A banda “SYNTEN OF A DOWN” Formada em 1994, Glendale, Califórnia, EUA, atualmente é composta por Serj Tankian (vocais, teclados), Daron Malakian (guitarra, vocais), Shavo Odadjian (baixo) e John Dolmayan (bateria). A banda chegou ao topo após o lançamento do álbum Toxicity, que estreou em primeiro lugar na Billboard e atingiu o topo das paradas no Canadá, inclusive na semana dos ataques de 11 de setembro de 2001 em Nova York. Beginning in 1990, Tool have become highly influential for several music movements, produced multi-platinum selling records topping the charts in several countries, and won three Grammy Awards, yet due to their intense and multi- layered music, they have remained an alternative act; A Perfect Circle met with similar response. Unlike most of music bands, Tool are a democratic group in the sense that no “spokesman” for the band exists and A Perfect Circle was started by its guitarist Billy Howerdell; however, Keenan’s lyrics are important, for they provide a context for the music. He approaches many issues in his songs, such as personal feelings, manipulation, social criticism, hypocrisy, religion or censorship.

Kogos: Sleep Now in the Fire Sleep Now in the Fire by Nick Kogos (English 1102) age Against the Machine is a Los Angeles based rock band formed in 1991. “Rage” as they’re referred to, is known for its heavily influenced political lyrics and revolutionary ideas. RVocalist Zack de la Rocha and guitarist Tom Morello are very involved in left-wing political activism, endorsing the American Indian Movement, the Feminist Majority Foundation, Amnesty International, and many environmental protection and anti-war organizations (axisofjustice.org). A common topic found throughout their songs is how imperialism affects the world. In one particularly song, “Sleep Now in the Fire,” Rage explores the consequences of American imperialism, foreign policy, and the penalties of refusing American influence. Morello and de la Rocha both have personal experience with politics and other social issues. De la Rocha, a Mexican American, was often the butt of racist comments by his classmates and teachers growing up. After fighting years of depression, anger, and drug abuse, de la Rocha decided to vent his anger by becoming a rapper (“Zack de la Rocha Biography”).

It is a raw and terrifying sound, a windy Darth Vader wheeze of horror, suggesting intense rage or madness or worse, and it’s erupting right now from the smiling face of Serj Tankian. He is sitting inches away from me, in a dark little room upstairs at the House of Blues, and behind him stands a carving of the elephant deity Ganesha, the Hindu patron of arts and sciences, of intellect and wisdom. It is peaceful here. And our conversation has been typically pleasant. Until I ask about his metallic howl, and he quickly demonstrates, with no warning at all. I’m actually startled by it. It’s a common vocal affectation in the metal world, very often overused, obliterating any subtler shades of emotion and meaning as a more direct route to some imagined inferno at hell’s seventh circle. For Tankian, it’s just “a trick,” he says, a small piece of a broader repertoire that has made him perhaps the finest hard-rock singer of his generation, and certainly one of the most powerful and compelling voices in pop music. As the main voice for System of a Down, he could be as wild and unpredictable as the music, shifting from melodic croon to nattering diatribe, at times playful, passionate, or intensely political. Much of that range (sans the howl) can be heard on his new solo album, “Elect the Dead,” the first project to emerge from System’s current, open-ended hiatus.
