The Holy See PASTORAL JOURNEY TO BENIN, UGANDA AND KHARTOUM (SUDAN) OPENING SESSION OF THE COUNCIL OF THE GENERAL SECRETARIAT OF THE SYNOD OF BISHOPS FOR THE SPECIAL ASSEMBLY FOR AFRICA ADDRESS OF HIS HOLINESS JOHN PAUL II Cathedral of Rubaga Archdiocese of Kampala (Uganda) Tuesday, 9 February 1993 Dear Brother Bishops, Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, 1. It is with "joi inspired by the Holy Spirit" that we gather in this Cathedral of the Archdiocese of Kampala for the opening session of the Council of the General Secretariat of the Synod of Bishops for the Special Assembly for Africa. This is the seventh meeting of the Council and the third to take place on this Continent. I offer cordial greetings to all its members and to the other Bishops who have joined us. This occasion has profound significance not only for the local Churches in Africa but also for the People of God throughout the world. Through my presence here I wish to support both what has already been accomplished and what will be achieved in the days ahead. Praying Vespers together we give visible expression to the bonds of communion which unite the See of Peter and the particular Churches on this Continent, and the reality of that collegialitas effectiva et affectiva gives intensity to our prayer for the African Bishops as they prepare with their flocks for the Special Synodal Assembly. With deep affection in our Lord Jesus Christ, I wish to greet the representatives of the priests, men 2 and women Religious, and seminarians of the Dioceses of Uganda who are with us this evening.

Together with the lay martyrs from Uganda, we look forward towards the forthcoming Assembly of the African Synod of Bishops. In his message for the occasion, the Holy Father reminded us of the three key words - contemplation, communion and mission - which John Paul II entrusted to CA at Loreto in 2004. He also referred to the “programme” which Paul VI presented to CA laypeople, precisely in Namugongo in 1969 and which is still relevant today.

Box 454, Arua No. 127 CELEBRATING OUR HERITAGE A pastoral letter by the Catholic Bishops of Uganda on the occasion of the golden jubilee of Uganda’s Independence. (Abridged edition) Dear Brothers and Sisters, 1. This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice in it and be glad (Ps. 118:24). As believers in the one God Independence who is guiding the history of human- kind, of all nations and of each per- son, we greet you with this joyful ac- clamation from the liturgy of Easter, the day of the Resurrection of Jesus our Saviour. We repeat it with re- newed joy and gratitude, fifty years later, as we celebrate the Golden Ju- bilee of our beloved country, Uganda. We have so many reasons to be grate- ful to God who has walked with us throughout our long journey of histo- ry. 2. The celebration of fifty years of independence should not be simply an event but, rather, an opportunity for us to celebrate the Lord’s deliver- ance and providence (Ex.13:16). 50 Years 3. LOUISE PIROUET THE First World War has often been described by writers of mission history as a serious setback to the growth of the church in Africa. The following comment by C. P. Groves on what happened in German East Africa is typical: It was indeed a major injuryto the Christiancause that after but a single gener- ation's work in their own four colonies, missionariesfrom the land of Luther- for it was mainly Protestantmissions that were concerned-should be abruptly cut off and their work orphaned.1 Missionary thinking, which Groves reflects, was based on the premise that African Christians, deprived of European leadership, would be bound to wander into wrong paths or lapse into heathenism.

For this reason I am greatly indebted to a number of people who have significantly contributed to the shaping and final realization of this dissertation. Though the list is so long that I cannot exhaust it, I will try to summarize it below in the various categories. My sincerest gratitude goes to my main advisor and dissertation supervisor Assoc. Prof. Thomas James Solomon. I thank him for supporting me academically up to the very end. I cannot forget his very critical comments and insights that have shaped my thinking and view points. His very pragmatic approach and attention to detail has made me a better scholar, writer, and thinker. In the same way, I thank Prof. Paul Berliner who contributed greatly especially in laying a foundation for my doctoral project. I thank Assoc. Prof. Sigbjørn Apeland who has not only been a friend but also a great support academically. I also appreciate all my earlier professors at the Grieg Academy including Annemette Kirkegaard and Erik Steinskog of the University of Copenhagen. I cannot forget my conducting teacher and great friend Prof. Emeritus Magnar Mangersnes. Thanks for your love, kindness, willingness and devotion in nurturing my conducting skills. In a very special way, I wish to recognize the tremendous work done by my language tutor Kjellfrid Reite.

  • The Holy See
The Holy See JOURNEY TO UGANDA ADDRESS OF PAUL VI TO THE MEMBERS OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH IN UGANDA Friday, 1 August 1969 Venerable Brothers and beloved sons, We thank you from Our heart for the magnificent welcome you have prepared for Us. We also congratulate you on the impressive vitality of Catholic life in Uganda, In only ninety years, vocations to the Priesthood and the Religious life have multiplied, and Catholicism has flourished to the extent that today nearly three million Ugandans, about a third of the total population of the country, are faithful sons of the Church. This Nation also gave the Church her first African Bishop of the modern era, Bishop Joseph Kiwanuka, named Vicar Apostolic of Mosaka on May the twenty-fifth, nineteen hundred .and thirty-nine. When we contemplate so abundant a harvest, it is fitting to recall the sowers of the seed, the first Missionaries: and also those young Martyrs, glory of the Church in Uganda-Charles Lwanga and his companions, whom We recently raised to the honour of the altars in the universal Church. It is in their memory, and to consecrate their shrine, that the humble Vicar of Christ has come to Uganda, for they constitute a glory for the whole of Africa. How admirable was the work of the pioneers of evangelization in this Country! The White Fathers, and, after them, the Mill Hill Fathers and the Sons of the Sacred Heart from Verona; the White Sisters; and all the other Men and Women Religious, whose only motive was to spread the Word of God.
