Shout Wipes and Tide To-Go Pen Nobody is perfect and spills do happen. If you are like me and wearing something white, it’s inevitable that you will spill on yourself. These wipes and handy-dandy pen could save you a lot of embarrassment and a forever stain on your favorite top!

Mini Sewing Kit Seems easy enough, but you would be surprised at how many times I have had to sew up a hem, sew on a button or re-attach a hook and eye for a friend at a party. I mean, maybe the reason I am always fixing things is because they know I have a sewing kit too. Wrinkle Release Spray My biggest pet peeve is wrinkles! More and more I am seeing people wearing that looks both new and also like it was just pulled out of the hamper at the same time. If you want to look somewhat polished, please take the time to steam or press your clothing before wearing it in public. If it is something that wrinkles easily, make sure you have a bottle of wrinkle release spray to at least relax the wrinkles.

Lint Roller My second pet peeve is when people wear clothing with lint or pet hair all over. Take a second and “roll” your look. It could make the difference between your look being a 2 and a 10! ■

Stress Less with Tech this Season!

Oh, you can just smell it in the air–gingerbread, pine, figgy pudding (whatever that is) and STRESS. That’s right. The holidays are fast approaching, and what should be the most wonderful time of the year is often laden with anxiety and worries. Stress over finding the right present, hosting all the hoopla and arriving with just the right white elephant gift for your yearly lady’s gift exchange might call for some extra help. Home Helpers Yep, stress can be abundant in our homes over the holidays, but what about when we’re traveling? These days, innovative smart-home devices such as security cameras, safety monitors, smart thermostats and garage door openers make leaving home easier. The extra security and notifications to your smart device can ease your mind and make holiday travel a little jollier.

Take Advantage of the Tech If trying one of these techy tension lifters for the holidays sounds promising, choose just one to start. Why create more anxiety by trying to juggle a sleigh-load of devices and apps at the same time? Experts also recommend researching and checking reviews before spending all of your stocking money on any glittery gadget. As a good friend once said about the holidays, “Sometimes you just need to relax and accept the crazy,” and she is right to an extent. But if you don’t want to go down without a good fight, then consider the benefits of using stress relief technology that is probably right in front of you anyway. You may find ways to reduce the tension from the tinsel and continue enjoying the merriment into the next year. ■

Great Gift Ideas for Seniors

Whenever my late grandmother was on the receiving end of a gift-giving event, her stock answer was “If I can’t eat it, I don’t want it.” That always made me chuckle. When I was younger, I thought it was odd someone would request food for a gift. Now that I’m older, I completely relate to that sentiment, notably since I’m not interested in receiving a gift that will likely collect dust on a shelf. WRITTEN BY ANN E. BUTENAS

ikalah Morris’s story over the last few years reads like the hero- ine from your favorite Hallmark movie: struggling to overcome dreadful obstacles that befall her, yet each time climbing back on her feet, no matter the odds stacked against her. While the 30-year old Kansas City, Missouri, resident wasn’t fighting a horrificM villain conspiring against her with evil plots, plenty of problems nearly consumed her. In less than four years, Mikalah married, moved across the country, got a job, was divorced and then fired from her job. On the bright side, she did meet the love of her life, Austin, and quickly landed a new job. One short year later, she was fired again. Finally, all of the negativ- ity caught up with her.

After the shock wore off and tears subsid- ed, he reminded me, ‘We all get a few Hail Marys in life to throw; let’s throw one for your styling business and see how it plays.’ I guess you could say I’m mid-Hail Mary and so far it looks pretty good.” And that is how the fairy tale of Knots & Pearls begins, a styling com- pany with the goal to make people fall in love with their lives through the clothes they wear and the homes they create. Toasting the Holidays!

Champagne sets the occasion right from the pop! Even an ordinary Tuesday can be made a bit better just sharing a bottle of bubbly and inviting the effervescence to entertain and delight you. Whether you choose a glass of champagne, prosecco, cava or sparkling wine, it’s easy to taste and choose your favorite bottle of bubbles no matter where they are produced. The delicate aroma of honeyed experienced a secondary fermentation fueled sparkling wine in the tank versus the bottle,

60 www.herlifemagazine.com creating a more economical option to champagne. Now it’s produced all over the world. Bubbles are pleasant and less intense.

Cava Spain created a sparkling wine in the 1700s, but didn’t see huge success until the mid-1800s when the region of Champagne, France, experienced severe plague of phylloxera that caused destruction of vital rootstock. Produced similarly by single bottle fermentation, cava must be made only in defined areas of Spain using specific grapes including char- donnay, pinot noir, garnacha and monastrell.

