MALAY HERITAGE CENTRE MEDIA FACTSHEET ABOUT THE MALAY HERITAGE CENTRE Officially opened by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong in June 2005, the Malay Heritage Centre (MHC) showcases the history, culture and contributions of the Malay community within the context of Singapore‟s history and multi-cultural society. Re-opening on 1 September 2012, MHC‟s refurbished permanent galleries will be home to a collection of interesting artefacts that support its new focus on Kampong Gelam‟s history as a bustling port town integral to the development of the Malay community as well as Singapore‟s connections to the region. Through its exhibits, programmes and activities, MHC aspires to be a vibrant destination of historical and cultural significance for both Singaporeans and international visitors. It also hopes to honour the past of the Malay community while providing a means for the community‟s present-day expression. The Malay Heritage Centre is under the management of the National Heritage Board in partnership with the Malay Heritage Foundation. First, the discussion seeks to understand the concepts of nationalism and patriotism and how they relate to one another. In respect to the more criti- cal literature concerning nationalism, it asks whether these two concepts are as different as is sometimes assumed. Furthermore, by problematizing nation-branding as an “updated” form of nationalism, it seeks to understand whether we are facing the possible emergence of a new type of nationalism. Second, the study endeavors to discursively analyze the ”bottom-up” processes of national reproduction and re-definition in an online, post-socialist context through an empirical examination of the online debate and polemic about the new Polish patriotism. The dissertation argues that approaching nationalism as a broad phenomenon and ideology which operates discursively is helpful for understanding patriotism as an element of the na- tionalist rhetoric that can be employed to study national unity, sameness, and difference. Emphasizing patriotism within the Central European context as neither an alternative to nor as a type of nationalism may make it possible to explain the popularity and continuous endur- ance of nationalism and of practices of national identification in different and changing con- texts. -

ASIATIC, VOLUME 7, NUMBER 2, DECEMBER 2013 Notes on Why Friends, Why Friendship into Poems Edwin Thumboo1 National University of Singapore Abstract History is especially important in a nation that does not have a long past. For the writer who has to work in cross-cultural terms, the study of English Literature would have stressed the importance of a working history, tapped to provide a sense of context, location and continuity. This is the case with Singapore, which is without a direct historical hinterland. But because it is small, economically strong and politically stable, there is need for the writer to construct missing continuities. This he does by looking not only at the past, but also into the present, its multi-racial, multi-ethnic character. For the present case, friends are both the crystallisation and detailing of this precise historical context, essential for the penetration of both contemporary culture as well as their antecedents. They represent experience as well as repository, a combination that makes them excellent conduits. In the case of Singapore, these cultures mean for the writer specifically the Chinese, Indian, Malay and Eurasian. Keywords Friendship, history, nation-making, linkages, colonialism, cross-cultural creativity Octogenarians who were born, grew up and spent most of their lives at home in Southeast Asia lived, inter alia, through colonialism, war, military occupation, liberation, post-war recovery, the traumas that can follow the first flush of sovereign independence, the mobilisation of nationalism as a constructive force, the search for identity, cross-cultural encounters and an accelerating globalisation. Each would have been close, personal, with some of their forces still unravelling. -

Supervisor: Professor Elissa Helms Budapest, Hungary 2014 CEU eTD Collection I Abstract This research is about the discursive battle between radical Bengali nationalists and the Islamist supporters of accused and convicted war criminals in Bangladesh where the gendered issues are used as weapons. In Bangladesh, the online discursive frontier emerged from 2005 as a continuing battle extending from the 1971 Liberation War when the punishment of war criminals and war rapists became one of the central issues of political and public discourse. This online community emerged with debate about identity contest between the Bengali nationalist ‘pro-Liberation War’ and the ‘Islamist’ supporters of the accused war criminals. These online discourses created the background of Shahbag protest 2013 demanding the capital punishment of one convicted criminal and at the time of the protest, the online community played a significant role in that protest. In this research as a past participant of Shahbag protest, I examined this online discourse and there gendered and masculine expression. To do that I problematized the idea of Bengali and/or Muslim women which is related to the identity contest. I examined that, to protest the misogynist propaganda of Islamist fundamentalists in Bangladesh, feminists and women’s organizations are aligning themselves with Bengali nationalism and thus cannot be critical about the gendered notions of nationalism. I therefore, tried to make a feminist scholarly attempt to be critical of the misogynist and gendered notion of both the Islamists and Bengali nationalists to contribute not only a critical examination of masculine nationalist rhetoric, but will also to problematize that developmentalist feminist approach. -

