ASSISTED BY K. RANGACHARI, M.A., of the Madras Government Museum. VOLUME VI P TO S GOVERNMENT PRESS, MADRAS 1909. College Library CASTES AND TRIBES OF SOUTHERN INDIA. VOLUME VI. filALLI OR VANNIYAN. Writing concerning this caste the Census Superintendent, 1871* records that "a book has been written by a native to show that the Pallis (Pullies or Vanniar) of the south are descendants of the fire races (Agnikulas) of the Kshatriyas, and that the Tamil Pullies were at one time the shepherd kings of Egypt." At the time of the census, 1871, a petition was submitted to Government by representatives of the caste, praying that they might be classified as Kshatriyas, and twenty years later, in con- nection with the census, 1891, a book entitled ' Vannikula ' Vilakkam : a treatise on the Vanniya caste, was compiled by Mr. T. Aiyakannu Nayakar, in support of the caste claim to be returned as Kshatriyas, for details concerning which claim I must refer the reader to the book itself. In 1907, a book entitled Varuna Darpanam (Mirror of Castes) was published, in which an attempt is made to connect the caste with the Pallavas. Kulasekhara, one of the early Travancore kings, and one of the most renowned Alwars reverenced by the Sri Vaishnava community in Southern India, is claimed by the Pallis as a king of their caste.

Amidst the milieu of ancient and contemporary theories of Consciousness is the ancient Indian philosophy of advaita-vedānta, or the system of non-duality. This dissertation explores the nature of the Self as Consciousness according to the well-known 20th Century philosopher of advaita-vedānta and Hindu guru, Swami Chinmayananda (1916-1993), drawing upon the core texts of Vedānta, the Upaniṣads, and the works of the chief systematizer of Advaita philosophy and the head of Chinmayananda’s monastic order, Śaṅkara (788-820 CE), and locates Chinmayananda and his work within the contemporaneous and ongoing dialogue regarding Hinduism. Understanding that the Upaniṣads are cryptic in nature and that we need a lens through which we can study them, we begin by providing a biography and analysis of the life of Swami Chinmayananda, the lens we have chosen for this dissertation, in the first two chapters.

Periya thirumozhi Thiruvallikeni is one among the 108 divya desams sung by the alwars (divya sooris). It is located in the heart of Chennai, the capital of Tamil nadu, India. In this temple lord Sri Krishna gives darshan as Partha-sarathi (chariot driver of arjuna, one of the pancha pandavas). There are few more sannadhis in this temple with the deities giving divine darshan in various "Archa" incarnations of lord Sriman Narayana. Out of the 12 alwars, three of them namely Peyalwar, Thirumazhisai alwar and Thirumangai alwar have done mangalasasanams for the various perumals in this temple. Being in the heart of Chennai, It would be strange to hear when somebody says that this place Thiruvallikeni was once known for it's dense groves. Strange, but it is true that this place looked picturesque with groves of trees centuries ago, a fact which has it's source in the song sung by Thirumangai Aazhwar about this place. Since this Sthala was surrounded with Tulsi trees, it was also called Brindharanyam in Puranas. (Brindham = Thulasi, Aaranyam = Forest). As it was a place where the ponds (keni) were found filled with lilies, it was called Thiruvallikeni. The temple has grand brahmotsavams for Sri Parthasarathy swami during the tamil month of chittirai (april-may) and Sri Azhagiyasingar during the tamil month of aani (june-july).There are also grand utsavams for Sri Ramanuja (april- may) and Sri Manavalamamunigal (oct-nov) besides utsavams for Chakravarthi thirumagan, Mannathan, Gajendra varadan, Vedavalli thayar, soodhikoduththa nachiyar along with other alwars and acharyas.
