    eTropic: electronic journal of studies in the tropics Singapore ‘A Land Imagined’: Rising Seas, Land Reclamation and the Tropical Film-Noir City Anita Lundberg http://orcid.org/0000-0002-0271-4715 James Cook University, Australia Jasmin Thamima Peer James Cook University, Australia Abstract Sea level rise due to climate change is predicted to be higher in the Tropics. As a low-lying, highly urbanised island near the equator, Singapore is taking an active response to this problem, including through large land reclamation projects. Incorporating both environmental and aesthetic elements, these projects also serve to bolster Singapore’s reputation as a shining example of a global city, a leading arts centre in Southeast Asia, and an economic hub to the world. This paper draws attention to urban development through an ethnographic reading of Yeo Siew Hua’s film A Land Imagined. A Singaporean tropical-noir mystery thriller, the film follows the rhizomatic path of a police investigator and his partner as they attempt to solve the disappearance of two foreign labourers. Interwoven within the film is a critique of Singapore’s treatment of migrant workers as it constructs the imaginary of the ‘Singapore Dream’. Rethinking Contact in World Englishes What warrants this call for a rethinking of contact issues in Englishes in multilingual ecologies? Th e English language has, aft er all, been explicitly recognized as being contact-derived 1 —already from its very beginnings, that is, from the emergence of Old English from the contact of the Germanic dialects; and in the shaping of the language varieties on the British Isles, as a result of contact between Germanic, Celtic, and Romance languages, to give the present-day standardized and non-standardized English dialects (Filppula 2008; Davis 2010; Venneman 2011). Such contact has been foregrounded recently in collections such as that of Schreier and Hundt (2013), and in Onysko (2016), who argues that language contact be considered an underlying mechanism for all Englishes. Even more so then, the statement that world Englishes, as the collection of English varieties around the world, and World Englishes, as the fi eld of research, collectively owe their existence to language contact hardly needs mention nowadays.

    Up Close in the Flat World: Learning about the Global at a Local Starbucks in Singapore Bryant Simon In this ethnographic essay, I look at drinking Starbucks coffee in Singapore, especially by young Malays. What does it mean for these teens from the most economically and socially marginal community in this multicultural country to publicly consume oversized American products? What are they saying about themselves and their relationship to their tradition-bound community? What can we learn about globalization and how it works by charting the consumption of this American product by a somewhat outsider community in this transnational place? I examine one group of buyers to explore the localized meaning of the global. Like many people, in 2005 I was new to the study of globalization. To understand the process better, I picked up a copy of Thomas Friedman‘s birthday cake–sized book The World Is Flat. I read it before going to Singapore for a ―starbucking‖ tour of the Asian nation located just 85 miles north of the equator. As I went from Starbucks to Starbucks in Singapore, I could not get Friedman‘s central argument out of my head. To Friedman, this somewhat awkward metaphor suggests the emergence, after the fall of the Berlin Wall, of a potentially liberating global market of labor and ideas more powerful and more equitable than nation-states and local traditions and customs. Linked together by Netscape, Microsoft Office, and fiber- optic cables, Indian technicians solve the computer problems of Texas college students; Chinese graduates of Purdue University‘s engineering school start dot.com companies in France; cartoonists in the United States do imaging for South African firms; and a Seattle-based company sells Bryant Simon <[email protected]> is professor of history and director of American Studies at Temple University.

    SYLLABUS SINGAPORE CINEMA Instructor: Alison Groppe Language of Instruction: English UO Credits: 4 Contact Hours*: 40 Total Hours of Student Engagement (THSE) in all course activities*: 120 SINGAPORE, THE REPUBLIC OF SINGAPORE COURSE DESCRIPTION This course introduces students to recent Singapore cinema by spotlighting the films and filmmakers that have attracted the most international attention to this vibrant but still- emergent “small nation” cinema. In this course, films are viewed as both artistic and cultural expressions; we will analyze each film both in terms of its aesthetics and use of film form, as well as how it reflects critically upon Singapore as a multiethnic, multilingual and post- immigrant society. We will also discuss the depiction of gender, identity and family in the films, and Singapore’s relations to Hong Kong and Hollywood cinemas (among others).
