Ritualistic circumambulations in different kinds of vehicles called Vahanams are an important part of the festivities. In olden times, idols were carried by elephants, however, the practice was given up after an elephant ran amok. Now, a number of priests carry the idols in special Vahanams placed on their shoulders. Six kinds of vehicles are used for these processions. These are the Simhasana Vahanam (Throne), Anantha Vahanam (Serpent), Kamala Vahanam (Lotus), Pallakku Vahanam (Palanquin), Garuda Vahanam (Garuda) and Indra Vahanam (Gopuram). Of these , the Pallakku and Garuda Vahanas are repeated twice and four times respectively. The Garuda Vahanam is considered as the favourite conveyance of the Lord. The different days on which the Vahanams are taken out for procession are as follows: Simhasana Vahanam, Anantha Vahanam, Kamala Vahanam, Pallakku Vahanam, Garuda Vahanam, Indra Vahanam, Pallakku Vahanam and Garuda Vahanam on the following days. • The Padmanabhaswamy Temple Case
The Padmanabhaswamy Temple Case drishtiias.com/printpdf/the-padmanabhaswamy-temple-case Why in News Recently, the Supreme Court of India upheld the right of the Travancore royal family to manage the property of deity at Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple in Thiruvananthapuram (Kerala). The Temple has been in the news since 2011 after the discovery of treasure worth over Rs. 1 lakh crore in its underground vaults. Key Points 1/3 Judgement: The Supreme Court (SC) reversed the 2011 Kerala High Court decision, which had directed the Kerala government to set up a trust to control the management and assets of the temple. The High Court (HC) had ruled that the successor to the erstwhile royals could not claim to be in control of the Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple after the amendment of definition of ‘Ruler’ in Article 366 (22) of the Constitution of India. The definition of Ruler was amended by the Twenty Sixth (Constitutional) Amendment Act, 1971, which abolished the privy purses. Article 366 (22) reads, “Ruler” means the Prince, Chief or other person who, at any time before the commencement of the Twenty Sixth (Constitutional) Amendment Act, 1971, was recognised as the Ruler of an Indian State or was recognised as the successor of such Ruler. However, the SC rejected this and said that, as per customary law, the members of the royal family have the shebait rights even after the death of the last ruler. Shebait rights means right to manage the financial affairs of the deity. The SC held that, for the purpose of shebait rights the definition of Ruler would apply and would transfer to the successor.

Newsletter Archives www.dollsofindia.com Five Hindu Temples Shrouded in Mystery Copyright © 2017, DollsofIndia India is a land of myriad temples and other sacred places of worship. According to experts, Hindu temples did not exist before or during the Vedic period (1500-500 BC). The concept of idol worship came into existence only after this era - this in turn gave rise to the construction of shrines and temples of all shapes and sizes. Most of the major Hindu temples are truly amazing, jaw-dropping creations, which inspire a sense of awe and wonder in us. Yet others give rise to a totally different sensation in us - that of being in a mystical; sort of magical and surreal location. In this post, we bring you a feature on five major Hindu temples, which seem unusually numinous and are shrouded in mystery and mysticism. Konark Sun Temple The Konark Sun Temple, also referred to as Konarak Sun Temple and Surya Deula, was built in 13th century CE. Located about 35 kilometers northeast of Puri, it lies along the coastline of Odisha. This temple is attributed to King Narasimhadeva of the Eastern Ganga Dynasty (around 1250 CE). Dedicated to Surya (the Sun God), this structure is presently a 100-foot high chariot with huge wheels and horses; all carved from stone. Today, much of the temple is in ruins. A large shikhara, which rose high above the present mandapa, has unfortunately fallen off. The surviving structure is famed for its intricate sculpture, artwork and themes including the erotic Kama and Mithuna scenes. Built in the typical Oriyan style of temple architecture, it stood over 200 feet high before the start of its ruin.

  • Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple Treasure Verdict
www.gradeup.co 1 www.gradeup.co Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple Treasure Verdict Why is it in the news? The Supreme Court has upheld the right of the Travancore royal family to manage the property of deity Sree Padmanabha Swamy Temple in Thiruvananthapuram. This reversed the 2011 Kerala High Court decision. What is the case about? The Travancore royal family had challenged the Kerala high court ruling that had held that the royal family could not claim to be in control or management of the temple as the successor to the last ruler. The central legal question before the Supreme Court was whether UtradamThirunalMarthanda Varma, the younger brother of ChithiraThirunal Balarama Varma, the last Ruler of Travancore, could claim to be the “Ruler of Travancore” after the death of the ruler in 1991. The court examined this claim within the limited meaning of that term according to the Travancore- Cochin Hindu Religious Institutions Act, 1950 to claim ownership, control, and management of the ancient Sree Padmanabha Swamy Temple. What has the Supreme Court’s Judgement delivered? 1. Management of Financial Affairs The Supreme Court restored rights of “Managership or the Shebaitship” of Sree Padmanabhaswamy temple at Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala to the royal family of Travancore. According to the court, as per customary law, the shebait rights (right to manage the financial affairs of the deity) survive with the members of the family even after the death of the last ruler. The ruling ends the legal battle the temple and members of the royal family have fought with the government for decades over control of one of the richest temples in the world.

  • Minority and Majority Concerns About Institutional Religious Liberty in India
religions Article Litigating the Limits of Religion: Minority and Majority Concerns about Institutional Religious Liberty in India Chad M. Bauman Department of Philosophy, Religion, and Classics, Butler University, Indianapolis, IN 46208, USA; [email protected] Abstract: Western religious liberty advocates tend to focus on restrictions placed on minority reli- gious communities, particularly when advocating abroad, that is, outside of the country in which they reside. In all contemporary democracies, however, adherents of religious majorities also express concerns about religious liberty. For this reason, the article considers both minority and majority concerns about institutional religious freedom in India. This essay provides an overview of religious freedom issues, with a particular focus on institutions, though, as I acknowledge, it is not always simple to distinguish individual from institutional matters of religious freedom. After describing various minority and majority concerns about institutional religious freedom in India, and demon- strating that many of them are related to the Indian government’s distinctive approach to managing religion and religious institutions, I make the argument that while some cross-cutting issues provide the possibility of interreligious understanding and solidarity in matters of religious liberty advocacy, such solidarity will not emerge without considerable effort because of the fact that debates about religious liberty in India often fundamentally involve debates about the very nature of religion itself, and these debates tend to divide rather than unite India’s majority and minority religious communities. Litigating the Limits of Religion: Keywords: Hindu; Christian; law; restriction; religion; religious freedom; India; minority; majority; Minority and Majority Concerns legal; regulation; temples; churches; mosques about Institutional Religious Liberty in India.
