Japanese Penpal

Year 8 student Charis Rae has started a new long distance friendship with a penpal in Japan, corresponding in both English and Japanese.

Charis, a pupil at William Hulme’s Grammar School (WHGS), recently started writing to her new friend Yuto after encouragement from the school’s English teacher Joanne Turan, who has been penpal with Yuto’s mother for over 20 years.

Charis wrote her first letter to Yuto in both Japanese and English, even writing a song for him, with both pen pals being keen musicians. Soon after, Charis received a letter from Yuto, also written in English and Japanese, detailing his hobbies and interests.

Commented Ms Turan:

“As Literacy Co-ordinator and Teacher of English at WHGS, I am keen to develop links with schools in Japan and other countries, helping to encourage our pupils to enjoy and take pleasure in letter writing, discovering new friendships and cultures along the way.

“Having written to Yuto’s mother for over 20 years, it is fantastic to see the joy of anticipation on the faces of students when receiving letters from their pen pal and I was delighted to see that same excitement when Charis received her first letter. I wish her and Yuto many years of friendship.”

Added Peter Mulholland, Principal of William Hulme’s Grammar School:

“We’re delighted to see our students interacting with fellow pupils from overseas and this is just another excellent example of our commitment to providing our students with an education with character.” View this article on our Website… Y8 Cooking Competition

On Wednesday, 23 January, some fellow Year 9 students and I attended a Holocaust Memorial Day presentation at HOME in Manchester, becoming some of the first in the UK to see the two films being shown.

The films dealt with the Holocaust, as well as the Genocide in in 1994. A particularly emotional part of the event was when we personally heard from and met holocaust survivor Danny Herman. Mr Herman talked about his family and what he went through to be here in the uk.

In addition, we watched a few very powerful and moving short films, which brought both mine and my friend and Almira’s emotions out. We also took part in an interactive lesson from home about the Holocaust Memorial Day, which was also an emotional experience, teaching us more about the Holocaust..

When first taking part in these events, I didn’t know much about the Holocaust, but afterwards, my mind was full of new knowledge about the Holocaust and how people were being treated differently.

As a result of these experiences, I have learnt that everyone should be able to be who they want to be, without having to be scared of what might happen to them.

Thank you to Miss McGuinn (and all the people who arranged the Holocaust Memorial Day presentation) for taking us on an amazing trip and one that won’t be forgotten.

On Wednesday, 23 January 2019, Year 4 took a trip to Manchester Airport, in support of their Geography topic, ‘All Around the World.’

The group spent the morning at Terminal 2, learning about how an airport works and visiting different parts of the terminal.

In the afternoon, the junior visitors went to the Runway Visitors Park, where they had the opportunity to watch the planes take off and land close up! As part of the trip, the group also got to see the famous Concorde, as well as learning about the different types of aircraft.

For the grand finale, the children were able to actually explore a plane and sit in the pilot’s chair. Everyone enjoyed the trip and learnt a lot of useful information to help kick-start their topic.

On Friday, 8 February, students from Year 11 were invited to our Sixth Form Centre to take part in the first ever WHGS Sixth Form taster afternoon. This was a great opportunity for our Year 11s to sample life in the Sixth Form and take part in lessons, including brand new subjects to them such as Law, Politics, Psychology and Sociology.

Those taking part really got into the spirit of things and were given the opportunity to participate in a wide variety of activities, including debating ethical issues in Business Studies and dressing up as barristers in Law.

Between taster lessons, students also had the chance to relax in the different areas of the Sixth Form centre and took the opportunity to enjoy lunch in the café, as well as being served hot drinks and biscuits by Head of Sixth Form, Mr Howarth and Ms Boustead in the flexible learning space.

The Sixth Form team and teachers were very impressed with how enthusiastic our Year 11 students were, getting involved in the activities on offer and embracing the whole Sixth Form experience. The feedback from the students was extremely positive and we are looking forward to seeing our new additions to the Sixth Form here in September.

As part of their team building, a group of our hardworking prefects took part in the Challenge4Change initiative.

Challenge4Change is an education programme, focusing on developing the skills and qualities young people need to become successful, confident individuals and responsible citizens. Their activities also support the current curriculum, which focuses on personal learning and thinking skills, independent enquirers, creative thinkers, team workers, self-managers, effective participators and reflective learners.

During the venture, which took place in Stretford, Manchester, Challenge4Change staff supported our students through the various activities, helping to stretch them as far as they could.

Each of the activities saw the prefects tested on their team building, team bonding, motivation, reward, assessment and resilience, also helping them to develop their confidence and self-esteem.

A big thank you to the staff who made this happen and well done to all students who took part. You did a fantastic job of showing your team building and resilience skills!

“Really enjoyable and a stress relieving experience. It’s really allowed us to better our team building and communication skills with the other prefects.” Raheema Majid, Head of School Ilsa Mohammed (Year 12)

If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again… That’s particularly true for a group of girls at WHGS, who have made their mark on the pitch as part of ‘Project Rugby.’

A joint initiative between Premiership Rugby and England Rugby, the scheme is designed to increase participation in the game by young people from traditionally underrepresented groups, engaging with thousands of participants every year.

