Illuminating antimatter The humble hydrogen atom has taught us much during the past two centuries, ultimately leading to the atomic picture of Bohr. As this month’s cover feature argues, physicists are morally obligated to subject anti-hydrogen to the same analytical tools – in particular to test if antimatter obeys the same fundamental symmetries as matter. Following a long campaign, the ALPHA collaboration at CERN’s Antiproton Decelerator (AD) has recently measured the antihydrogen 1S–2S transition and other spectral properties of antihydrogen, opening a new direction of exploration. Meanwhile, the AD’s BASE experiment has measured the antiproton magnetic moment with exquisite precision, further testing symmetries such as CPT. We also describe a Cornell-Brookhaven project to build the first superconducting multi-turn energy recovery linac, survey the latest attempts to test the validity of the Pauli exclusion principle, and report on an initiative to establish a world-class research infrastructure in South-East Europe following the CERN model. Hadron colliders have contributed to a golden era of discovery in high-energy physics, hosting experiments that have enabled physicists to unearth the cornerstones of the Standard Model. This success story began 50 years ago with CERN’s Intersecting Storage Rings (featured on the cover of this issue) and culminated in the Large Hadron Collider (p38) – which has spawned thousands of papers in its first 10 years of operations alone (p47). It also bodes well for a potential future circular collider at CERN operating at a centre-of-mass energy of at least 100 TeV, a feasibility study for which is now in full swing. Even hadron colliders have their limits, however. To explore possible new physics at the highest energy scales, physicists are mounting a series of experiments to search for very weakly interacting “slim” particles that arise from extensions in the Standard Model (p25).     Subnuclear Physics: Past, Present and Future International Symposium 30 October - 2 November 2011 – The purpose of the Symposium is to discuss the origin, the status and the future of the new frontier of Physics, the Subnuclear World, whose first two hints were discovered in the middle of the last century: the so-called “Strange Particles” and the “Resonance #++”. It took more than two decades to understand the real meaning of these two great discoveries: the existence of the Subnuclear World with regularities, spontaneously plus directly broken Symmetries, and totally unexpected phenomena including the existence of a new fundamental force of Nature, called Quantum ChromoDynamics. Depending on their position, neutral countries can also extract concessions from the belligerents if their situation permits it. Despite their different starting places, governments and threats against them, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland provided similar types of political and economic concessions to the belligerents.

    Márkus Keller1 Professionalization in Socialism Architects and Architecture after 1945 in Hungary2 https://doi.org/10.18030/socio.hu.2020en.95 Abstract In my study, I investigate architects’ search for their place in the new society and the history of their profession after 1945 in Hungary with the help of professionalization theories. Through statistics, memoirs,- in terviews, archival documents, laws and decrees, I seek to discover what kind of role architecture and architects played in the dictatorship of the 1950s and how that role changed in the Kádár system. In addition to external analysis, I place particular emphasis on how this change of role is reflected in the lifestory interviews and in the identity of the architects of the era. In general, members of a certain profession (at least in continental Europe) simultaneously desire autonomy and require state support in order to reach their objectives (Halmos–Szívós 2010). This is especially true in the case of architects, who are una- ble to realize their professional ideas without having a significant amount of material resources placed at their disposal.
