OUR NEXT EXCITING SHUL PROJECT!!

Thanks to the generosity of Shlomo & Shifra (Sam & Anita) Friedlander, we have a great opportunity to learn one of the most contemporary works on purity of speech. This Sefer is free to every Shul member. All you have to do is read 2 pages a day. The Sefer is in English and is very easy to learn with your spouse, children, friend, chavrusa, or even yourself! Something meaningful to learn on a Shabbos or before you go to bed. All you have to do is commit to learning 2 pages a day - it’s that simple !

TAKE CHARGE. Of your words. And your life. And see how happy and fulfilled you can become.

Speech is power. Our words have the power to heal or harm, to create connection or confrontation. By truly and deeply incorporating into our words the guidelines set by the Torah for avoiding negative, harmful speech, and replacing them with respectful, loving, and positive interactions - by following the laws of shmiras haloshon—we can change our relationships, and ourselves. This remarkable book from the Chofetz Chaim Heritage Foundation shows us how. Each of these daily readings gives us a real-life question in shmiras haloshon, with a brief explanation of the relevant halachos showing how the Torah would want us to handle the scenario. We are given specific strategies for growth, and are asked piercing questions that help us to understand ourselves and the way we relate to others. We learn how to be more aware of our words, how to strengthen our love for others, speak out when it's necessary, see the good in others, forgive past hurts - all the skills we need to become better, and happier, people. Whether you have long studied the laws of shmiras haloshon or are being introduced to them for the first time, these daily readings will change your words, and your life, as you harness the awesome power of your speech. NOW FOR SOME GOOD NEWS DURING COVID - 19!! - ANNOUNCED JUNE 4th

Desmos Global Art Contest Desmos's first Global Art Contest featured over 4,000 graphs from over 100 countries around the world. Here are the winners and finalists, chosen from countless examples of incredible effort, artistry, ingenuity, and creativity. Ages 17-18 Ezra Oppenheimer Ontario, Canada From the judges: This graph is, simply put, the most incredible work of mathematics we’ve seen in our calculator’s history. The math goes incredibly deep, from the vertex data buffers behind the rendering of the car to the use of stacked parametric ellipses to control lighting and shadows. The result: a stunning, animated, navigable 3-dimensional world rendered in exquisite detail. Despite being over 3,000 equations long, this graph runs far more smoothly than we expected, a sign of Ezra’s focus on performance and optimization. A true mathematical and artistic tour-de-force. Warning: this graph may take a while to load. From the artist: “I scouted GTA 5 for inspiration and found a background that looked very plausible! Next I developed a 3D system from scratch; this allowed me to communicate between Desmos and Blender 3D interchangeably. Finally, I learned how to manipulate math to create shadows, reflections, and occlusions, just like the real world!” Parshas Shelach June 19 - 26 , 2020 MESSAGE FROM THE RABBI FOR THOSE COMING TO THE VIRTUAL KIDDUSH: Dear Member, On behalf on the entire Shul, we wish you a beautiful Shabbos. The book is a user-friendly way to learn the laws of positive speech on a daily basis. You can learn the book three times a year by merely reading two pages a day. You can either: 1) Start from pg. 52 from the beginning, or 2) start from page 106 which corresponds to Sivan 27 (Friday), or if you are ambitious, 3) learn on Shabbos pp. 52- 109, and then begin on Sunday from page 110, and be caught up with the present cycle. What Does KEHILA Stand For ? K - One of the Pillars of Our community is KINDNESS E - Here is where you plug in to get your spiritual ENERGY H - Always HAPPY to see & help each other I - INSPIRED by each other to grow L - Illuminating each other with the LIGHT & LOVE of Torah A - Where the ATMOSPHERE of our AVODAS Hashem is AWESOME !

