Sur ce sujet, au moins pour l'italien, il n'existe pas encore d'étude rigoureuse et complète : bien que les publications sur les surnoms abondent, il ne s'agit, à part quelques exceptions1, que de collections onomastiques liées à une région particulière, rassemblées sans perspective scientifique, et ne pouvant servir que de source au chercheur. Aucun essai n’a été écrit sur la question générale de l'onomastique non-officielle. Dans un article très important pour le thème ici abordé, Meacci (1995) a introduit en italien la catégorie de l'allònimo2 : selon cet auteur, le soprannome (c'est-à-dire le surnom) est donné à un individu par d’autres, alors que l'allònimo est choisi par l’individu lui-même. Cependant, Meacci ne clarifie ni la relation entre l’allonimo et le pseudonyme (pseudonimo en italien), ni la manière dont il faudrait classifier un surnom donné par des amis ou familiers et utilisé ensuite par l’individu lui-même – donc comme allonimo – dans des contextes officiels. C'est le cas, pour rester dans le domaine du football, des joueurs brésiliens qui, normalement, ne sont connus que par leur surnom (ou plutôt leur allonimo : Pelè, Zico, Careca, Ronaldo, Ronaldinho, Wagner Love, etc.
