REPORT ON PANEL DISCUSSION: LIGHT UP ROTARY BY BUILDING UP MEMBERSHIP -Fifth Plenary Session,80th D3300 Conference, 10.45am-12.15pm, Sunday, 7th December 2014

1st panelist: President Sim Jit Shen (RC Kulim). Topic: Overcoming challenges of growing a club in a small community.

President Sim spoke on the many innovations that the club had to adopt to increase membership and strengthen the club. The club has a current membership of 14 , an increase of 2 from the last Rotary year and their goal is to achieve a target of at least 18 members before the end of this Rotary year. He spoke about the need to motivate the current members to sustain their interest and when bringing new members, to take enough time before inducting them. Inactive members are being made to get more involved through "Team Dynamics”(Forming, Storming, Norming, Performing and Dorming). Doing projects regularly, updating members knowledge and involvement through bulletins, Facebook and whatsApp, making contribution to TRF on the birthday of each member and adoption of a brand name “RoCK” are some of the initiatives through which the club is trying to overcome challenges and build team spirit.

2nd panelist: IPP Datin Sandra Anne Raj (RC Bandar Sunway) Topic: Success stories of membership growth and retention in RC Bandar Sunway- Our unique proposition.

IPP Datin Sandra spoke on the rapid growth of RC Bandar Sunway in the last few years and they have 48 members now. The membership growth and retention has largely been due to several factors including fun and fellowship, a great meeting venue at a reasonable price and the many significant projects in all 5 avenues of service carried out by the club. The success of the club growth is also attributed to the vision of the charter members and senior Rotarians who have encouraged and given opportunities to the newer members to lead the club with their infusion of fresh and new ideas and enthusiasm. Currently, 62% of the club consists of those who have been members for less than 5 years and 60% of the board members are new members.

3rd panelist: AG Dato’ Rick Loh (RC ) Topic: Answering President Gary’s call to bring in spouses and family members into Rotary.

AG Dato’ Rick Loh spoke of the dire straits his club was in,when he rejoined RC Bukit Bintang in 2008. The club had at that time only 7 members and were on the verge of being deregistered. Slowly, however the membership picked up and soon their membership increase was impressive enough for them to win the district award for membership growth for a few consecutive years. Currently, their membership stands at 79. Their strategy for this impressive growth was to invite spouses and family members as well as more ladies to join the club. They have 43 female members and spouses and family members constitute 29%. (24 members). AG Dato’Rick attributes the dynamism of the club due to the excellent camaraderie among the family members who have become closer and club meetings are like family get together. He spoke about the fun and joy of working with spouses and children who have in turn introduced their friends into Rotary. They take part in club projects and go for holidays together when they visit their numerous sister clubs overseas.

4th panelist: PP Rema Paul (RC Greater ) Topic: Women in our clubs: The Untapped source

PP Rema spoke on the rapidly emerging gender equality and empowerment of women. However, she feels that there is still a long way to go before women can rightfully claim to be treated as an equal. She spoke of her personal tragedy and the trauma she had to endure and how Rotary gave her the platform to lead a full life again. Though a Rotarian for more than 25 years, she enjoys it to the fullest and intends to go on .

PP Rema wants more female Rotarians to take up bigger responsibilities like the presidency and handle important district posts. She spoke of the many fine leadership qualities amongst women which Rotary should take advantage of. She wants male Rotarians to support their female counterparts. She spoke glowingly about the fact that in this Rotary year, there are 16 lady club presidents, a lady governor and yet another lady Governor next year as evidence of the progress women are making in Rotary in our district. PP Rema emphasised that women can play a strong complementary role to men in strengthening Rotary and build a stronger Rotary district.

From the floor, PDG Dato’ Jimmy Lim spoke on the need to get more youths into Rotary. He lamented on the very low rate of Interactors and Rotaractors finally becoming Rotarians and greater efforts are needed to attract more youths to join Rotary. Rotarian Michael Oh of RC Tropicana Damansara dwelt on some of the reasons why the majority of youths stay away from Rotary while Rotarian Chris Pressling of RC Kuala Kangsar spoke about the need for establishing more RCC (Rotary Community corps) and satellite clubs.

The attendance at the fifth plenary session was in fact very encouraging and this must be a reflection of the concerns of the Rotarians about our membership woes. The 4 panelists acquainted themselves very well and covered a broad range of issues confronting membership in Rotary. Their comments were well received by the Rotarians who were at the session and even PDG Mustain from was impressed by the panel and the discussions. We must applaud Governor Kirenjit kaur and moderator PDG Leslie Salehudin for coming up with this idea and we hope the lessons learnt from this panel discussion will help us in our membership growth.

