In a ctional feudal province of Japan, the uneasy balance between secrets and subplots remained quietly—albeit delicately—settled until the day the regional Daimyo discovered the Geisha’s secret. For these many long years the Daimyo had coveted, consulted, and trusted the Geisha. However, during that time she had secretly despised the Daimyo and loved his most loyal samurai in secret. ey bore a child 20 years ago, who has now grown into a formidable young man. Upon discovering the Geisha’s secret relationship, the Daimyo raged and dishonored the samurai, ordering him to kill the Geisha and commit seppuku. e samurai refused and fought his way free, helping the Geisha escape. e samurai was declared a ronin and both were declared fugitives. In hiding, the Geisha’s son began to spread many of the secrets the Daimyo shared with his mother over the years and the Daimyo’s honor began to come into question by the city nobles. Now the Shogun is on his way to the city to consult the Daimyo and uncover the truth. e Daimyo has called all his noble allies and the ronin’s main rival to hunt for the Geisha and the ronin in hopes of exposing the conspiracy against him. Setup 1.Place the Shogun Board in the center of the play area and place the Shogun Track marker on the Shogun Track’s rst space. 2.Place the “Temple” Establishment Board in the center of the play area and place the Rival and Daimyo tiles on it. 3.Separate the Role Cards out by type and build the Role deck according to the number of play- ers (see chart on bottom of next page), returning any unused Role cards to the box. -

Some Observations on the Weddings of Tokugawa Shogun’s Daughters – Part 1 Abstract In this study I shall discuss the marriage politics of Japan's early ruling families (mainly from the 6th to the 12th centuries) and the adaptation of these practices to new circumstances by the leaders of the following centuries. Marriage politics culminated with the founder of the Edo bakufu, the first shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu (1542-1616). To show how practices continued to change, I shall discuss the weddings given by the fifth shogun sunaT yoshi (1646-1709) and the eighth shogun Yoshimune (1684-1751). The marriages of Tsunayoshi's natural and adopted daughters reveal his motivations for the adoptions and for his choice of the daughters’ husbands. The marriages of Yoshimune's adopted daughters show how his atypical philosophy of rulership resulted in a break with the earlier Tokugawa marriage politics. -

Shigisan engi Shigisan engi Overview I. The Shigisan engi or Legends of the Temple on Mount Shigi consists of three handscrolls. Scroll 1 is commonly called “The Flying Granary,” Scroll 2 “The Exorcism of the Engi Emperor,” and Scroll 3 “The Story of the Nun.” These scrolls are a pictorial presentation of three legends handed down among the common people. These legends appear under the title “Shinano no kuni no hijiri no koto” (The Sage of Shinano Province) in both the Uji sh¯ui monogatari (Tales from Uji) and the Umezawa version of the Kohon setsuwash¯u (Collection of Ancient Legends). Since these two versions of the legends are quite similar, one is assumed to be based on the other. The Kohon setsuwash¯u ver- sion is written largely in kana, the phonetic script, with few Chinese characters and is very close to the text of the Shigisan engi handscrolls. Thus, it seems likely that there is a deep connection between the Shigisan engi and the Kohon setsuwash¯u; one was probably the basis for the other. “The Flying Granary,” Scroll 1 of the Shigisan engi, lacks the textual portion, which has probably been lost. As that suggests, the Shigisan engi have not come down to us in their original form. The Shigisan Ch¯ogosonshiji Temple owns the Shigisan engi, and the lid of the box in which the scrolls were stored lists two other documents, the Taishigun no maki (Army of Prince Sh¯otoku-taishi) and notes to that scroll, in addition to the titles of the three scrolls. -

WASEDA RILAS JOURNALNews NO. and 7 Narrative in the Early Meiji Period: Kanagaki Robun’s Saga denshinroku News and Narrative in the Early Meiji Period: Kanagaki Robun’s Saga denshinroku Tim KAWANISHI-YOUNG Abstract This paper examines the relationship between early Japanese newspaper war reporting and the written mode of jitsuroku in the first decade of the Meiji period. Kanagaki Robun’s Saga denshinroku is introduced as a case study, as it is both one of the first Meiji “war jitsuroku” and a founding influence on what was to become a popu- lar genre. In his author’s introduction to Saga denshinroku, Kanagaki Robun attempts to rhetorically distance the work from popular conceptions of jitsuroku and of gesaku fiction as a whole, situating it instead as a contribution to “public history.” However, the text itself draws strongly on the format and written style of the gesaku genre of the yomihon. Comparison of the rhetoric and the style of the author’s introduction with passages from Saga den- shinroku itself illuminates the complexities and the contradictions of ideologies of history, fiction, and “the news” in the early Meiji period. Introduction and Background As is well established, newspapers are a distinctly modern medium in Japan,⑴ first arriving in the last years of the Edo period after the forced opening of the country by American warships, then (after a brief period of prohibi- tion during and after the Meiji Restoration) quickly spreading when officially sanctioned by the new Meiji government.⑵ In Japanese media studies, some attention -

However, there were different embodiments of this system, personifications that two Samurai themselves have documented in two of the most well known books ever written by Samurai; The Book of Five Rings by Miyamoto Musashi and Hagakure, by Yamamoto Tsunetomo. Bushido has usually been considered an ethical code that was set to a certain standard, just as the ten commandments are. This analysis suggests that it was in fact not a set of moral laws, but that bushido was embodied differently by every Samurai. Bushido was ultimately a guideline, just like rules in religion. It was a path that one was to adhere to as well as they could, but history has made it clear that it depended upon the circumstances in which a Samurai lived; the life of a Samurai in the twelfth century would filled with fighting for their master and practical use of the code; far different from that of a Samurai living during the first half of the 1800’s, who would be keeping track of the business operations of their master instead of fighting. -

Methodology for Analyzing the Genealogy of Ancient Japanese Clans Methodology for Analyzing the Genealogy of Ancient Japanese Clans Masanobu SUZUKI Abstract The genealogies of ancient Japanese clans were created to declare their political positions and claim legiti- macy for their service to the great kings in the Yamato sovereignty. Their genealogies, which include a great deal of semi-fictional content, and they are closely related to the “logic of rule”. In other words, they are representa- tions of the view of the world created by the ancient clans and used to support each other. By analyzing the genealogies, we can understand the actual situations of the ancient clans that we were not able to illuminate by using well-known historical materials. In addition, we can reveal the formation process of ancient Japan. How- ever, these points are not well known to Japanese researchers, much less to foreign researchers. Furthermore, until now, the history of genealogical studies was compiled as necessary in case studies, or classified from a research- er’s own particular viewpoint. Therefore, in this article, I have presented previous research in chronological order and by various categories, confirmed each category’s respective significance, and advocated three methodologies for analyzing the genealogies.
