DECISIONS AND JUDGEMENTS Stock ordering and control; ensuring that adequate levels of stock are maintained at all times bearing in mind available storage space. The post holder is expected to work autonomously within clinics without the immediate presence of a line manager Possessing the ability to prioritise work load. Dealing with enquiries and complaints from patients, carers, and health care professionals. Knowing when to seek further advice from a senior member of staff. Requirement to anticipate the needs of both patient and clinician and be able to deal with them promptly and efficiently To ensure delivery of care in compliance with patient confidentiality. 13 10. MOST CHALLENGING/DIFFICULT PARTS OF THE JOB Maintaining a positive mental attitude while working. Making quick and effective decisions with regard to the management of the patient, in often stressful and demanding circumstances. Prioritisation of patients in a very busy service where the expectations of the public are high. Communicating with patients for whom English is not the first language and is not easily understood. 14 15 16 11. COMMUNICATIONS AND RELATIONSHIPS The post holder must work well as part of a team of dental support staff. There is a close working relationship between the dental nurse, hygienist and the dentists, working as a pair during all consultations and procedures. This necessitates excellent communication skills. The post holder will be expected to communicate verbally, face to face, in writing and by telephone, with NHS HIGHLAND the following groups on a daily basis: INTERNAL Patients, relatives, carers, GDPs and GPs to organise