American Sparkling Wine and Champagne In 1891, France staked their worldwide claim on méthode champ- enoise, creating the only place where Champagne could be produced. The U.S. agreed to the concept in the 1919 Treaty of Versailles but the Senate did not actually ratify the treaty, leaving a loophole that allowed producers to use the phrase California Champagne. Prohibition began in 1919 and wiped out most of the legitimate wine market in America. Even though Prohibition ended in 1933, it took another 40 years for the American wine industry to regain successful footing. Over time, many American wineries perfected their processes and labeled their wine as méthode tranditionalle. Sparkling wine makes a great gift by the bottle or by the experi- ence. If you’re looking for something unique this holiday season, why not explore sparkling wines in a setting where tasting and learning is an immersive experience? Schramsberg, Krug, Gloria Ferrer and Domaine Carneros invite their guests to walk the vineyards, absorb the terroir and taste the unique sense of style and place in each glass of champagne.

Splitting Bubbles With the availability of sparkling wines in 187.5ml splits and 375ml half-bottles, it’s easy to enjoy one or two glasses without opening a standard 750ml bottle. The smaller sizes are also great for gift giving or adding to a gift basket of goodies. If you need to cap a standard bottle, the sparkling wine stoppers on the market do a great job of sealing your bubbles fairly tightly, even overnight. Keep sparkling wines chilled within reach for easy pairing with near- ly any menu from appetizers to dessert and for any gathering, party or last-minute gift. Bubbles can be enjoyed day or night Remember that bot- tles of sparkling wine are made with thicker glass to contain the CO2 so they take longer to chill to the perfect temperature of about 50 degrees. Is Champagne better than sparkling wine? Your palate is the judge. In 1880, Mr. Schram, California proprietor of Schramsberg Wines, served his Anderson Valley sparkling wines to an early wine tour- ist, Robert Louis Stevenson, who stated, “Wine is bottled poetry.” I couldn’t agree more! ■

SAME BEACH, NEXT YEAR by Dorothea Benton Frank

In Same Beach, Next Year, bestselling author Dorothea Benton Frank delivers a hard-to-put-down family drama set in South Carolina’s Lowcountry, where two families start a tradition of spending their summer vacations together at their beachside condos on the Isle of Palms, one of Charleston’s barrier islands. Parts of the story are told by Adam, giving some insight into how his fantasies about Eve have kept him living in the past. He’s a guy who doesn’t spend too much time worrying about the feelings of the people around him until it’s almost too late. As Eliza wonders whether she should forgive Adam, she begins to discover long-buried secrets about herself. The pos- sible death of her marriage is a kind of re- birth for her. The trip to Greece is taken and she finds an entire community of friends and relatives who remember her mother and welcome her with open arms. While she’s gone, Adam has a chance to imagine what married life would be like with Eve, who has none of Eliza’s homemaking skills. The two couples seem headed for di- vorce until unexpected events bring every- one together. Suddenly things are put into perspective and the path forward becomes clear. This is where the story goes deeper and more satisfying. Besides family drama, Frank serves up plenty of escapism with descriptions of beautiful and exotic locations. Many deli- cious meals are consumed, especially when Eliza escapes to her Greek island. With plenty of drama, sassy dialogue and a travelogue of Greece, Same Beach, Next Year is a fun sum- mer read and entertaining in any season. It’s Easy to be Green if You Know These Simple Secrets

Climate crises are not new. In the 1930s, the Dustbowl was caused in part by misguided farming practices on the Great Plains. Thirty years later, the use and misuse of pesticides, chronicled in Rachael Carson’s book, Silent Spring, had become an ecological disaster. WRITTEN BY STEPHANIE FOX

Just plug these

72 www.herlifemagazine.com into a power strip, turning them off with one flip of a switch. When you invest in a new appliance, look for the Energy Star la- bel, an EPA designation making it easy for people to identify efficient appliances. Some may initially cost more, but in the long run, they can help cut significant amounts from energy bills and help minimized greenhouse gas emissions. Adjusting heating and air conditioning temperatures can also save a lot of energy and money. Thermostat fine-tuning by just a few degrees can help a lot. Don’t heat or cool areas that aren’t being used or when no one is home. You can also adjust your water heater’s tem- perature setting a few degrees without even noticing.

