Automated fare collection (AFC) system is the collection of hardware and software components that automates the ticketing system of the public transportation network. For long years ticketing at city public transport has been done manually. AFC brings speed, economy, and security to the ticketing procedure, while it is usually a part of a Smart City platform.

A Smart city is a concept for urban areas that uses the same smartcard for different types of applications where all systems are either managed or controlled by a centralized computer network. This includes data collection and control from several public utilities like public transport fare collection, parking lots, taxi, pay roads, highway toll collection, shuttles management, gas & electric charges , museum fees, national park entrance fees, to entertainment halls, sports, theatres and much more ... System collects data from applications, citizens, devices, and assets. The consolidated information can be processed and analyzed at the city management to optimize the efficiency of the city operations and services.

Description of the AFC system

The Fare collection system consists of following components:

 Cards & tickets  Validators & POS terminals- Devices to read/write media  Passenger information – Mobile app’s and onboard bus displays  Turnstiles for metro and closed bus stations  Depot/station computers  Back office systems  Central clearing house

Cards and Tickets

The cards have a smart chip inside which works with the radio power supplied by the readers and validators. The card can be used for private and public utilities for payment applications like bus fare collection, parking lots payment , taxi, pay roads, highway toll collection etc. Apart from payment, the cards can be used for other applications like access control to entertainment halls, sports, theatres and much more ...

MIFARE Classic MIFARE Classic started a revolution in the contactless business at 1994. Today, the card is used in a variety of applications worldwide. Almost 10 billion mifare cards are used up till now. The solutions provide excellent robustness, easy handling, RF performance and optimized usage

MIFARE Ultralight MIFARE® Ultralight-based tickets offer an ideal solution for low-cost, high-volume applications such as public transport, loyalty cards and event ticketing. They serve as a perfect contactless replacement for magnetic stripe, barcode, or QR-code systems. The introduction of the contactless MIFARE Ultralight for limited-use applications can lead to reduced system installation and maintenance costs.

MIFARE Plus Migrate systems to the next . MIFARE Plus® brings system up to benchmark AES security with Certification EAL4+. After personalization, MIFARE Plus uses its “backward compatible mode” to behave like MIFARE Classic.

MIFARE DESFire Based on open global standards for both RF interface and cryptographic methods, MIFARE DESFire product family provides highly secure microcontroller-based cards. Its name DESFire references the use of DES, 2K3DES, 3K3DES, and AES hardware cryptographic engines for securing transmission data. MIFARE DESFire products enable multi-application smart card solutions for identity, access control, loyalty, and micropayment applications, as well as in transport schemes

Passenger information

Mobile app’s and onboard bus displays

The Passenger Information System takes the GPS location information of the busses from the validators. The central software evaluates the received data and transfers the calculated information to passengers in real time, over mobile apps, on-board screens, and bus stop monitors.

Passengers can take relevant information any time by using their mobile phones by downloading the free application on IOS and Android shops.

Passengers in the bus, can see the current position of the bus on the route and the name of bus stations that the bus will arrive. The information displays are mounted at the ceiling and the information can be monitored by the passengers from a distance up to 10 meters.

Outdoor information systems can be installed at central stations, city centers metro stations and bus stops. Each information system contains a powerful industrial computer system connected to a LED monitor that is capable to display at outdoor light conditions. The info system is connected to the system server over the GPRS or 3G wireless GSM data network.

The system is capable of displaying real time information to passengers at bus stops. People can monitor the departure and arrival times of busses, type of vehicles, map view of the present bus location, and possible arriving time to the bus stop.

Automatic vehicle management and fare collection systems are used in conjunction to present the service to passengers.

The On-Board Passenger Information display is capable of giving audio verbal info to passengers besides the visual text information.

Self-service card reload stations

Payment with cash and credit card

Figure 1 : General system topology for fare collection system

The passengers can reload credit to their cards at manual cashiers or automatic pay stations. Self-service pay stations have the advantage of working 7/24 without any break. This gives an economic advantage to automatic stations compared to manual cashiers which needs at least 4 persons to be hired for each station.

Fare collection system uses radio frequency contactless cards and tickets as payment method. The contactless tickets are not reloadable and can be used for limited number of rides. For example, if the purchased ticket is a 5-ride ticket, the ticket can be used for only two rides and need to throw away after this. But smartcards can be used by reloading credit every time it is needed.

For frequent users, purchasing a smartcard is more logical than using smart tickets as the cost of a ticket per ride is always higher than a smartcard user who frequently use the transit system.
