However, the trends of HDL and non-HDL cholesterol levels over time have not been previously reported in a global analysis. Here we pooled 1,127 population-based studies that measured blood lipids in 102.6 million individuals aged 18 years and older to estimate trends from 1980 to 2018 in mean total, non-HDL and HDL cholesterol levels for 200 countries. Globally, there was little change in total or non-HDL cholesterol from 1980 to 2018. This was a net effect of increases in low- and middle-income countries, especially in east and southeast Asia, and decreases in high-income western countries, especially those in northwestern Europe, and in central and eastern Europe. As a result, countries with the highest level of non-HDL cholesterol—which is a marker of cardiovascular risk— changed from those in western Europe such as Belgium, Finland, Greenland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland and Malta in 1980 to those in Asia and the Pacific, such as Tokelau, Malaysia, The Philippines and Thailand.

November 2007 Abstract Evergreen broad-leaved species are at their northern boundary of distribution in Cen- tral Europe. On the global scale, low winter temperatures play an important role limiting the distribution of evergreen broad-leaved vegetation towards the poles. In recent years, a global warming trend has been observed; the increase in annual mean temperature in Europe is mainly due to rising winter temperatures. In this study it is documented that the ranges of indigenous as well as introduced evergreen broad-leaved species are expanding northward in Central and Northern Europe. Furthermore, limiting parameters of single species are identi- fied and the recent range shifts of some of the cold-hardiest evergreen broad-leaved species, such as Ilex aquifolium, Prunus laurocerasus and Trachycarpus fortunei, are analysed, based on historical and updated field data, measured climate data and output from bioclimatic mod- els. Within the group of evergreen broad-leaved species addressed in this study, different biological mechanisms are demonstrated to play a role in limiting the single species’ distribu- tion at their northern range margins. However, the northern ranges of the investigated species are all limited by low winter temperatures in general, though at different threshold values and due to specific biological traits.

    The making of the Padanian Nation: Corruption, Hegemony, Globalization and Legitimacy Sinan Celiksu Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy under the Executive Committee of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2014 ©2014 Sinan Celiksu All rights reserved ABSTRACT The making of the Padanian Nation: Corruption, Hegemony, Globalization and Legitimacy Sinan Celiksu This dissertation examines the relationship between state failures and state legitimacy in Italy. The study is based on a one-year ethnographic field research in Varese City. The political party Northern League and its followers (Leghisti) has been chosen to observe the state-society relationships. It has been discovered that among others, three factors were instrumental in the process by which the state-society relationships has been deteriorated so as to open the path for an alternative legitimacy claim such as Padanian nationalism. Initially, revelations of political corruption and illegal state practices, failure of the state to address problems related to globalization such as global economic integration and uncontrolled immigration were instrumental. Later, struggle of hegemony and subjugation between the League and the state has been another important cause for deteriorated relationships. This study also provides qualitative data on the processes by which those deteriorated relationships and state failures contributed the rise of xenophobia and suggests that this failures of the state coupled with the problems brought about by the uncontrolled immigration and global economic expansion is likely to open a path for criminalization of both immigrants and local people.     Pittura ideista: The Spiritual in Divisionist Painting1 Vivien Greene The Divisionists were a loosely associated group of late-nineteenth-century painters intent on creating a distinctly Italian avant-garde art. Their mission was underpinned by modernist and nationalist aspirations,2 while their painting method drew on scientific theories of optics and chromatics and relied on the application of brushstrokes of individual, often complementary, colors to craft shimmering surfaces that capitalized on light effects.3 Although the movements’ members generally aligned I am grateful to those who read this essay: firstly, at its inception, Giovanna Ginex, more recently, Jon Snyder, and, lastly, my anonymous readers. We are delighted with the programme and look forward to two days of stimulating debate and discussion here, at Keble College, Oxford. Our relationship with justice is complex. Justice and the systems for delivering (criminal) justice are often criticised but rarely is there a credible, achievable challenge to the status quo proposed: most want to tinker around the edges. We are witnessing a global climate of mistrust and challenge to the establishment, political elites as well as justice leadership. The time is right to consider the way we do justice and what we want the justice system to achieve. The aim of the conference is to bring together academics, policy makers and practitioners from a variety of disciplines to shine a light on seemingly intransigent aspects of justice systems, including what equality and legitimacy mean 50 years after the assassination of Martin Luther King and why prison is still so central to justice responses to crime.