ARTICLE Zubir Said: A Man Made of Music by Perera, Loretta Marie, written in August 2010 National Library Board, Singapore Driven by his love for music, Zubir Said’s work, headlined by Singapore’s national anthem Majulah Singapura, has become an important part of the nation’s history and culture. Despite rapid social change and development, his traditional yet modern works, underscored by a timeless sensibility, remain as relevant and evocative as they have always been. Born in Bukittinggi, Minangkabau in West Sumatra, Indonesia, on July 22, 1907, Zubir Said grew up under the care of his uncle, a musician, after the death of his mother when he was seven years old. He never had an interest in studies until a teacher introduced him to Solfa music, the teaching of notes sung to a syllable ( do, re, mi). This served as the starting point of what would become a lifelong love affair with music. Once regarded as “the most respected maestro in both practical and theoretical aspects of Malay music”, Zubir showed a strong inclination towards music from an early age, learning the flute in primary school, followed by the guitar and drums in middle school. Despite strong objections from his father, who wanted his eldest child to succeed him as village chieftain, he became a member of a keroncong group instead. While travelling through Sumatra with his group, a sailor friend told him of the “glittering lights, kopi susu (coffee with milk) and butter” of Singapore. He then made his way to Singapore in the hope of developing a career in music. -

However, the literature on civil religion is divided between those who attribute it to bottom-up cultural spontaneity and those who see it as an ideological top-down construction. Moreover, there has been a relative lack of scholarly attention to Korean civil religion. This paper addresses both issues by arguing that a strong civil religion indeed exists in the country and that it has been an important part of the “nation-building” process since the founding of the Republic of Korea in 1948. The paper highlights how a succession of authoritarian regimes (1948–1987) successfully mobilized a strong civil religion for political purposes. The resulting civil religion targeted economic growth as the national goal to overcome all social ills, focused on the country’s ethnic and cultural homogeneity to boost national confidence and pride, exalted its traditional religions, especially Confucianism, as repositories of Korean traditional culture, and rendered sacred meanings to national symbols such as the flag and national anthem. Even after democratization, Korean civil religion remains largely ideological, as the Korean government is heavily involved in framing, planning, sponsoring, and promoting the country’s civil religion. -

Feminist Patriots Opposing the Far Right in Contemporary Poland https://doi.org/10.1515/culture-2019-0040 Received October 30, 2018; accepted May 30, 2019 Abstract: Due to the attempts to restrict the abortion law in Poland in 2016, we could observe a new broad- based feminist movement emerge. This successful movement became known worldwide through the Black Protests and the massive Polish Women’s Strike that took place in October 2016. While this new movement is impressive in its scope and can be described as one of the most successful opposition movements to the ethno-nationalist right wing and fundamentalist Catholicism, it also deploys a patriotic rhetoric and makes use of national symbols and categories of belonging. Feminism and nationalism in Poland are usually described as in opposition, although that relationship is much more complex and changing. Over decades, a general shift towards right-wing nationalism in Poland has occurred, which, in various ways, has also affected feminist actors and (counter)discourses. It seems that patriotism is used to combat nationalism, which has proved to be a successful strategy. Taking the example of feminist mobilizations and movements in Poland, this paper discusses the (im)possible link between patriotism, nationalism and feminism in order to ask what it means for feminist politics and female solidarity when belonging is framed in different ways.
