Dāsa Sāhitya: Some Notes on Early Publications, Commentaries and Concerns1 Abstract: Dāsa Sāhitya is a literary genre in Kannada, beginning to be seen from the late- fifteenth century. Making its mark both in literature and in Indian classical music, Dāsa Sāhitya attracted the attention of missionaries and other colonial functionaries and was one of the first genres to be edited and published in Kannada in the mid-nineteenth century. Very soon, the native editors and publishers started working on the genre. Usually classified under Bhakti literature as part of modern Kannada literature, Dāsa Sāhitya got published by individuals of varying interests. This essay makes a survey of some of the early publications of the genre and attempts to segregate varying concerns and interests within what may be broadly and sometimes, urgently termed as either ‘colonial’ or ‘nationalist’, even as it makes certain interesting observations on the changing phase of the literary culture: from manuscript to print. Key Words: Dāsa Sāhitya, Dāsa, Pada, Kannada, literature, print Dāsa Sāhitya in Kannada seems to be a post late-fifteenth century phenomenon. It is largely perceived as Vaiṣṇava and Mādhva literature, eulogizing Puraṇic gods in the Vaiṣṇava pantheon and is considered part of Bhakti literature in Kannada. Travelling singers of medieval India who had a presence from Rajasthan in the north to north Karnataka in the south; Iyal and Isai traditions of Tamil and the Vārakarī tradition of Maharashtra seem to have had the foundational impacts on the Dāsa Sāhitya tradition apart from its own indigenous Kannada roots. Response from the State Party to the World Heritage Committee’s Decision, 37 COM 7B.61 , paragraph by paragraph A. Removal of debris of the collapsed bridge and the relocation of the vehicular bridge outside of the property; The Public Works Department of Government of Karnataka, has resumed the work of removing the remaining part of the collapsed bridge viz., debris, columns and carriageway, without disturbing the nearby cultural resources, by adopting state of the art technology and the work is almost complete. As regards the relocation of the vehicular bridge, cultural impact assessment study has been completed and location of the vehicular bridge as recommended in the impact assessment study has been identified. B. Completed Integrated Management Plan together with a synthesis and a prioritisation of existing recommendations and intentions, for review by the World Heritage Centre and the Advisory Bodies - The Integrated Management Plan (draft already submitted to the WHC in 2006) gives an overall framework for the Management & protection of Hampi World Heritage Site. www.sankeertanam.com Purandara DAsaru -1987 Sangeeta Pitaamaha, Sri Purandara DAsaru [1480-1564] The history of Indian Music is the same for the whole of India. The two distinctive bifurcations into North Indian (HINDUSTANI) and South Indian (KARNATIC) music systems developed simultaneously, but independent of one another. While “HINDUSTANI’ music was highly influenced by the Arabic and Persian styles due to a series of invasions by Muslim rulers who were on a crusade to spread their religion, Karnatic music (which means old or traditional), developed without any external influences. Students of Karnatic Music are aware that the present system of karnatic music owes its foundations to the ‘Immortal Bard’ PURANDARA DASA. Known as “Karnataka SangIta Pitaamaha” or the great father of karnatic music, Purandara DAsa made great contributions to “Bhakti SangIta” (Divine of sacred music) and Lakshana SangIta (grammatical or art forms of music). The great Doyen and the most prolific composer in the South Indian Music Scenario,Purandara DAsa ornamented God with compositions usually known as “Devarnaama” (Literally- Names of Gods) or DAsara Padagalu (Songs of DAsa). Besides his compositions, he perfected systematic approach to train the student of Karnatic Music. He composed the “Swaraavali” (simple exercises based on solfa notes on specific scales), “Alankaaras” (Exercises based on the seven basic Taalas) and GItams (Melodic Compositions in simple style). He was, in fact, the innovator of the modern “Kriti” form which was later perfected by the great composer musician, Saint TyAgarAja Swami, one of the trinities of Karnatic Music. Though Venkatamakhi (17th century AD) devised the 72 MELAKARTA SYSTEM (72 parent scales giving rise to thousands of minor scales called Ragas) and the Musical Trinities, TyAgarAja, Mudduswamy Dikshitar and Syama Sastri perfected the foundations by their immortal compositions, modern Karnatic music is not thought about without at least a silent invocation to SangIta Pitaamaha. -

The installation ceremony also hosted musical programs, spiritual discourses by eminent scholars and honorary programs to recognize unique service to society by doctors, by researchers in the field of Dasa Literature and heritage, social workers and scientist. Vadiraja Tayaluru have always been on the forefront among his friends as a kid and supporting the religious origin and participating in NCC, RSS and Scouts. Has also been an avid environmentalist and the victory of the Granite apprehension in Pajaka Kshetra proves that as an eminent achievement and a feather in his cap. It's a remarkable achievement as a forerunner always being an individual who tenders and renders religion. -
