E-mail: Abstract: Quantification of butterfly diversity and species richness is of prime importance for evaluating the status of protected areas. Permanent line transect counts were used to record species richness and abundance of butterfly communities of different habitat types in Trishna wildlife sanctuary. A total of 1005 individuals representing 59 species in 48 genera belonging to five families were recorded in the present study. Of these, 23 species belonged to the family Nymphalidae and accounted for 38.98% of the total species and 45.20% of the total number of individuals. Mature secondary mixed moist deciduous forest showed the maximum diversity and species richness, while exotic grassland showed minimum diversity and species richness. Out of 59 species, 31 are new records for Tripura state, while 21 are unique species and nine are listed in the threatened category. This study revealed that mature secondary forests are more important for butterfly communities, while exotic grasslands have a negative impact on species composition. A list of LFPs for 207 butterfly species (Super family Papilionoidea) of Sri Lanka is presented based on local studies and includes 785 plant-butterfly combinations and 480 plant species. Many of these combinations are reported for the first time in Sri Lanka. The impact of introducing new plants on the dynamics of abundance and distribution of butterflies, the possibility of butterflies being pests on crops, and observations of LFPs of rare butterfly species, are discussed. In the present investigation 51 species of butterflies belonging to 8 Families, among these 47 species of butterflies recorded from scrub jungle habitat and 21 species of butterflies recorded from open land habitat. The Simpson’s index, Evenness and Relative abundance also observed. In the present study, the member of the Family Nymphalidae was most dominant and Family Acraeidae was less dominant. The maximum numbers of butterfly species observed in scrub jungle habitat due to the majority of food plants are present. Webb1* Abstract. Habitat loss and urbanisation in the tropics have been recognised as major drivers of species extinctions. Concurrently, novel habitats such as urban parks have been shown to be important as habitats and stepping stones in urban ecosystems around the world. However, few studies have assessed long-term patterns of species extinctions and discoveries in response to these drivers in the tropics. We know little about long-term persistence and utility of novel habitats in tropical urban ecosystems. In this study, we produced an updated and exhaustive butterfy checklist of species recorded from Singapore till December 2017 to investigate trends in butterfy extirpations (local extinctions), discoveries (new country records) and rediscoveries and how these relate to land use change in 28 years (1990–2017) in Singapore. Up to 144 butterfy species were identifed to be extirpated in Singapore by 1990. From 1990–2017, an additional nine butterfy extirpations have potentially occurred, which suggests a maximum of 153 butterfy extirpations to date. The rate of extirpations between 1990 to 2017 (< 0.33 extirpations per year) was much lower than the rate of extirpations between 1926 to 1989 (> 1.52 extirpations per year). The majority of potentially extirpated butterfies between 1990 to 2017 were species restricted to mature forests. -

Ecologically Delhi is nestled between two different types of topology, one is rugged Aravalli hill range and its typical scrub forest, another is the Yamuna River and its fertile alluvial flood plains. This type of topology makes many micro habitat zones in between these two large ecological landscapes. Delhi being a gardened island of greenery in a very extensive semi desert region on one part of Delhi to the semi-flowing River Yamuna on the other side permits an easy and discrete study of sub localities. The present compilation of butterfly fauna is a long term study since 2012 onwards, through various months’ long systematic surveys and review of the existing literature on butterfly of Delhi region. Sri Lanka The Enchanted Isle A Greentours Trip Report 18th February to 8th March 2013 Led by Paul Cardy Trip Report and Systematic Lists written by Paul Cardy Day 0/1 Monday February 18th, Tuesday February 19th Journey to Sri Lanka, and to Kandy Both flights arrived on schedule, and Mr Silva was at the airport early in the morning to meet first the group arriving from London, and shortly afterwards me coming from Italy via Abu Dhabi. Once aboard the spacious bus we drove through reasonably quiet streets in the dark although there was already quite a bit of traffic on the road. Once light, very common birds began with House and Jungle Crows; a selection of egrets; Red-vented Bulbul; White-throated Kingfisher; and Rose-ringed Parakeets. We also drove past a very large Flying Fox roost. After about two and a half hours we reached a bustling Kandy, and our hotel, The Suisse. Around the lake were Indian Cormorants, Spot-billed Pelican, Little and Great Egrets, and Black-crowned Night Herons. The staff at the hotel gave a warm welcome and it was impressive that they let us check in so early in the day, although there was a slight wait for some of the rooms. While we waited an excellent buffet breakfast was enjoyed. A Common Evening Brown perched on the walls of the hotel. Then it was time for sleep, and most of us managed a few hours, with lunch optional, and delicious for those who attended. We met up at 3.30 for an afternoon excursion. -

Camping for 4-5 day duration will be regularly carried out at Poovar and Varattukulam. At least 3 to 4 camps will be arranged in these areas each month to ensure proper protection. In other camps at Kolukkan, Eravikulam, Anamudy, Meenthotty and Pettymudy, camps of 3-4 day duration will be carried out. 2-3 camps will be arranged in these areas during a month. Camping and perambulation is to be done every month in Parappayar, Parakkudy and Nooradykudy to ensure protection and keep the boundaries free from illicit activities. This will also help in eco development initiatives and prevent the external interference in tribal settlements, especially in the light of latest challenges in the form of terrorism and nexalitism. The ganja combing operation will be carried out during these perambulations. Additional perambulations will be done in the areas adjoining the Park in the northern, eastern and western boundaries, where there are chances of ganja cultivation. The boundaries with the tea estates at Chattamunnar, Vaguvarai, Kadalar, Rajamala and Pettymudy will be regularly combed for nooses and illicit distillation of liquor. The camps at Poovar, Varattukulam, Kolukkan and Eravikulam will be managed by the staff at Chattamunnar and the camps at Anamudy, Meenthotty and Pettymudy will be managed by staff at Rajamala. The Forester at Chattamunnar will organise the perambulation at Poovar, Varattukulam, Kolukkan and Eravikulam. The Forester at Rajamala will organise camps at Anamudy, Meenthotty, Pettymudy and at Parappayar, Parakkudy and Nooradykudy. The Deputy Rangers will oversee the implementation of protection plan in Eravikulam National Park in areas under their jurisdiction. -

Larvae hatch after 4 —5 d. Caterpillars feed on young foliage. There are4 larval instars, larval development lasts 22 d. The green caterpillars are very flat and hairy. L3 and L4 larvae have a yellow middorsal band. Caterpillars lack a dorsal nectary organ and tentacle organs and are not attended by ants. The girdled pupae are likewise hairy and are not attractive to ants. The butterfly emerges after a pupal period of 8 d. Both larvae and pupae are able to produce substrate-borne vibrations when disturbed. The observations on C. roxus are discussed with respect to phylogenetic and ecological implica tions. Die Eiablage erfolgt einzeln in der Mittagszeit an jungen Blät tern und Ranken einer Liane (Familie Rhamnaceae, eine genauere Bestim mung war mangels Blüten bislang unmöglich). Aus den gelben Eiern (Durchmesser 0,5 mm) schlüpfen nach4 —5 Tagen die Jungraupen. -