Remember to Reduce, Reuse and Recycle We may be living at the beginning of the end of what is called the throw-away culture. People are getting serious about cutting down on disposables by bringing their own cups to coffee shops and reusable bags to supermarkets and avoiding throwaway packaging. These are small efforts, but it’s a good start. For items that can’t be reused, there’s recycling. Recycling is an important way to help keep items out of landfills. Across the country, municipal and commercial recycling programs have been wildly suc- cessful in gathering acceptable items to turn back into usable products. Programs can differ greatly from city to city, so check with your recy- cler to learn the rules in your area. Recycling has been in the news because China has announced it will no longer accept some items from the U.S., at least for now, forc- ing many programs to send about 20 percent of items to landfills or burners. But in many places, recycling programs continue to be popular and successful.

You Are What You (Don’t) Eat Americans waste a lot of food. Nationally, more than 30 percent of food is wasted, according to some estimates. If food waste were a country, it would emit more greenhouse gases than any country except for China and the U.S.A. In the United States, much of that food waste happens in the home. What can you do? Just because a product has passed a “sell by” or “use by” date does not mean it is unhealthy or even bad tasting. Exceptions are baby formula and some dairy products. So, don’t throw away good food. Leftovers can be used as well. Leftover baked chicken makes a great chicken salad. Leftover beef stew can become a gourmet soup when you add some caramelized onions, beans or lentils, some cooked pasta, broth and a splash of red wine or sherry. You can also help by choosing food products that use less ener- gy to grow or ready for market. Choose grass-fed beef, pasture-raised poultry (no antibiotics, less energy needed and less methane from cow burps), organic produce and locally grown foods when possible. If you can, grow some of your own; even a few pots of peppers or herbs can help. Farmers’ markets and some grocery stores have begun to sell “ugly” fruits and vegetables. They are as delicious as the picture-per- fect fruits. Don’t turn down or toss away a lumpy-looking apple or a melon with a small bruise. Make green a habit. You don’t have to save the world on your own, but small actions, a little here and a little there, can make all the difference. ■

Building a Working Wardrobe

Have you ever considered the amount of time you spend each day picking out an outfit for work? It could be more than you think. Respondents to a 2018 Nordstrom’s survey reporting spending an average of 8 hours per week in their closet looking for something to wear. WRITTEN BY CATIE WATSON

If you’re going to wear leggings or yoga pants at work, buy the type that has a zipper and can pass for pants when worn to the office, but are still comfort- able enough for a workout or run. The question of shoes for a basic work wardrobe all depends on where you work, your personal style and what’s most comfortable. Low pumps are more practical than stilettos and flats are more practical still. In more casual work environments, a pair of fancy sneakers could be the most versatile choice. Men have been wearing sneakers at work for years, so it’s finally time for women to tie on a pair for the office and still feel professional. Whether it’s the perfect little black dress or a pair of jeans that fit just right, identify a work outfit that makes you feel self-assured and confident. This should be your go-to outfit for interviews, im- portant meetings and days when you want to feel like you’re at the top of your game, even if you’re not. Another aspect that Kastan of Trunk Club emphasizes is clear- ing out your closet. Taking advantage of a basic working wardrobe is much more difficult if you have to dig through a cluttered clos- et to find it. Most of us have clothing that we don’t wear but are holding on to for sentimental reasons or because we think we’ll wear it at some point in the future. The Nordstrom’s survey found that up to one third of clothing in the average closet hasn’t been worn for more than a year. Perhaps simplifying and organizing your existing wardrobe should be the first step when building your working wardrobe. ■

Guarding Against Holiday Hazards

The holiday season is a time for sharing and celebrating, but it’s also one of the most hazardous seasons of the year. While we hate to sound like doom and gloom at what’s supposed to be a happy time, a little bit of forethought and prevention can help you avoid season-spoiling mishaps in and around the house. Unwrapping is half the

80 www.herlifemagazine.com fun of getting a gift, so encourage family members to take their time and open gifts carefully.

Avoid Too Many Cooks in the Kitchen Everyone may want to pitch in and help prepare that big holiday feast, but the scene can become chaotic. The National Fire Protection Association reports that unattended cooking is the number one cause of kitchen fires, with the risk peaking on Thanksgiving Day. It’s a good idea to have one person in charge of the stove and oven while food is being prepared. That person should stay in the room at all times or appoint a stand-in. Another fire prevention tip is to keep counter clutter to a mini- mum, with flammable items such as paper towels and plastic wrap stored away from the stove.

