THEODORE Page 2 is the keeper of man's conscience is beautifully illustrated by Communism… (and) the fearsome false-god which fashioned the character of Na- zism.” (“Idolatry”; A Handbook of Christian Theology, by Halverson and Choen, pg. 177). It is a matter of life and salvation that we continuously glorify Christ our God, because He is the Keeper of our conscience so that we do all things that are good and well pleasing “for the peace of the whole world” (as we pray during the Divine Liturgy). Our Lord in today’s Gospel passage reminds us that we can have nothing to be more important than His Love. If we do make someone, or something, more important than Christ, we become co-dependent upon that person or thing. Our happiness depends on their happiness (or its existence). This plays out in front of our eyes on a miserable scale. Some people place their “family” above God. This means that, while God may even be a glimmering picture in their way of thinking, family comes first—even to the ridiculous extreme of justifying crime in the name of “providing for one’s family.” Some people place events as being more important than God. This means that, when their team wins (be it a “political party”, or a sports team), celebration goes on to extremes that are both harmful and insulting; when their team looses, anger and even violence takes over. This dependency on things we can- not control gives way to stress, manifested in the constant need for even further dependency on drugs or alcohol. Dependency on our own “self” betrays us due to the reality that we are, in fact, weak and prone to deceptions ranging from false ideologies to grandiose self-images. Let us truly depend on Christ our God. Such dependence is the very definition of humility. My experience as an ordained Orthodox Chris- tian priest has proven to me time and again that every time a person turns to Jesus Christ, his or her quality of life is always for the good. Edmond La B. Cherbonier: People find peace; they find purpose; they find the Wisdom of God by which they can discern good from evil and follow a path that leads to a fulfilled, productive life. I have seen this from people who were ter- minally ill; from people held in prison; from people grieving loss. Eve- ry time they turn to Christ, they find comfort and strength in time of trial, tribulation and temptation. People have conquered, with God’s help, their addictions; their hatreds; their despair. At the same time, they have found inner peace and tear-filled joy through the victories, be they ever so small at first, though they become huge over a life- time. It’s a living experience for me by which I know that the Holy "Idolatry":A Handbook of Christian Theol- Spirit is at work daily in the lives of God’s people, if they choose to ogy, by Halverson and Choen, pg.177). accept the True God and reject the false gods. When they came to Capernaum, the collectors of the Temple tax approached Peter and said, “Doesn’t your teacher pay the Temple tax?” “Yes,” he said. The fires of evangelistic fervor must be 'rebuilt in many a locality. Where the . brethren have become indifferent and are doing little to convert their neighbors, a new spirit of revivalism, born of' love, born of' the Holy Spirit, must be begotten in them. We who have 'received such notable blessings from God can not simply sit down and let a world gO,to destruction. 0 my God, re buke the awful spirit of lukewarmness wherever it exists, rebuke and chasten thy people, 0 Lord, for lack of soul-saving love in what ever degree it exists! • God Delivers Christ from Ruin and Sets His Foot Upon a Rock for Us and for All Men.”
Lent Vespers 1 16 March 2014 Concordia Lutheran Mission Terrebonne, Oregon “God Delivers Christ from Ruin and Sets His Foot upon a Rock for Us and for All Men.” He brought Me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set My feet upon a rock, and established My goings.1 Psalm 40:2 Introduction What is this pit of horrors from which Christ is delivered? The pit of horrors is God’s everlasting wrath over the sins of men. Similarly, the miry clay is the terra infirma (unfirm earth, quicksand as it were) of God’s abandonment of Christ because of the sins of men. God, however, delivered Christ from these terrors based on Christ’s Merit for us, namely, Christ’s waiting patiently on the Lord, obeying the Lord faithfully even in the midst of these terrors. God replaced the unfirm ground of His forsaking Christ with the firm Rock of God’s good favor won by Christ’s obedience. This Rock and Sure Footing stretches out in all directions forever because God has established Christ’s Ways. Through this Work of Christ’s in our behalf, God re-stores all men. Men are no longer forsaken by God to the pit of horrors and everlasting quick sand because of their sin and are Placed on the Solid Ground and Secure Footing of Christ. This Blessed Work God accomplishes through the Rock that is the Gospel, i.e. God’s Word and Sacraments2. Through the Gospel God absolves of sin and, therefore, delivers from 1Text is from The Lutheran Hymnal, p.

At Cambridge University he discovered a daily Bible study group. This group was sneered at, but sneering wasn’t enough. Latimer went to beg them to stop reading the Scriptures, but he discovered Master Stafford, a highly respected professor, leading the group. It was conceivable that young people were studying these new doctrines, but it was disgraceful for a doctor of divinity! Latimer attacked Stafford, and insulted him; he again begged the youth to abandon the professor’s heretical teachings and during the doctor’s lectures, he made signs of impatience plus ridiculed him afterwards. He even preached in public against the learned doctor. Bilney, a Bible reformer, heard Latimer’s attacks on the reformation and on the Bible. Bilney felt love for Latimer and prayed for a way to reach the priest with the truth. Then he went to see Latimer. “For the love of God,” he said, “be pleased to hear my confession.” Latimer was thrilled that a Bible study leader had come to him for confession. He felt vindicated and accepted Bilney’s request. Bilney knelt and related to Latimer, with touching simplici- ty, the anguish he felt in his soul, the efforts he had made to remove it while following the precepts of the church; and the peace he found by believing in Jesus Christ as the Lamb of God that takes away the sins of the world.
