Foreword This book about physical activity has been written especially for high school students. The first edition, published over a decade ago, met with instant success because it presented basic informationabout a subject that was highly important to high school boys and girls, in a way that was designed to make good reading for them. When itappeared, Physical Education for High School Students was a "first," a pioneering effort in giving background information, rules, strategy, officiating tech- niques, and safety requirements in what for too long was considered merely an "exercise" course. Today, when it is generally accepted that physical activity both involves and develops intellectual ability and that fitness and mental capacity cannot l'e separated in the individual, this textbook is still the outstanding effort to provide in one volume the necessary reading material to accompany a sound program ofphysical education. The first edition and now this completely revised and up-to-date second edition resulted from the efforts of a national professional organi- zation. Both editions were envisioned and carried to completion through the cooperative endeavors of almost 200 leaders in education. Authors and committee members made their contributions without compensa- tion, as a professional service, thus making it possible to produce this book at a nominal cost to the student. It is the hope of all members of the American Association for Health, Physical Education, and Recrea- tion that the book will help bring high school students closer to a knowl- edge of the joys of participation in physical activityduring their school days and as productive adult members of our society. Does it mean learning sport skills, developing good health habits, providing situations for self-expres- sion and exploration? In essence, it means all of this and more. Physical education offers valuable experiences for you as an individual and for society as a whole. It opens a whole new world of the future where recreation will increase 300 percent by the year 2000. Physical education is basically an activity-oriented program. From the time you were born, physical activity has been a most important part of your development. At your present point in development,however, you hose been exposed to many formal and informal typesof physical activity in school. Let's review some of them. During your elementary years, most of your physical education program was comprised of basic skills, movement exploration,and self- testing activities, along with some team-oriented sports. This was a good beginning, and hopefully continued through your junior high school years. The development of basic movement and sport skillsis intricate and exacting, and it takes much practice to attain proficiency. The skills which you pursue now in your physical education class should not be completely new to you. You already have learned the basic movements which have prepared you for today's physical education programs, designed to present skills and gamesituations to help meet your individual physical needs and interests. The sportsskills which you learn now will be a great asset to you during future leisuretime. Just how well you learn to use these skills
