According to this story, when they went to Isabel la Católica to give her the news of the town and of a battle that had taken place near the town (probably the legend refers to a clash between the Muslims headed by El Zagal and the Christian troops, which gave rise to the name of the arroyo de Matanza), before the messenger finished the queen stopped him and said: Sé de ella (I know about it). This version has little historical backing but it lends itself to the legend of the name of Sedella . 60 TALES AND LEGENDS • SEDELLA A rather macabre legend tells the story of Moreno something new on that day, no matter what. In Sedella Arce, better known as Morenito (Swarthy), who was this tradition takes on another peculiar dimension as it born and lived in the town towards the end of the XVI is suggested that inhabitants did not wash as anyone century. The story goes that disease and could catch verrucas. one lunch time he heard the foreman of a gang of reapers insult his father. The impetuous young man, without a word, jumped on the foreman, cut off his ear and sitting on him, already earless, he finished his meal. Reported by one of his cousins for all his crimes and his demeanors, he was discovered in a cave, was executed, then quartered, and as an example to the town his members were scattered on the access road to the town. As a result the road was named by stretches, according to the part of the accused that had been placed there, in other words: stretch of the head, stretch of the leg, stretch of the arm, etc. An interesting tradition is the one related to Palm Sunday, widely accepted in Christendom, which suggests that believers should wear new clothes or 61 INDEX OF NAMES AND PLACES NAME TOWN PAGE Alí ibm Ahmd ibn Muhammad Al-Hasní Sayalonga 58 Almanzor Abo-Amir Muhammad Ben Abi Mer Torrox 62 Antonio de Canillas Canillas de Aceituno 24 Antonio Molina Totalán 64 Antonio Ortega Escalona Vélez-Málaga 66 Avelino Aurelio Ramos Acosta Cómpeta 32 Baltasar de la Peña y Avilés Colmenar 28 Eduardo Ocón y Rivas Benamocarra 22 Enrique Castillo Totalán 64 Enrique Ramos Ramos Algarrobo 12 Evaristo Guerra Zamora Vélez-Málaga 66 Félix Lomas Martín Canillas de Albaida 26 Gonzalo Fernández de Coalla Colmenar 28 Hernando el Darra Frigiliana 38 Hisio Francisco Centurión Nerja 48 José A. • Guide to Frigiliana
496 Bristol Road, Selly Oak, Birmingham B29 6BD. Tel: 0121 472 1541 www.SpainAway.com [email protected] Guide To Frigiliana Introduction Situated 300 m above sea level, and occupying 39.74 sq km, with a population of over 3,500, and enjoying spectacular panoramic views, Frigiliana is the epitome of the Spanish whitewashed village (or pueblo blanco), and indeed has been voted ‘The prettiest village in Andalucia’. The name ‘Frigiliana’ is believed to have Roman origins, signifying ‘place of the ash tree’ (Fraxinus, in Latin), although, needless to say, there are alternative explanations put forward, the most prominent being that it derives from a Roman land owner named Frexinius. The reason for its white colouration is threefold. Firstly, the colour white is holy in Catholic beliefs, and therefore when the Christians took over a village from the Islamic Moors, they painted it white for God to see that it was now a Christian village. Secondly, the lime that is used in the whitewashing of the walls has an antibacterial effect, repelling insects that could otherwise destroy their construction. The third reason is of course that white reflects the heat more effectively, and hence makes the houses cooler in the summer. Having said all of this, it is only since 1971 that Frigiliana has actually been as beautifully white as it is now – under a law imposed by the then mayor. Sometimes Frigiliana is known as the ‘Village of the Three Cultures’, as represented by the symbol opposite. This is intended to reflect the hundreds of years in which Muslims, Christians and Jews lived here in complete tolerance and harmony.

Málaga professional cruise handbook_ Welcometoasmilingdestination index_ COVID-19 SAFE FULL EXPERIENCE “The views at dawn show a city of contrasts: the Arabic _ fortress and castle on the top of the mountain, the city center by the port, churches here and there, modern buildings full of life and business, beaches awaiting to be enjoyed in just a few hours... My friends and I are playing a game in this cruise. Each visit is decided only by one of us, so at this time today I don’t know yet if I am going to visit the city, Costa del Sol, or maybe Cordoba or Granada. For sure we will try some local dishes and do some shopping. Or maybe not, and we have some other adventure for today? It’s time to smile, go and see…” welcome BACK TO INDEX Cruise facilities& services _ The Port of Málaga is located in Southern Spain, and because of its strategic location it can be considered in routes to the Med & to the Atlantic, both North & South. It provides aneasy access for ships, and trouble-free weather conditions all year round, as for winds and waves, which aremostly under 0.5m. Tides are not an issue either, with atide level range of max. 0.80m. The port has been completely renewed and enlarged in just a few years, now boosting 5 cruise-dedicated berths, 3 state-of-the-art terminals and a wide range of services for cruise lines and cruise guests, a great option for transit and also homeport in Southern Europe.
