Sources of heavy metal contamination are widespread, especially in urban environments. Certain plants such as sunfower (Helianthus annuus) have been shown to sequester heavy metals in their root systems, thus fltering contaminants such as lead (Pb) from soil, a CORRESPONDING process termed rhizofltration.