Supported locally by Sale Sharks and Broughton Park, one of the oldest rugby union clubs in England, at WHGS the scheme saw students from Years 7 to 10 engaging in a sport they had never tried before, with training and continuing professional development opportunities provided for staff.

Across the year, the school then fielded both Under 12s and Under 14s teams, with those students who excelled being offered the opportunity by Broughton Park to play at the weekends. As a direct result, WHGS now has 12 students playing at weekends, linking in with the National Lottery funded ‘This Girl can’ campaign.

Commenting on the scheme, Peter Mulholland, Principal of William Hulme’s Grammar School, said:

The choir consists of pupils from Years 4 and 5, and we had been working hard to learn the songs and dance moves since the autumn term. The programme consisted of a wide variety of well known and newer songs, and featured medleys of Pop Music, Jazz and Swing, American Folk Song, songs from the stage and screen, and original compositions. We were also fortunate enough to perform with many star vocalists, including Tony Hadley from Spandau Ballet and Charlene Hunter who fronts Basement Jaxx. The event featured Urban Strides - a street dance troupe who helped us learn dance routines to accompany many of our numbers, including The Moana Mashup, Viva La Vida and Feed the World. The final medley from The Greatest Showman was one of our favourite parts!

All in all, this experience was one of the most exciting musical events we have ever participated in - we were lucky enough to have been singing at the MEN Arena as part of a choir of thousands, illuminated by torches! Pure musical magic!

In February, forty three students (ranging from Year 7 to Year 13) and 6 members of staff went on the trip of a lifetime – skiing in Gitschberg, which is in the South Tyrol area of Italy (which includes part of the Dolomites region), less than 30 minutes from the Austrian border.

We stayed in a beautiful town called Natz, in the Hotel Hairerhof, a family-run hotel which was fantastic for the students we took – cosy, friendly and welcoming.

The skiing involved complete novices, who had never been on snow before; an intermediate group with some experience; and an advanced group, who burnt the slopes up all week. Each group had two staff attached to them and a professional ski instructor from the Gitschberg Italian Ski School.

The weather all week was absolutely fantastic – with not a cloud in the sky, the views were spectacular – and the skiing utterly brilliant.

Après ski was also entertaining, with all pupils being an absolute credit to the school.

Students documented themes surrounding landscape, texture, pattern, negative space and the elements, as research for their GCSE exam.

Dunham Massey was beautiful and offered lots of opportunity for students to take striking pictures. We even spotted some deer! In their upcoming lessons, our students will be analysing their photographs - making links between their own personal style and the contemporary photographers they have been researching, as well as refining their photographs with digital techniques.

On Tuesday, 5 March, we went to the University of Manchester to participate in Maths Fest 2019. When we arrived at the Great Hall of the Sackville Street Building, which is situated in the North campus, we realised that a lot of schools were taking part in the event.

As a starter, to warm up our brains, we did a word search. The main challenge then consisted of 4 rounds; each one had different maths questions and teamwork was involved as well. In the first round we had to work independently and pass a sheet around for others to solve what we could not do in the first time.

We won first place in the 3rd round and received a certificate as well.

We enjoyed this experience as it was challenging and fun. We also got to have a look at the building and consider it as an option when applying for university. View this article on our Website… Y4-Y7 ‘Foxcraft’ Author Visit

The Manchester Voices is a newly formed ‘super choir’ comprising members from each of the following UL schools in the Manchester Cluster: WHGS, Manchester Academy, and Irlam and Cadishead Academy. This week, we had our inaugural performance at the UL Head Teachers Conference held at the Principal Hotel in Manchester.

The Executive Head of the Manchester Cluster, Frank McCarron, wanted to bring together students from these very different schools to enhance the educational experience of the pupils and encourage further integration.

The pupils met for the very first time at Irlam and Cadishead Academy on Monday and then had only 8 hours to create a performance worthy of such a prestigious audience! Luckily, we had some help from choir master Daniel McDwyer, of recent One Love fame. Dan was able to work with our pupils and create a programme of unrivalled beauty and a staggeringly high standard – on the night, the choir sounded like they had been performing together forever.

All performances were Dan’s own arrangements – and were in 3 part harmony and cleverly arranged in such a way as to suit the singers voices. We opened with our own version of Emili Sande’s Wonder, followed this with an arrangement of This Is Me from the Greatest Showman, and finished with the wonderful Why We Sing by Kirk Franklin.

The programme was received with a standing ovation by the attending Head Teachers, who were astounded by the exceptional results. I feel there will be more from the Manchester Voices – watch this space! View this article on our Website… Y8 Boys and Girls Handball Competition

We were lucky enough to have a special visitor in our school during Science Week! Science Boffin paid us a visit on Thursday, 14 March, and all of the Primary Phase pupils had an EXPLOSIVE day!

We learnt about polymers in a balloon and how they can help us poke a stick all the way through a balloon without popping it; we learnt about water-phobic powder and watched in amazement when it was set on fire; and we learnt about how to make enough toothpaste for an elephant using an incredible chemical reaction!
