This group of movies includes independent feature-length films, documentaries, short and experimental films and videos. They closely engage with the unique conditions of Malaysia’s economic development, ethnic relationships, and cultural practices, which together comprise significant understandings of the nationhood of Malaysia. PROGRAM ABSTRACTS FOR THE 15TH TRIENNIAL SYMPOSIUM ON AFRICAN ART Africa and Its Diasporas in the Market Place: Cultural Resources and the Global Economy The core theme of the 2011 ACASA symposium, proposed by Pamela Allara, examines the current status of Africa’s cultural resources and the influence—for good or ill—of market forces both inside and outside the continent. As nation states decline in influence and power, and corporations, private patrons and foundations increasingly determine the kinds of cultural production that will be supported, how is African art being reinterpreted and by whom? Are artists and scholars able to successfully articulate their own intellectual and cultural values in this climate? Is there anything we can do to address the situation? These overlaps have at times excluded contemporary African art from exhibitions and collections and, at other times, transformed its research and display into a contested terrain. At a moment when many museums with so‐called ethnographic collections are expanding their chronological reach by teasing out connections between traditional and contemporary artistic production, many museums of Euro‐American contemporary art are extending their geographic reach by globalizing their curatorial vision. -

Resources A Guide for Secondary School Educators The Educator’s Guide Created in conjunction with the exhibition, SINGAPO人: Discovering Chinese Singaporean Culture Discovering Chinese Singaporean Culture This exhibition examines how the Chinese community in Singapore developed its own distinctive culture. Here, visitors discover and rediscover what it means to be a Chinese Singaporean. The aim is to develop a stronger sense of the Chinese Singaporean identity amongst youths. This will help foster a greater sense of belonging while giving them an understanding of how we are similar to or different from other Chinese communities. This exhibition presents Chinese Singaporean culture through daily life in Singapore – through the things we see, hear, do and eat every day. Therefore, the experience is highly interactive where visitors can touch various stations, play games, listen to stories and have a dialogue with the gallery. Through this exhibition, we will explore ideas of: Chinese heritage Cultural interactions Public policies The exhibition content extends classroom learning and teaching, by complementing History, Social Studies and Character & Citizenship Education subjects taught in secondary schools. It is also self-guided, where students can learn and explore independently. One of the main interactive features of the exhibition is the use of wristband tags. Students can tap their wristband tags to answer questions scattered throughout the space, trigger videos and play games. At the end of the visit, students can print out their own personalised report card which summarises their exhibition journey along with prompts for further cultural exploration beyond the exhibition. This report card serves as a starting point for them to reflect about their identity in relation to everyday life. -

eTropic: electronic journal of studies in the tropics Singapore ‘A Land Imagined’: Rising Seas, Land Reclamation and the Tropical Film-Noir City Anita Lundberg http://orcid.org/0000-0002-0271-4715 James Cook University, Australia Jasmin Thamima Peer James Cook University, Australia Abstract Sea level rise due to climate change is predicted to be higher in the Tropics. As a low-lying, highly urbanised island near the equator, Singapore is taking an active response to this problem, including through large land reclamation projects. Incorporating both environmental and aesthetic elements, these projects also serve to bolster Singapore’s reputation as a shining example of a global city, a leading arts centre in Southeast Asia, and an economic hub to the world. This paper draws attention to urban development through an ethnographic reading of Yeo Siew Hua’s film A Land Imagined. A Singaporean tropical-noir mystery thriller, the film follows the rhizomatic path of a police investigator and his partner as they attempt to solve the disappearance of two foreign labourers. Interwoven within the film is a critique of Singapore’s treatment of migrant workers as it constructs the imaginary of the ‘Singapore Dream’. KAJIAN SSOSIOLINGUISTIK DALAM Style (RAGAM BAHASA) DIALOG FILM INDONESIA (STUDI KASUS: NASKAH FILM INDONESIA TAHUN 2005 – 2008) Adiprana Yogatama, Yunita Nugraheni Fakultas Bahasa & Budaya Asing Universitas Muhammadiyah Semarang Abstrak Latar belakang : Kebangkitan dunia perfilman Indonesia telah dimulai pada tahun 2000 diawali dengan pemutaran film Petualangan Sherina di beberapa bioskop di Indonesia. Suksesnya penayangan film tersebut membangkitkan semangat sineas-sineas muda untuk memproduksi film dalam negeri. Hal ini ditunjukkan pada tahun-tahun selanjutnya dengan marak bermunculan film-film lokal dengan bermacam-macam genre. Tema yang paling sering muncul, seperti yang telah kita ketahui, adalah tema percintaan remaja dan horor. Bak jamur di musim penghujan, kedua tema tersebut tak pelak mendominasi dunia perfilman Indonesia 8 tahun terakhir. Inilah mengapa banyak para kritikus perfilman menyebut Indonesia sebagai negara jamur. Ketika satu tema film meledak di pasaran, dalam hitungan bulan muncul pula film-film ber- genre serupa. Namun, bagaimanakah kualitas film-film tersebut dibandingkan kuantitasnya? Layakkah pula film-film tersebut dikonsumsi oleh masyarakat? Pantaskah jika beberapa film tersebut menerima penghargaan? Metode : Penelitian ini akan menerapkan metode deskriptif-kualitatif. Disebut deskriptif karena merupakan metode penelitian yang mendeskripsikan sebuah situasi atau area permasalahan secara sistematis, faktual dan akurat (Isaac dan Michael, 1971:42). Penelitian ini juga disebut kualitatif dikarenakan tidak bergantung pada statistik data dan jumlah data yang ada dimunculkan untuk mendeskripsikan fenomena yang diteliti. Hasil : Dari sepuluh film diambil 4 sampel yaitu “Gie”, “Ekskul”, “Nagabonar Jadi 2”, dan “Fiksi”. Keempatnya merupakan peraih penghargaan Film Terbaik FFI di tahunnya masing-masing. Dari keempat film tersebut penulis menilai film Gie sebagai film yang terbaik yang baik dan layak ditonton oleh semua umur. -

Singapore Shorts: "Whatever happened to The Class Of 2002?" Ben Slater reviews a compilation of Singapore short films, and comments on the past and current crop of short-film makers in Singapore Rewind It was April 2002. The Singapore International Film Festival (SIFF) was raging on like a small war against mediocrity. Fresh from England, feeling self-conscious in sandals, I managed to secure a press pass, and attended jury screenings at the SIFF. After each session, everyone would pile into a people-mover vehicle to head for the obligatory nasi padang - Malay food - at the Rendez-Vous Hotel, whose manager is a film fan who supports the festival every year with this culinary kindness. Philip Cheah, the festival director, would offer me a place in the van, but I would decline. Not totally out of shyness, but I was busy, rehearsing a play in Little India, and couldn't dally with cinephiles, much as I wanted to. One morning, we were at the Alliance Francaise for the local shorts competition screening. What were my expectations? Not high, I suppose. Cheah had told me that in previous years, juries had been so underwhelmed by the quality of the films that they refused to give out all the prizes. My only previous experience of short films from Singapore had been a fairly disastrous screening of student work at the Substation (a local arts centre); the documentaries were passable tertiary fare, but any attempt at fiction clunked hard. The Alliance was a fairly large hall, with a few hundred seats. The jury sat on the back row. -
