La vertiente sur se enclava en la comarca malagueña de la Axarquía, limitando en la franja próxima al litoral mediterráneo con el Paraje Natural Acantilados de Maro-Cerro Gordo, y se distribuye entre los términos municipales de Alcaucín, Canillas de Aceituno, Canillas de Albaida, Cómpeta, Frigiliana, Nerja, Sedella y Salares. La vertiente norte se eleva sobre las llanuras altas de las Tierras de Alhama, en la comarca del Poniente Granadino e incluye parte de los municipios de Alhama de Granada, Arenas del Rey, Jayena y Otívar. Además de los citados municipios, en el ámbito de la ZEC se localiza una Entidad de Ámbito Territorial Inferior al Municipio, Fornes (dentro de Arenas del Rey) y una Entidad Local Autónoma, Ventas de Zafarraya (incluida en Alhama de Granada). Las singulares características de este espacio natural, con una localización intermedia entre las sierras y la costa mediterránea, así como su posición también intermedia entre las cuencas hidrológicas del Guadalquivir y Sur, el marcado gradiente altitudinal, su gran extensión, y la riqueza faunística y florística, hacen uno de los enclaves montañosos de mayor importancia natural de Andalucía suroriental. Este espacio se encuadra en el conjunto de las sierras penibéticas, en un ámbito donde destacan otros espacios pertenecientes a la Red Ecológica Europea Natura 2000 como la Sierra de Loja, la Sierra de Camarolos, Sierra Nevada, o el Torcal de Antequera. También es oportuno mencionar el Paraje Natural Acantilados de Maro-Cerro Gordo, el cual prácticamente constituye una continuación del Parque Natural. La amplia variedad de enclaves de elevada calidad paisajística, alguno de ellos relacionados con el agua, también constituye uno de los principales valores del ámbito de la ZEC, junto con el predominio de masas arbóreas de identidad y el excelso potencial de vistas de singular calidad, consecuencia de la elevada altitud y pendientes. La identidad del paisaje se refuerza con el colorido y las características fisiográficas entre sectores marmóreos y esquistosos o margosos, que contrasta respecto al entorno. 1 VALORES AMBIENTALES DE LA ZONA ESPECIAL DE CONSERVACIÓN SIERRAS DE TEJEDA, ALMIJARA Y ALHAMA (ES6170007) Figura 1. La representación gráfica de estos límites se corresponde con una precisión de detalle realizada sobre la escala 1.10.000, sobre la ortofotografía color del Ministerio de Fomento y la Junta de Andalucía, con tamaño de píxel 0,5 metros y de fecha 2010-2011, de los límites aprobados en la octava lista actualizada de Lugares de Interés Comunitario de la región biogeográfica mediterránea, adoptada por Decisión de Ejecución de la Comisión de 3 de diciembre de 2014. 3 SITUACIÓN ADMINISTRATIVA 3.1 FIGURAS DE PROTECCIÓN La ZEC Sierras de Tejeda, Almijara y Alhama, fue incluida en la lista de Lugares de Interés Comunitario (LIC) de la Región Biogeográfica Mediterránea como paso previo a su declaración como ZEC por medio del Decreto 2/2016, de 16 de enero, por el que se declara la Zona Especial de Conservación Sierras de Tejeda, Almijara y Alhama (ES6170007) y se aprueban el Plan de Ordenación de los Recursos Naturales y el Plan Rector de Uso y Gestión del Parque Natural Sierras de Tejeda, Almijara y Alhama (BOJA nº 15 de 25 de enero de 2016). Con anterioridad, como consecuencia de las numerosas especies de aves presentes, incluidas en el Anexo I de la Directiva 2009/147/CE del Parlamento Europeo y del Consejo de 30 de noviembre de 2009 relativa a la conservación de las aves silvestres (en adelante Directiva Aves) (que derogó a la Directiva 79/409/CEE, de 2 de abril, relativa a la conservación de las aves silvestres y a sus modificaciones posteriores, motivaron la designación, en octubre de 2002, del ámbito del espacio como Zona de Especial Protección para las Aves (ZEPA). En 2011, este espacio se declaró el Monumento Natural "Los Tajos del Alcázar" mediante el Decreto 383/2011, de 30 de diciembre, por el que se declaran determinados Monumentos Naturales de Andalucía en la provincia de Málaga y se dictan normas y directrices para su ordenación y gestión.