What the 104-mile Miles to End Polio bike ride meant to the Rotary staff members

The six-person Rotary International staff team and other Miles to End Polio participants take a photo to tweet after their ride.

For six staff members from Rotary headquarters in Evanston, the fight to eradicate polio has become personal. Together, they biked the physically grueling 104-mile (167-kilometer) Tour de Tucson in Arizona, USA, collectively raising more than $20,000 for polio eradication while putting their bodies and minds through a feat of endurance.

For the tightknit group, the experience was about more than just raising money and crossing the finish line. It was about learning about each other and what Rotary members are doing to rid the world of this crippling disease. They advocated together, trained together, and promoted each other's fundraising efforts. The total fundraising campaign was a huge success, yielding more than $9 million from the participation of 100 Rotary members and staff once the current 2-to-1 match by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is figured in. But the camaraderie of the team, and the magnitude of the cause, is what the staff from Evanston say they will remember most.

Here's more from staff members about what their 104-mile ride meant to them.

Thomas Woods, Stewardship:

One of the things that struck me was how much the word "team" truly applied. Finishing the challenging El Tour de Tucson ride would not have been possible without all the work of the Rotary team. I saw this in action when one of our teammates, Naish Shah, had to pull over when his chain fell off. [Adam Arents, Rotarian Tom Drennan, and I] pulled over and worked with Naish to get his chain back on his gear. John Hewko, who finished before our group, rode back to meet us so we could cross the finish line together.

I felt like these experiences were a microcosm of the entire Miles to End Polio experience, from the planning, training, and fundraising. We [Rotary staff riders] did all of it as a team. I could not have crossed the finish line without them.

ROTARY INTERNATIONAL NEWS

Adam Arents, Learning Resources:

Throughout the ride I reminded myself to look up from the pavement to the scene around me, which held hills covered in saguaro cacti, cheering Tucson residents clanging cowbells, the rocky peaks of the Catalina Mountains. I particularly enjoyed the two mariachi bands posted along the route. Even the weariest of cyclists couldn't help but smile as they rode past a full band of musicians playing with gusto.

There was also an easy camaraderie among the riders, who pulled alongside to chat with each other or help someone fix a flat tire. It was always nice to see another End Polio Now jersey ahead. It was encouraging to hear words of appreciation and support from Rotarians who were glad to have Rotary staff members be a part of their team. I'm grateful to be part of such a committed group who worked so hard to train and raise funds for the fight to end polio.

Alison Randall, Rotary Grants:

With more than 8,000 riders, I was prepared to see a lot of bikes. I never rode in a group before, so it was a little scary. The cyclists in the ride were fast, zipping past me on my left and right. Since this ride wasn't a race, I decided to go at my own pace. I was told that the course was hilly, so I did some of my training in Michigan, where there were rolling hills. But the Tucson hills are like mountains. There was one climb where I thought I was going to start rolling backwards. It felt so good to reach the top. I hit about 35 miles per hour coming back down.

Parts of the ride I found myself completely alone, just me, my bike, and the mountains. Then a rider with an End Polio Now jersey would pass me and I was reminded that I wasn't alone. And that I had the support of my work colleagues and the other Rotary riders. I made so many friends during this experience, friends that came together with one goal in mind, to help End Polio Now.

Kristin Brown, Rotary Service:

The course was spectacular. There were beautiful vistas and a deep blue desert sky with mountains as the backdrop. There was a long, steady climb from miles 50 to 70, followed by the fastest 10 miles I've ever ridden in my life. One of our teammates, Naish Shah, needed new cleats. It was amazing to see the volunteers and other riders come together to help him out. Naish showed his dedication to the event by actually raising funds during the ride. He got one cash donation from a biker who rode along with him.

Bike holders! At every stop we had volunteers standing ready to literally hold our bikes while we filled our water bottles, applied sunscreen, grabbed a snack, or to tweet out our progress.

Catherine Lankford, IT Operations:

El Tour definitely came with challenges (a steep climb and a flat tire), but I truly can't imagine having more fun or enjoying my ride any more than I did. There were sections of the course that really gave me a chance to absorb and appreciate the land and the fact that I was in the midst of riding a 104-mile route when less than a year before I had a cast and [was] reliant on crutches after having foot surgery.

I was overwhelmed by how beautiful the desert is and how thrilled I was to be on a bike.

One of the more unexpected highlights was the support from spectators. Supporters were scattered throughout the course cheering on the riders and I can't describe how awesome it was hearing the cheers for "Go Rotary Rider!" and the high fives and excitement from others when my jersey was recognized. It was from this kind of support and excitement that it really hit me what an awesome thing we were doing -- we were all out there eradicating polio through some pretty impressive raising of funds and awareness. So grateful to have had such an amazing experience!