Ron Wolfson, Relational Judaism. pg 37-38 More than this: in Judaism, community is essential to the spiritual life. Our holiest prayers require a minyan. When we celebrate or mourn we do so as a community. Even when we confess, we do so together. Maimonides rules that “One who separates himself from the community, even if he does not commit a transgression but merely holds himself aloof from the congregation of Israel, does not fulfil the commandments together with his people, shows himself indifferent to their distress and does not observe their fast days but goes on his own way like one of the nations who does not belong to the Jewish people — such a person has no share in the world to come.” (Maimonides, Hilkhot Teshuvah 3: 11)

Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks The Jewish endeavor is about learning to live in community. Something that previous generations took for granted, today we have to work at to achieve. Community does not come easily to us raised in a culture of rugged individualism. Live and let live is the American way. But living in community is the Jewish way. You can’t be a Jewish hermit; Judaism, if lived fully, demands of us involvement with others.

Rabbi Mordecai Kaplan Religious identity is based on the “three Bs” of believing, belonging, and behaving....What gives Jews their sense of identity is not primarily belief, but rather, belonging. It is the idea of “peoplehood,” the sense of belonging to the Jewish people, the Jewish community that distinguishes Jewish identity from other religious traditions.

Rabbi Avraham Yitzchak Kook, Orot....The soul of the individuals is drawn from ... the community, the community bestowing a soul upon the individuals. One who considers severing himself from the people must sever his soul from the source of its vitality. Therefore each individual Jew is greatly in need of the community. He will always offer his life so that he should not be torn from the people, because his soul and self-perfection require that of him. (p. 144)

Rav Aharon Lichtenstein ZT"L, Brother Daniel and the Jewish Fraternity....The ger cannot embrace Judaism without simultaneously becoming a member of the Jewish people. He cannot, that is, accept the spiritual aspect of Jewry without the material....The [ger] embraces not only Jewry's present fortunes but its history as well. Parshas Shelach June 19 - 26 , 2020 PLEXIGLAS & THERMOMETER SAFETY PROTECTION IN SHUL: AROUND THE BIMA AROUND THE AMUD GABBAIM CAN BE CLOSE BY CHAZZAN & RABBI PEOPLE CAN RECEIVE ALIYOS CAN BE BETTER SEEN /HEARD

The Zomet Institure, which finds and invents halachically (Jewish law) acceptable solutions for using certain modern technical (and non-technical) devices on , has introduced a thermometer that can be used in synagogues and hospitals on Shabbat. It is equipped with a special Shabbat mechanism enabling it to operate automatically in a Shabbat friendly manner. The thermometer can be used as a handheld device, or mounted at the entrance to the building. The thermometer operates automatically, without the need to press any buttons. The Shabbat mechanism sets the infrared thermometer to automatically check the temperature of what is in front of it every 4 seconds. MESSAGE FROM THE RABBI FOR THOSE COMING TO SHUL: Dear Chevra, When you enter the Shul, you will see the following message (below) visibly posted on all doors. Please read this very carefully, and only come if you plan on complying 100 % with these safety measures. I can not stress enough how vigilant we must be in adhering to every nuance of these safety measures. I know that we are being extra careful and probably overly careful, but this is what halacha demands from us. No matter how much I love each and every one of you, I cannot make exceptions for leniencies in this area. The entire world, and more particularly, the rest of the people of our shul , are watching our every move to know how safely we are proceeding with the minyan. You should view yourselves as the Chashmonaim who were blessed to re-dedicate the Beis Hamikdash during the story of Chanuka. You will set the tone for how Shul members comport themselves in the future. To that end, I have delegated Daniel Devere to be the Covid Mashgiach regarding all health and safety issues & David Fihrer regarding all davening issues. Please comply 100 % with what they ask you to do in both of these areas. Please follow their lead and instructions. In addition, all members will receive the following business card sized “Ma Tovu” card that we urge everyone to bring with them and read while entering the Shul. This is no less of a safety measure than the physical measures below. Feel free to print this one for now.
