Introduction The family Dolichopodidae, commonly known as Long legged flies, are one of the most diverse families of Diptera (Grichanov,1999). Adult dolichopodids vary in size from about 1-9 mm in length and can be recognized by their elongate legs, reduced wing venation, aristate antennae, and relatively slender build. Most species are metallic greenish-blue to greenish-bronze, while some others are non-metallic yellowish (e.g., some species of Achalcus Loew, Argyrochlamys Lamb, Neurigona Rondani, Xanthochlorus Loew and Xanthina Aldrich), or brown to blackish (e.g., several species of Micromorphus Mik and Medetera Fischer von Waldheim). Dolichopodids are widespread and are found in all zoogeographic regions (Robinson,1970; Dyte, 1975; Dyte and Smith ,1980; Bickel and Dyte, 1989; Negrobov, 1991; Pollet et al., 2004). In general, adults and larvae prefer moist environments including stream and lake margins, humid forests, saltmarshes, seashores, and freshwater seepages, where they often occur in large numbers. -

[issn 0040-7496]. Published 1 December 2006. Papallacta stenoptera (Diptera: Dolichopodidae) gen. n. & sp. n. is from described from mossy páramo habitat at 4000 m in Ecuador. This species is tiny, body length 1.3 mm, has the wing reduced to a narrow strap, and is the first stenopterous dolichopodid described from the New World. Based on the structure of the head, thorax, and male postabdomen, and the setation, Papallacta belongs in the Medeterinae, even though males have large obovate aristal flags, unusual in this subfamily. Ant predation is regarded as a factor limiting the occurrence of flightlessness in Diptera. Daniel J. This is also a great place to report on your interesting (and hopefully fruitful) collecting activities! A Revision of the North American Species of the Dipterous Genus Hydrophorus

The genus Hydrophorus, estabhshed by Fallen in 18'23, as lim- ited by Loew in 1857, as generally used since and as herein un- derstood, comprises those flies of the family Dolichopodidse which have the posterior crossvein located near the hind margin of the wing (distant about its own length, measured on the fifth vein); fourth vein ending in or behind the apex (this excludes Scellus, in which it ends before the apex); front femora thickened (this ex- cludes Liancalus), more or less spinose beneath; dorsum of thorax not with a concave or flattened space before the scutellum (ex- cludes Medeterus) ; and with the usual single row of postorbital small bristles replaced below with a loose tuft of pale hairs cover- ing all the posterior surface of the head below the neck. The species are rather small, from 2.5 to about 6 mm. in length. The adults are always found close to the edge of water on wet earth, or else running on the surface of the water. They are carnivorous, seizing smaller flies, etc., and holding them with their raptorial front legs while they suck out the juices. The larvse have not been reported to my knowledge, but it is almost certain that they live in mud at the edge of water. The adults have a wide range of season, as will be indicated by the dates cited in connection with the descriptions. -

2 NEWS Richard L. Hurley, 1934-2008 by Justin Runyon Associate Curator, Montana Entomology Collection, Montana State University Bozeman, MT 59717 USA; [email protected] Richard Lester Hurley, dolichopodid worker and friend to everyone, passed away on September 3rd at the age of 74. He was born on June 22, 1934 in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario and received a B.A. in biology from Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario in 1957. For his senior thesis, he conducted an insect survey of the Lake Opinicon region. Rich spent the summers of 1957-58 working for Agriculture Canada; collecting insects in the Northwest Territories for the Northern Insect Survey in 1957, and in southern Manitoba in 1958. It was during these two summers that his interests were confidently narrowed to Diptera (“refined” as Rich would say). For this, Rich was charged with collecting all insects, but he quickly favored the flies – in particular the ornate, long-legged Dolichopodidae. After polling a number of prominent dipterists for a list of dolichopodid genera most in need of revision, he chose Hydrophorus for his doctoral work. Rich completed his Ph.D. in Systematic Entomology in 1965 at the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana. Rich then became a professor of Biology at Humboldt State University in Arcata, California where he remained for 30 years (1966-1996). There, he was an admired teacher and advised approximately a dozen graduate students on subjects ranging from pigments of butterfly wings, to the arthropod fauna in pitcher plants, to histology of glands found in dolichopodids. Rich’s enthusiasm for Diptera was contagious: one student had a large, male Dolichopus tattooed on his arm! He also led annual field trips to the desert southwest, which are much storied and remain legendary among the participants. -