Don’t Overindulge The holidays are all about indulging ourselves with rich food, alcohol and sweets. The key to a healthy holiday season is avoiding overindul- gence. Too many fatty and sugary foods and too much alcohol or caf- feine can lead to a medical emergency, especially for those with diabetes or heart conditions. Increased indulgence in alcohol is also the cause of a rise in fatal auto accidents during the holidays. Stay sober during holiday celebrations that require driving or be sure to appoint a designated driver.

Beware of Exploding Turkeys Besides feeling too full after eating a turkey feast, you could actually be injured by a holiday turkey. Some families have embraced a new tra- dition of deep frying their turkey. This practice can result in a frying bird that is wet or partially frozen catching on fire or exploding. The open vat of hot oil used for frying also presents the risk of serious burns. Besides accidents from turkey frying, emergency rooms also see an increase in foot and leg injuries caused by dropping a hot turkey when it’s being taken out of the oven. There’s also a holiday spike in visits for finger and hand lacerations attributed to turkey carving, often by someone with little ex- perience or practice. Safety experts recommend exercising caution during all aspects of turkey cooking and carving. A turkey, roast or ham that you save as a holiday leftover can make you sick if it’s not prepared and stored properly. Disinfect kitchen coun- tertops before and after cooking with meat. Keep warm dishes warm and cold dishes cold if you don’t plan to serve them right away. Turkey and other leftovers should be refrigerated within two hours of serving in glass or plastic containers.

The Risks of Indoor Fires Besides the increased holiday risk of kitchen fires, there is a great- er chance of fire in other areas of the home during the holidays. Flick- ering candlelight is a holiday tradition for many, but it’s also the cause of many fires, along with fireplaces, discarded holiday wrapping paper and dehydrated Christmas trees. Make sure your smoke detectors are working and have fresh batteries before the holidays begin so you’re prepared for the worst.

Don’t Forget Prescriptions Refills Doctors are busy during the holiday season due to seasonal illnesses and usually have shorter holiday hours. If you have a critical prescription, make sure you aren’t at risk of needed a refill when your doctor’s office or pharmacy is closed. If you’re hosting out-of-town relatives who take medication, remind them to bring enough for their entire visit. ■

The U.S. government doesn’t track the number of animal shelters and refuges in the country, but the American Humane estimates that there are at least 13,500 brick-and-mortar shelters, animal sanc- tuaries and rescue groups. You can help by adopting a pet as well as volunteering your time and donating money, food, blankets or toys. You’ll have the benefit of seeing the direct impact of your contribution, which isn’t usually possible when you donate to a large national organization. Today’s Timeshare Outlook

The timeshare business doesn’t enjoy a favorable reputation. Tainted by overly aggressive salespersons and buyers not fully understanding the product they’ve purchased, timeshare companies regularly show up on lists of industries drawing consumer complaints. As a result, it’s negatively impacted their status with vacationers. In addition, many folks forgo the ongoing costs of timeshare properties as the popularity of home-sharing blossoms. Normally, they de- crease in value. You don’t own property; you simply own the right to stay in that proper- ty. In fact, some owners wind up giving away their timeshare to get out from paying the maintenance fees. But their loss is great news for buyers who can find bargains on timeshare resale websites. “If you’re a planner and can plan va- cations a year in advance, a points-system purchased resale can cut your vacation costs in half. In addition, you get a condo, instead of a hotel room, that has a kitchen so you can reduce costs by eating in,” noted Sara. “A lot of resorts can be very high end. However, a lot are not. Timesharing is not for everyone. Last-minute travelers and those looking for high-end accommodations and services won’t really enjoy timesharing or get the value out of it.” Many timeshare owners embrace the ability of planning vacations at award-win- ning getaways or accommodations and not worrying about the actual costs of paying for a five-star resort. Also, you might enjoy gift- ing your friends or family your timeshare or donating it to a nonprofit. Some use them for family gatherings. But if you’re contemplating a purchase, don’t make your decision based on impulse. Do your homework; this is a purchase that will be with you for the rest of your life. “Research, research, research,” stated Sara. “Use the internet, sources like Facebook groups, TUG2.com and others to determine if a timeshare is right for you. Then, consider resale first if you’re interested.” Many owners point to the fact a time- share forces a family or couple to actually plan a vacation and take it. Whether you’re looking to try a home-sharing option or buying into the timeshare industry, the important thing to remember is to actually take your vacation, something many hard-working Americans forget to do. ■
