Diverse peoples acquired economic and political hegemony, they imposed laws, customs and artistic models which merged with pre-existing backgrounds and styles which then expanded throughout Northern European and African countries. Ideas from the East, such as science, religion and artistic models, fil- tered throughout the Mediterranean. Nomadic populations reached Mediterranean shores and so cultures and customs were brought to- gether for several centuries in a relatively small circle. It was on the edges of the Mediterranean where the two fundamental ideas of gar- den design, the formal and the informal, were created and confronted each other. Here, the garden became the idealization of a perfect and immutable world, the mimesis of nature. -

ABSTRACT My thesis explores the construction of the New World mythology as it appears in early modern Italian epic poems. It focuses on how Italian writers engage with and contribute to this process of myth-creation; how the newly created mythology relates to the political, social and cultural context of the time; and investigates extent to which it was affected by the personal agendas of the poets. By analysing three New World myths (Brazilian Amazons, Patagonian giants and Canadian pygmies), it provides insights into the perception that Italians had of the newly discovered lands in the Sixteenth and Seventeenth Centuries, as well as providing a greater understanding of the role that early modern Italy had in the ‘invention’ of the Americas. -

An Inquiry Into Surrealism in The
LANDSCAPES OF REVELATION: AN INQUIRY INTO SURREALISM IN THE LANDSCAPE by MICAH S. LIPSCOMB (Under the Direction of Judith Wasserman) ABSTRACT This thesis explores landscapes in which visitors can become emotionally and perceptually disoriented and imagine they are in a dream-like space. The surreal landscapes discussed range from an Italian Renaissance garden, to contemporary landscapes designed by professionals, to environments created by visionary artists. These diverse landscapes share elements of the art and literary movement of surrealism, especially their goal of eliciting revelations. The purpose of this thesis is three-fold: first, to analyze the techniques and forms that help create a surreal landscape; second, to elucidate the relationship between surrealism and landscape architecture; and third, to demonstrate the relevance of some of the ideas of surrealism to contemporary landscape architecture.
