This paper is based on an analysis of a corpus of composite sources. We will compare the statements explaining the history of the construction of the church in the sources written after the death of the queen to the records produced when she was alive. -
Conflict Prevention in the Greater Horn of Africa
UNITED STATES INSTITUTE OF PEACE Simulation on Conflict Prevention in the Greater Horn of Africa This simulation, while focused around the Ethiopia-Eritrea border conflict, is not an attempt to resolve that conflict: the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) already has a peace plan on the table to which the two parties in conflict have essentially agreed. Rather, participants are asked, in their roles as representatives of OAU member states, to devise a blueprint for preventing the Ethiopian-Eritrean conflict from spreading into neighboring countries and consuming the region in even greater violence. The conflict, a great concern particularly for Somalia and Sudan where civil wars have raged for years, has thrown regional alliances into confusion and is increasingly putting pressure on humanitarian NGOs and other regional parties to contain the conflict. The wars in the Horn of Africa have caused untold death and misery over the past few decades. Simulation participants are asked as well to deal with the many refugees and internally displaced persons in the Horn of Africa, a humanitarian crisis that strains the economies – and the political relations - of the countries in the region. In their roles as OAU representatives, participants in this intricate simulation witness first-hand the tremendous challenge of trying to obtain consensus among multiple actors with often competing agendas on the tools of conflict prevention. New history. We understand the new history generally in the same way as the representatives of Marxist history. It is a history of establishment of new social-economic formation – capitalism, which, in difference to the previous formations, uses the economic impelling and the big machine production. The most important classes are bourgeoisie and hired workers, in the last time the number of the employees in the sphere of service increases. The peasants decrease in number, the movement of peasants into towns takes place; the remaining peasants become the independent farmers, who are involved into the ware and money economy. In the political sphere it is an epoch of establishment of the republican system, which is profitable first of all for the bourgeoisie, with the time the political rights and liberties are extended for all the population. In the spiritual plan it is an epoch of the upper mental, or causal (later lower intuitive) plan, the humans discover the laws of development of the world and man, the traditional explanations of religion already do not suffice. The time of the swift development of technique (Satan was loosed out of his prison, according to Revelation 20.7), which causes finally the global ecological problems. -

This is the accepted version of a forthcoming article that will be published by Cambridge University Press in The Journal of African History: https://www.cambridge.org/core/journals/journal-of-african-history/all-issues Accepted version downloaded from SOAS Research Online: http://eprints.soas.ac.uk/24350/ History in twentieth-century Ethiopia: The ‘Great Tradition’ and the counter-histories of national failure SARA MARZAGORA, SOAS UNIVERSITY OF LONDON ABSTRACT Drawing from both fictional and non-fictional sources, this article traces the way history was conceptualised in twentieth century Ethiopia by secular educated elites, charting out the changing power relations between Ethiopia‘s hegemonic historiographical paradigm, and the alternative historical visions that challenged this ‗Great Tradition‘ over the course of the century. While the Great Tradition extols Ethiopia‘s past and future glories, the counter-histories focused instead on the country‘s failure to develop and democratise. Against the interpretation that the counter-histories supplanted the Great Tradition in the late 1960s, the article examines them in terms of complementarity. The intellectual interventions of young student radicals in the late 1960s constitute a break, but not a drastic paradigm shift, from the past. The Great Tradition had already been put into question by older generations of intellectuals, even if they proved unable or unwilling to translate their disillusionment in political action. Indeed, it has long been known that Muslim communities and Islamic sultanates flourished in Ethiopia and bordering lands during the medieval centuries. However, despite a sizeable amount of Ethiopian Christian documents (in Gǝʿǝz) relating to their Muslim neighbors and valuable Arabic literary sources produced outside Ethiopia and, in some cases, emanating from Ethiopian communities themselves, the Islamic presence in Ethiopia remains difficult to apprehend. -

One of the factors is the fact that Ethiopia has been largely isolated following the decline of the Axum (Aksum) civilization around 700 A.D. Unlike most ancient civilizations, the history of Axum is unknown in the mainstream and some historians are surprised when they somehow learn about it and wonder why they had not learned about it in the universities. Ethiopia has a rich history of at least three thousand years. Its prehistory, the Aksum civilization and the last one thousand and three hundred years of its history are fascinating. Thanks to the internet, Ethiopian history and culture is increasingly being known today, overcoming past prejudices and biases. This is good not only for Ethiopia, but also for many who are interested in history, culture and religion. It is good for Ethiopian history particularly because, as can be seen from Youtube videos and articles on the internet, it will help in the systematic exploration and documentation of Ethiopian history by genuine historians and talented amateurs around the world. Certainly, there are a lot more people who have never heard about Ethiopian history before. This note is meant to help anyone interested to discover and explore Ethiopian history and culture for themselves. -

"Ethiopia will stretch out her hands to God." (Ps 68: 31). Introduction In this article I will share the ecumenical expenences and reflections of a group of Spiritans who have been struggling to live out their missionary calling in Ethiopia, a country which has had a Christian presence since the time of St. Athanasius of Alexandria. The Ethiopian Orthodox Church has taken root in African soil, developed its own character and traditions and flourished over a period of 1,600 years! It is astonishing that so few missionaries have heard about this ancient Ethiopian church, and that they show so little interest in getting to know it when they live alongside it in Ethiopia. Pope John Paul II in Orientale Lumen 7b emphasized that the experience of the individual Churches of the east are offered to 2 us as an authoritative example of successful inculturation. I wi 11 illustrate the issues involved through some personal and group experiences and will give their historical background. I Brendan Cogavin completed M.A. Missiology at the Institut Catholique de Paris and has been working in Ethiopia since 1995. He has taught in the major seminary in Addis Ababa and in the programmes of the Conference of Major Religious Superiors. He participated in a number of symposia organized by the Ethiopian Review of Cultures and published in that review. Currently he is working on the English translation of the new Ethiopian-rite missal, the Rite of Holy Week and a Daily Prayer of the Ethiopian tradition; and is also preparing an outline of a catechetical programme which is based on the Ethiopian tradition for the eparchy of Adigrat.
