Apichatpong Weerasethakul
UNKNOWN FORCES: APICHATPONG WEERASETHAKUL April 18 – June 17, 2007 hold of and ask what I should do. I am consulting a fortune teller now for what the next film should be. She told me the main character (light skin, wide forehead), the locations (university, sports stadium, empty temple, mountain), and the elements (the moon and the water). RI: The backdrops of much of your work accentuate feelings of aloneness and isolation from others. Films like Tropical Malady (2004) and Worldly Desires (2005) traverse remote recesses of distant, even enchanted jungles. In FAITH (2006), you leave earth entirely in search of greater solitude in outer space. You seem interested in or at least drawn to obscure or enigmatic sites that have been left relatively unexplored, untouched, unimagined… AW: That’s what I got from the movies. When you are in a dark theater, your mind drifts and travels. In my hometown when I was growing up, there was nothing. The movie theater was a sanctuary where I was mostly addicted to spectacular and disaster films. Now, as a filmmaker, I am trying to search for similar feelings of wonder, of dreams. It’s quite a personal and isolated experience. Tropical Malady is more about a journey into one’s mind rather than Apichatpong Weerasethakul a real jungle. Or sometimes it is a feeling of “watching” movies. RI: Can you speak about your use of old tales and mythologies in your work? What significance do they hold for you? AW: It’s in the air. Thailand’s atmosphere is unique. It might be hard to understand for foreigners. -

The first period, what I term the "founding" period of the road movie genre, includes six films of the 1960s and 1970s: Arthur Penn's Bonnie and Clyde (1967), Dennis Hopper's Easy Rider (1969), Francis Ford Coppola's The Rain People (1969), Monte Hellman's Two-Lane Blacktop (1971), Richard Sarafian's Vanishing Point (1971), and Joseph Strick's Road Movie (1974). Singapore 'A Land Imagined': Rising Seas, Land Reclamation and the Tropical Film-Noir City
eTropic: electronic journal of studies in the tropics Singapore ‘A Land Imagined’: Rising Seas, Land Reclamation and the Tropical Film-Noir City Anita Lundberg http://orcid.org/0000-0002-0271-4715 James Cook University, Australia Jasmin Thamima Peer James Cook University, Australia Abstract Sea level rise due to climate change is predicted to be higher in the Tropics. As a low-lying, highly urbanised island near the equator, Singapore is taking an active response to this problem, including through large land reclamation projects. Incorporating both environmental and aesthetic elements, these projects also serve to bolster Singapore’s reputation as a shining example of a global city, a leading arts centre in Southeast Asia, and an economic hub to the world. This paper draws attention to urban development through an ethnographic reading of Yeo Siew Hua’s film A Land Imagined. A Singaporean tropical-noir mystery thriller, the film follows the rhizomatic path of a police investigator and his partner as they attempt to solve the disappearance of two foreign labourers. Interwoven within the film is a critique of Singapore’s treatment of migrant workers as it constructs the imaginary of the ‘Singapore Dream’. Keywords: Singapore city, film ethnography, land reclamation, migrant labour, rising seas, climate change, tropical imaginary, rhizomatics eTropic: electronic journal of studies in the tropics publishes new research from arts, humanities, social sciences and allied fields on the variety and interrelatedness of nature, culture, and society in the tropics. Thinking he has no other option, Fuller decides to take a security guard hostage in order to get his demands met. Laura must act as intermediary and exchange herself for the hostage, trying to convince Fuller to give himself up. -

Contemporary Catalan cinema resonates significantly with the images being created by artists all over the world. The vitality of the cinema being made here is manifested in the works of upcoming filmmakers who, with their aesthetic and thematic proposals, create cinematographic dialogues with other contemporary filmmakers. These dialogues are based not on similarity, instead contrasting the creative concerns of these artists. A field/counter field, like a question/answer, in which the images can either connect or question each other, becoming possible parts of a single discourse. -
